Image: Maccarinelli-Frenkel: Look for Alexander to destroy Enzo in fourBy Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO cruiderweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (32-4, 25 KO’s) is one of those fighters that you naturally want to see win after all the hard luck the guy has suffered in the past years with his three knockout losses. On Saturday night, the 6’4” Maccarinelli will be fighting Ukrainian Alexander Frenkel (22-0, 17 KO’s) in a fight for Maccarinelli’s EBU cruiserweight title at the LG Arena, in Birmingham. I really want Maccarinelli to do well and find success. Goodness knows, boxing needs a fighter like him with his explosive power and his exciting. Maccarinelli is like the cruiserweight version of Wladimir Klitschko.

Unfortunately, Maccarinelli doesn’t have a great trainer like Emanuel Steward to teach him how to use his height to fight on the outside and protect his glass jaw. And because Maccarinelli doesn’t seem to be able to fight on the outside, he’s going to be getting in this fight and probably getting hit a lot. Well, with Maccarinelli’s weak chin, I don’t see this fight going very long. Frenkel is a power puncher and he’s very good at knocking his opponents out.

That’s all the guy does is knock people out, and if you put him in with a fighter with a glass jaw, he’s going to destroy them. As much as I want Maccarinelli to win this fight, I think he’s going to get destroyed again. Frenkel is going to ruin Maccarinelli’s dreams of recapturing a cruiserweight title when he knocks Maccarinelli cold in front of a larger British crowd.

If Maccarinelli had a great American trainer like Steward or Freddie Roach, I think Maccarinelli could learn enough to protect his fragile chin, but he doesn’t have those guys training him. As such, Maccarinelli is going to get in close to Frenkel and wind up getting blasted out in the 4th round, if the fight goes that long. My advice for Maccarinelli is for him to move to the United States after he gets knocked out and look to see if Steward or Roach will train him. It might be too late though. Another knockout loss for Maccarinelli, and I doubt Roach or Steward would take him.
