Mosley receives gift draw with Mora

By Chris Williams: Shane Mosley dodged an almost certain loss tonight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, when the judges gave him a 12 round draw against former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora. However, Mosley looked totally shot throughout the 12 round bout and appeared, at least to me, to have lost the fight 9 rounds to 3. The judges’ scored it 116-112 for Mosley, 115-113 for Mora, and 114-114.
owever, Mosley, the more popular fighter, was able to be spared a defeat by the judges. But the draw pretty much ruins Mosley’s chances of getting a fight with Manny Pacquiao in the future. I say “probably” because a poor performance or a loss doesn’t seem to disqualify fighters for fights against Pacquiao. We could still see Mosley in against Pacquiao in what would likely be a terrible looking fight. Heck, Mosley may get selected for Pacquiao just because he looked so terrible.

It’s also worth noting that Mora did in fact lose the extra weight (from my understanding) and ended up re-weighing at 153.6 lbs. So, it’s possible that he was drained a bit also.

I think Mosley took the 12th round, though it was fairly close (relative to some of the other rounds), but I had Mora winning the 10th and 11th rounds.
Mosley was clearly tired from early on in the fight (probably starting around round 3-4, I made that comment to the people in attendance at the fight party I went to – in fact, I didn’t think Mosley looked good beginning with round 1; he was lunging with shots and seemed a bit slow).
I think we basically saw the same fight, but your “nothing” rounds could have gone either way because Shane was trying too hard (pretty unsuccessfully) and Sergio wasn’t trying hard enough.
I know you had it 8-4 for Shane, but were you OK with the draw (it’s better than giving the fight to Mora, which would have happened if Mosley didn’t win the fight on ALL judges scorecards in the last two rounds)?
BTW, I think Mora’s strategy of clenching was very similar to the strategy Shane used against Margacheato (but ofcourse, we know how that fight ended).

Mora gave 20% of his purse to Mosley as a result, and perhaps he gained enough of a size advantage to wear Shane down faster.
Either way, I saw Mosley lose his mustard at almost the exact same point in this fight as in the Floyd fight… round 3. He got a second wind near the end of the fight, but it was too little too late, you know?

I think you and I saw different fights. The end rounds belonged to Mosley for sure. The first round I gave to Mora, and three of the middle rounds.
Mora is good not great. If Mosley were better conditioned, he would have done what I said, stalked Mora, gotten inside, and went to work. He tried, but he seemed to sapped to push off from Mora’s constant clenching.

What about the way Sergio fought the last few rounds? The fight certainly would have been more competitive if he fought like that for a majority of the fight, but could he have won on your card (I assume a majority of the rounds – at least half – that you gave to Mora were in the last 4th of the fight when he really started stepping it up)?
When Sergio does fight, he’s pretty good (though not great and not a risk taker).

Yes, Mora will never be elite and Shane beats him in his prime (actually, Shane probably beats him at 147 in current form). The primary reason that I was going with Mora on this one was because it was at 154 (coupled with Mora’s natural size advantage and fight/ non-fight style; and because Shane had struggled in previous 154 lb fights).
All along my contention was that the size & style was wrong for Shane at this point in his career (never that Mora was a better fighter than Shane by any stretch of the imagination).
I’m betting that I still can’t get you to come over to my side on the outcome of the potential Mayweather-Pacman fight, can I? LOL!!

We basically saw it the same way. I’m OK with the draw because neither fighter really deserved it, but it COULD have gone either way (a case of the lesser of two evils – kind of like Juan Manuel Marquez vs Freddie Norwood back in the day).
Undercards were very good – I like what I’ve seen of Alvarez (I never expected a stoppage of Baldomir – but I don’t know Alvarez too well), and Ortiz is really rebuilding his image since he waived the proverbial “white flag” against Maidana – IMO.

A draw was appropriate…Shane struggled, trying to deal with Mora’s movement. But, Mora did not do much either. In fact, the punch stats revealed just that. It was an ugly fight..tough to score. The undercards were excellent though. Almost every fight on the u/c ended in a stoppage. Attendance was great for the 3 televised fights. It was a great time out for the wife and I.

I concede your assessment was closer than mine. Mosley, however, was gassed after a couple rounds, which is 110% consistent with what happened against Floyd.
His heart wants to go, his body says no.
Guarantee you Mora gets knocked out of the ring against a prime Mosley. This fight showed more about Shane being past his prime than it did about Mora being game.
Mora blows, you and I know that. He’s not an elite fighter, and never will be.
As far as the fight goes. Mosley took it 8 rounds to 4 in my opinion. Mora may have been ring general, but his aggressiveness was NOT effective.
Punch stats can be used for scoring the defensive element and the clean punching, and whoever was hit more in the fight had the worse defense, whoever connected more has the cleaner punching (usually).
In that respect, Mosley wins to me, on three of the four criteria. A lackluster performance by both, and the rounds I gave to Shane were basically “nothing” rounds, meaning nothing of any value happened.
Good thing I streamed that sh\t. I am predicting the PPV buys will be dismal.

I have no idea what boxing match some of you watched but Sugar Shane won that fight by 4 or 5 rounds. Mora looked horrible and boring as ever.

i was thinking “o just about every one will be in agreement about this fight.” Mosley won because mora didn’t want to fight even worst still mora thought he won. i thought that would drive boxing fans nuts. but the reaction i am getting on the blogs is way different, makes me want to watch the fight again because what they are saying i did not see.

In fact he wants to cement it. Nobody jumps too quicly and that is why he tests at catchweight first and after that goes fully at the weight. In the Cotto fight he tested the power slowly and when he realized he could take it he went from speed to power shots.

I am a huge fan of Manny and Mosley. I do not care for Mora and am not a fan although I respect him as a boxer. Let me state her that Manny should be facing Marquez, not Margo. IMO Mosley looked confused and winded again and lost that fight.
As a long time boxing fan I cannot confirm it was a robbery because it was a somewhat subjective fight.
All the accounts I have read are split between fans and experts. The judges were the ones who made the call and I accept their decision. I am not a conspiracy theorist guy but I know Dave Bontempo and his partner had Mora winning easily but HBO had it different.
I have agreed and disagreed with Lederman many times in the past so before we hurl insults, remember you nor I can change the result. In previous fights where for sure the whole world knew it was robbery, all we ever got was a rematch. Peace!

The fact that 2 of 3 judges didn’t award Shane the fight does justify the draw (one of those judges is the brother to Kenny Bayless, and the other judge is long-time and respectable judge Lou Moret – even with unpopular decisions, I like to side with the judges who are trained and are ringside with different vantage points).

Actually, I think Mora’s team was telling him how Lederman was scoring the fight – not that they felt Mora was losing but that Lederman was scoring the fight against him (you may recall at that moment in the corner Mora clearly saying “I thought that I was winning, I promise that I’ll win these next 2 rounds”).
Anyway, I’m OK with the draw because I’m not sure either fighter deserved to win the fight. The way I saw it, Mora was trying too hard not to get hit, and Mosley was trying too hard to hit Mora.
Punchstats notwithstanding (because as you know, punchstats don’t tell the whole story…), Mora was much better defensively and with ring generalship, and Mosley was a much more effective aggressor (clean punching could have gone either way).

EVERYONE knew stylistically is was going to be ugly. At the end of the day Mosley should have comfortable walked away the winner. I had him a head so far that I didn’t even watch the end until I overheard the scorecards in the back ground.
No matter how you “called” it it was clear as day who won. The fact the scorecards where so far off doesn’t justify the fight being a draw. Mora knew he lost as did his corner when they stated he was like 6 rounds behind. Easily.
I do believe the HBO announsers were mosely fans,But I can only imagine if you were a Mora fan and had to watch him hold and run and occasionaly throw a surprise punch that lands unexpectingly.

The decision is the decision. You thought Mosley won? Well, two official and professional ringside judges didn’t see that (also, the HBO announce team was being VERY biased when scoring the fight – there were PLENTY of times when Mora was landing clean shots but the HBO team would say NOTHING, but then when Mosley would throw one wild shot they would get quite excited about it).
As I said would happen, Mosley struggled in this fight. The truth is, Mora let this fight get away by not fighting more. Had he fought more, then he would have won.
I think the fact that Mosley agrees that the decision was a good one says it ALL. He didn’t really feel like he won the fight and he knows he certainly struggled (no matter how anyone tries to spin it).
I wonder if Mosely was given any credit for the hard body shots.even being held so much of the fight he outlanded mora by double the stats.

More like mora reciueved gift draw ,for the first nine rounds mora won 3 rounds at best,with running and tieing up Mosely,and occasional pot shot when after a snakey tie up.This reff was not doing his job.every time mosely engaged inthe first 7 or 8 rounds he was wrapped up the reff only saying dont hold.,let him go.that would have been a disqualification in the amateurs for sure.Sure Mora landed a few shots that looked clean ,but he lost the fight in the first 10 rounds by a mile.and the last two were even,either way.

Mosley was the aggressor and he threw more punches but that was it. Mora made him look silly at times. Sure he ran but he is not a bomber so why stand up and trade with Mosley when it is a known fact that he has problems with movers?
When Shane was younger he had better foot speed, not great but better. He still has decent hand speed and certainly has not lost his power. Why would Mora play into his strengths and not use his own which is boxing and movement? I cannot understand why people write in and ask such inane questions. It is like watching a distance race where some athletes set a blistering pace to take the strength away from those who have speed at the end. Conversely, the guys with speed try to slow it down. People it is called strategy.
Each person is trying to impose the style that gives them the best chance to win. Mosley tried very hard but once again he looked gassed and ineffective, only this time it a bit later and not from the 2nd rd. To those who mention that he threw the most shots, again many of them landed on arms and are not considered to be effective scoring. Besides like tennis, you can win 2 sets 6-0, 6-0 but lose the next 3 -6-7, 6-7 & 5-7, Sure you have won more games but lost 2 sets to 3.
I am a huge Mosley fan and have been for years. I do not feel Mora is a great boxer and doubt he will ever make it to the HOF like Mosley will. But he beat Mosley like an old dirty carpet. I suspect that his win over Margarito might have been misleading. 1. It is possible that Margarito may have been distracted by the glove wrap issue. 2. He is a stationary target anyway and 3. At his age Mosley probably was inactive for too long and it looks like he is showing his age.
He looked slow, confused and unscientific regarding what to do about Mora’s movement. His history is regular fighting. We have to take another look at his ‘Money” fight and we will see the same signs after the 2nd rd. Like my other favourite Super Roy, I hope Shane quits now before he continues to tarnish his legacy with losses to lesser fighters. Or worse gets seriously hurt.

I was watching the fight live myself and I also think that Mora won the fight by at least 2 rounds but not so lopsided as portrayed by this writer…Both though looked terrible in this fight but a draw is likewise acceptable because it was so convincing.

Mora only picked up the action when Mosley got tired. I don’t think it was the worse decsicion, but i thought Mosley pulled it out with the last round, i had it for Mosley by either 1 or 2 points. But it means nothing; as Mosley looked bad during the fight and i don’t see him as a top contender anymore. In this division there are young lions as Angulo and Alvarez. Even Dzinuruk can beat Mosley at this point, so yes Mosley was robbed, but he can’t beat the top dogs anymore, so it means nothing.

All I know is that the HBO commentators and unofficial judge Harold Lederman had it for Mosley so did the ESPN judges. I haven’t seen the fight yet but I thought Mora would win it hands down because Shane’s old. The boxing writers and the fans can’t seem to agree just like the judges. I’m new at this so someone tell me a website I can get the whole fight downloaded on. I’ll make a decision from there.
