Is Andre Berto worthy of fighting Mayweather or Pacquiao?

By Marquise Bullock: When people think of Andre Berto (26-0 20kos) they think young, inexperience champion. But when I think Andre Berto, I think young, hungry champion, with enough heart, and skill to compete with the two top pound for pound fighters in the world today. Sure he’s inexperienced at the higher levels, but when Floyd Mayweather (41-0- 25kos) took on Genaro Hernandez for the World Boxing Council Super Featherweight title, he was inexperienced also.
Now I think we all now the controversy surrounding the Margarito and Pacquiao fight. But I think a young hungry Berto would’ve been better competition for the 7 time world champion Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is great no doubt. But I’ve seen him beat to many of the same style of fighters. Now Pacquiao fans would argue and say who has Berto fought, but ask yourself who has Hatton fought before he took on Floyd, or Tarver before he took on Jones, and the list goes on. If an unknown Clottey can get a shot and sell 700,000 PPVs, a proven cheater in Margarito, I’m sure a little bit of 24/7 on HBO to hype up The Haitian American Berto would sell a fight with Pacquiao through the roof. Margarito is getting lucky under Arum as of now, but I think a slick, young, hungry champion in Berto is a better look for Pacquiao’s resume. Also it would prepare him for a bout with the “Pretty Boy”, knowing that Mayweather is no mummy in the ring just like Manny’s
past opponents. Share and enjoy.

While I think Berto has a puncher’s chance, he hasn’t actually proved that he could beat anyone at welterweight of consequence.
I like Berto, but I’ve seen him struggle against opposition that he shouldn’t have. I’ve also seen him look a bit desperate at times down the stretch in his fights.
This isn’t to say that Berto couldn’t upset Mayweather or Pacquiao, as a puncher’s chance is just that: a puncher’s chance. However, Berto is carrying knockout, one shot power. He hasn’t had any real bouts against someone who would make us think he’s ready for a major title shot. And he isn’t especially fast or durable.
So I guess I’m saying that time will tell. Berto has more to prove and honestly, its kind of unfair to mention Berto fighting either of these guys so early. Its putting pressure on Team Berto to move him along faster than they should to satisfy sport writers and their opinions.

I’ve got the same list for Mayweather as I do Pac, not only that Mayweather at least fights fighters who are some what “deserving” as appose to Pac lately. Clottey? No, just came off a loss. Margarito.. need no explanation.
There is much more to boxing than the over rated Top Rank selections that are presented to Pac that he is so willingly to accept.

this is the fight i want to see if the mayweather pac goes derailed. definitely much much better than margarito and clottey. but bob is a greed and he is an american and these are all happening in america.

Styles make fights. Berto has the PERFECT style to put Pacquiao on the canvass in a hurry.
Mayweather would school him. Mayweather has too much talent, too much skill for anybody in the WW Division today.
Pacquiao is 1 Dimensional, he hights the exact same way every single time with no adjustment. Berto would KO Pacquiao within 5 rounds.
Any fighter ranked in the top 5 of the WW Division, could beat Pacquiao. The world has been fooled. We will all soon be awakened.

Floyd mentioned receiving $60 million instead of $40 million. So Floyd has undeclared income, has he??
Well I might as well alert the IRS about this.
Berto has yet to reach top billing status. If you read a later article, Berto will fight in the undercard of the Marquez-Katsidis fight. He is not yet the main eventer so how can he expect to fight the super stars of boxing?

Berto would probably not beat either Mayweather or Pacquaio, but you could make several arguments to suggest he could beat either or both. There is more risk fighting Berto than any of the other contenders.
I expect we will never know because Berto is set to be frozen by the rest. And partly because his own management might want him to stick around rather than risk much.

Good article. Berto is one of my favorite fighters and very underrated. His fight with Collazo was so entertaining.
The only problem with Berto is that he has that tendency to bull rush in and then hold after throwing something. It’s annoying, one of my least favorite strategies to watch.
But yes, Berto had more right to fight Margarito IMO.

boxing better start letting the best fight the best and soon, I am a 65 year boxing fan, at first when i saw MMA fighting I was disgusted,and thought it was ugly, but now as i watch it more i see that these guys and gals REALLY fight and the Best fights the best,with no fake fony decisions.Watch out Boxing if a man like me who Loves Boxing starts to like MMA…………
Uh, the real question is…are clottey and margarito worthy of fighting pac? berto is no superstar but he’s easily one of the guys who qualify.
berto has done all he can do. floyd,manny,paul williams all that is left.
Nice article,just a few points.
1.Berto is definately worthy of a shot.Has good Floyd and Manny are,they should not be out of reach for possible quality opponents.Especially unbeaten ones.Otherwise what’s the whole point of being a champion or contender.
2.I understand what you mean by the displeasure of seeing Floyd beat if it were’nt in a megafight.But the flipside is if Berto beat him,that we could possibly have a new major name on the scene.Which can only be good!Also upsets are part of boxing folklore.
3.Hatton did fight Tzyu before Floyd,who was a great champion and a big name.Even though some people say he was past his best,he did look sensational in his fight with Mitchell before he fought Hatton.
Even IF he wasn’t, that’s still more deserving than Margarito.
He’s never been suspended for cheating or attempting to cheat and more importantly he’s never lost. He’s fought on HBO and has a small name/small fan base for himself so far. A little help of HBO promoting and a name like Pacquiao next to his with the “VS” in the middle and you would have an undefeated star in the making.
The only problem is, he’s not Top Rank which makes him not so deserving on every level no matter how good, “too good”, deserving or how big of a name he has. It JUST doesn’t matter because Top Rank can’t seem to land Pac a deal/fight outside of Top Rank. Why is that?
Is that an agenda? Is that being selfish? Is that just being a poor promoter on Arum’s part? Is that Team Pac avoiding everyone else?
Either way Andre Berto, deserving or not deserves a pay day more than Margarito who’s coming off a year suspension and a horrible “win” against a no name journeyman in Mexico. The fight before that he was KO’ed by Mosley, a guy Mayweather just took to school for 12 rounds and since Mayweather “beat” Mosley, he’s now considered “old”, “washed up”, “a shell of his former self” and a “never has been”. So what does that make Margarito who was just DESTROYED by this guy? What does that say about Top Rank and Pac? What does that say about the Congressman who’s so willingly to give a “cheater” a pay day?
Yet according to Top Rank, Berto is not worthy? Let alone anyone else in boxing outside of Top Rank. No wonder MMA/UFC is catching up in the popularity contest. Is Pac the new Mayweather?
Berto had the opportunity to really show what he was made of when Paul Williams called him out about a comment he made on HBO as being the best welterweight in the world. Instead his promoter had to pull his ass out of hot water. He should have took the challenge and prove what he is made out of. Berto stop cherry picking if you want to be recognized.
I welcome your point. It’s a good alternative than pitting Pacman with the usual merry-go-round fighters while Floyd is still thinking of how to prolong his vacation to let the storm pass.
