Haye-Harrison: 17,000 tickets already sold for their November 13th bout

By Matt Stein: With slightly less than two months to go before the November 13th clash between World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) and Audley Harrison (27-4, 20 KO’s), there are a reported 17,000 tickets that have already been sold for the fight, which will be taking place at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. This is an astounding number, because the Arena seats 23,000 at full capacity and it would be huge if the fight were to sell out this early on. It would be a big sign of how popular heavyweight champion Haye is, because Harrison doesn’t bring in big numbers like this in his fights.

It’s strange that the fans are scooping up the Haye-Harrison tickets, because outside of the UK, this fight is seen somewhat as a joke. Boxing fans outside of England see it as Haye cherry picking an easy opponent to try and milk his WBA heavyweight title for as long as he can before taking on and losing to one of the Klitschko brothers. However, if Haye is able to get these kinds of numbers fighting less than the very best heavyweight contenders in the division, it’s kind of telling.

It shows that Haye’s British fans will pay to see him in high numbers no matter who he fights. It’s kind of reminiscent of the Filipino fans attraction to watching Pacquiao’s fights. They purchase his fights in high numbers, even when he’s facing opponents that are less than popular and who are hopelessly over-matched. Outside of the UK, boxing fans pretty much only care to see Haye fight one of the Klitschko brothers. They’ve already see Haye take on a bunch of older heavyweights since moving up in weight from cruiserweight in 2008.

Fans are now interested in seeing Haye finally fight a good heavyweight for a change. They’re going to have to wait a little longer until Haye gets done with the “London championship,” which is the name that IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has given to Haye’s bout with Harrison. It’s hoped that once Haye gets a certain amount of milking down of his WBA title, that he’ll finally want to take on the Klitschko brothers. He doesn’t have a lot of time with Haye talking about retiring next year at 31. If he’s going to be fighting the Klitschko brothers, he needs to do it soon.

Harrison, 38, has a puncher’s chance of beating Haye. Harrison has to attack Haye early and look to take him out before Haye can stun Harrison with one of his pot shots that he likes to throw. Harrison has the power to take Haye out, but he’s got to get past his timid fighting style and look to take Haye out with one of his killer shots before Haye gets warmed up.

fake me..you sound like you are 12…maybe 13…if you are going to be funny, you might try being clever…

  • j jackson says:

    @ vitali quitsko

name the place…i will fight you…i travel all around the globe and i am often in places like nuneaton and pratville and whoop whoop…if you are near any of those places tell me your address and i will get in your ring…i love getting in other men’s rings and pounding them real hard…if i met you, you would be on your knees before me after taking a pounding…no joke.

and vitali klitschko was only knocked out by a kick from pele reid because pele was a footballer who was ranked no.1 by ring magazine…it was not fair letting a footballer do kicking in the ring…if they faced now vitali would destroy pele because pele isn’t a footballer anymore and will not be allowed to kick…and he is also impotent…but he is still better than david haye who is ranked lower than pele on boxrec and ring…i read in ring magazine that vitali and vladimir and pele reid would beat david haye so it is true.

  • BIG STUFF says:

Now if they put 23,000 bums in seats, as they call it in the Uk……….wouldn’t dare strike a match in the place, it will wreak of alcohol and and B O.

  • rick says:

    Quitsko

Pele Reid stopped Vitali with a kick not a punch. Get your facts straight also please. Vitali has never been knocked down or out by a punch.

  • McJack says:

Don’t blame the Klitschko’s if half the contenders in the heavyweight division are afraid to fight them. Historically they have fought the top contenders. The great Muhammad Ali fought Leon Spinks in 1978. Spinks, who only had 7 fights at the time beat Ali. This set up a return in which Ali won the title by a decision. Ali was 36 years old at the time.

  • mike says:

It is a dumb fight in many respects, but financially the right fight according to interest and ticket sales.

  • Failapino Hostage Takers Suck says:

rofl if you call losing the mortgage on your house betting on an overhyped protected fighter with a padded record who gets crushed when he steps up to world class talent being a ‘good fan’….

Jolly Old England :D good one.
Championship of London. A champion who only fight old boxers, except Vitali

  • PATPUMP says:

Haye looks like he just saw Wlad the Impailer walk into the room.

  • Failapino Hostage Takers Suck says:

LOL, Brits are that desperate for a champion to claim as their own and to cheer for that they support a fake like Haye.

    SMH.

You guys are just setting yourselves up for another gut-wrenching loss IF (big if) Haye ever gets forced to fight a Klitschko.

    Same $hit happened with Hatton.

Just this time around, don’t bet your mortgages.

    LOL.

  • Millwall says:

You Germans who have adopted these boring brothers from Ukraine because as a boxing nation your a joke, are going to be in for a bit of a shock when Haye finishes off your two heroes and they go back to the Ukraine to get fat on all that money you’ve wasted watching them fight. Sosnowski, Briggs, Peters etc, you talk about handpicked opponents by Haye, there isn’t a space big enough here to write the names of all the bums the Klitchko meat heads have fought, if thats what you call it.

  • $$$ says:

Assuming Haye gets past Harry in November; even if he doesn’t, we should see Wlad grab that last strap in say what, March/April 2011? Cause there is no reason that the winner of H vs. H shouldn’t, nay won’t, can’t, fight Wlad after that…

  • JJ96 says:

honestly does anyone know whether there are any negotiations going on..

  • Pete says:

    ha, ha,

I bet the haters on here will be first ones to purchase their pay per views.

  • justbeinghonest says:

Haye might be running from the Klits. But, he is running all the way to the bank. I won’t knock that man’s hustle.

  • Huddo says:

    @patpump

once again you are slagging Haye. Just as you did before he fought Ruiz and said Ruiz would finish him.

Haye is full of it but so is every boxer apart from the Klits….honest opinion and Haye is running scared from the Klits.

  • Klitschko fan says:

17,000 are paying to see the championship of London and nothing more.

  • j jackson says:

david haye has never faced a good boxer…he is not good…his punches are too loopy to ever knock anyone down or even out…if he faced vladimir he would be not out because vladimir has an iron chin and can never be knocked out…and vladimir has faced 52 ring top ten fighters in his last 52 fights…whereas david haye has never faced anyone in the top 1 of the ring rankings…david haye talks a lot and most of it is mean..vladimir is never mean to anyone and most of his opponents agree…he often does not knock a man out until later in the fights because he is very nice…he could knock out any fighter in history in round 1 because steward said that he punches harder than the incredible hulk who used to be trained by steward…vladimir could knock out the incredible hulk because americans don’t care about the incredible hulk so it’s ok that the incredible hulk isn’t good enough although the incredible hulk could be champion if he was from britain because it’s easy to be a champion if you’re from britain but not many are because britain is not good…in britain boxers don’t know how to box and they feed their babies phosphorus so that their jaws are especially weak…david haye is just not good face it.

  • BIG STUFF says:

Another bad joke from Jolly Old England, what’s next from the Limey’s .

  • Anonymous says:

Haye, only a paper champ. We look for him to fight Vitali k. after he does his somewhat dangerous defense against fellow country man harrison who needs to stalk and punish Haye.

  • mcgoo says:

Works both ways. No one in the UK gives a Damn about timothy Bradley or demon Alexander until they fight khan . that’s the reason you have fights in your home country because that’s where your FANS are. dumbass article. you think anyone would turn up to a Chris arreola or Kevin Johnson fight in France? real basic stuff here- left foot right foot kind of thing

  • gary fortune says:

author hasnt got a clue !! dumbing down teh British boxing fans !! we all know Klitchko is teh fight !!! and belive me Harrison is the reason the tickets r selling, because every 1 is wanting to see harrison get layewd out cold, infact now i even have friends who hated harrison so bad but now they want him 2 win and land a lucky one on haye !! yes i have bought 3 tickets fo rme and my 2 brothers, not because we love Haye or we no little off boxing, but because we want 2 see Harrison get dropped or rase his game and see haye get embarrised !!

  • DeadScered says:

17T at the very least will see Haye kiss the canvas live!

  • mooshka says:

David Haye looks like Charles Manson.

  • Chase-Dallas says:

Only people who stand to make money on this fight give a hang. I’ll laugh if David haye gets sparked out and loses his belt and a chance to unify the division against the Klitschko’s.

  • Joe says:

W Klitschko are interested in the PPV money from sky if they fight Chisora. It could earn them a lot more than there German TV money

  • PATPUMP says:

I wonder how quiet the Manchester arena is going to be 30 seconds into the fight and Haye gets knocked cold by a Harrison left hook.

  • noelpogi says:

They want to see Haye get KO that’s why and not being popular.

  • Bern says:

It seems the British will buy anything, I ashamed! Its getting more like America each day. It wouldn’t suprise me if David Haye started saying things like,” you have to come to the uk to prove yourself as a heavyweight” just like they do in the US. Boxing is going to sh*t! Marketing is fooling them all!

Long live the true fans of boxing, where ever you are in the world!

  • brianmaciver says:

klitchkos rule the heavywieght plain and simple haye is all mouth and no action

  • Cunning says:

As much as I would have preferred Haye to take on a Klitschko, I can’t help but think Haye v Harrison will be a good fight on the eyes, Haye is easily the most exciting heavyweight to watch and Harrison will be going all out to prove everyone wrong, and as for the British fans… History shows they are loyal and passionate whoever their boxers are up against, Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton fans travelled all over the world to support their fighters.

  • Jim says:

Of course the Klitschkos haven’t milked their titles one bit have they? lol

  • Adam Booth says:

    Get off Haye’s nutsack, Matt.

Not only do the rest of the world find this a joke, but the BOXING fans here in the UK recognize it for what it is, too. And no, it’s not Haye alone that’s generating the overwhelming hype in this country, it’s Audley too!

As inferior as he is, Audley has been a household name for far longer than Haye. And it’s a fact that this fight would not garner as much attention had the opponent been someone else. For example….why don’t we compare the ticket/PPV sales of Haye/Ruiz to Haye/Audley?

  • Joe says:

Its not astounding, its a British Heavyweight World title fight. To the casual public its very attrtactive place to go for a night out.

  • j j says:

its not only outside the uk this fight is seen as a joke, still find it hard to believe how easy it is to get a world title then fight who ever u want .even more supprising people are paying to see the fight.the world champions are wlad and witali these two jokers arnet even in the same leauge.
