Hatton says “I am not retired”

By William Mackay: In his boxing news column at the Manchestereveningnews, former IBF light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) made it a point to says he’s not retired from the sport, and made the usual comment about possibly one day having the urge to fight. This is what Hatton said: “I’d like to clarify the position regards to my boxing career once again. As usual, one sentence out of many can take a conversation out of context, and until you hear it officially from the horse’s mouth, I am not retired. I have renewed my license and if I wake up one day and the urge is there, you’ll be the first to know.”

Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it all before, Hatton is waiting to see if he gets “The hunger” for the sport before he decides to hang it up or not officially. With over a year since he Hatton last fought, he might as well retire because it looks pretty clear he probably won’t be making comeback. Heck, Hatton looks to be 60 pounds overweight and taking that kind of weight off will be a killer for him. My advice is for Hatton to hang the gloves and save himself the wasted time in someday making what almost surely be a fruitless effort in making a comeback. I think Hatton should retire. The longer he stays out, the larger he will probably get and putting on that kind of weight will pretty much make the decision about a boxing comeback for Hatton.

It’s one thing have to trim off 60 pounds but quite another trying to pare off 100 pounds of flab. That’s just not feasible for a fighter that fought at light welterweight. At this point if Hatton were to come back, I see him having only limited success. He might be able to beat some fringe contenders but I think Hatton would be destroyed by the 1st tier stars like Marcos Maidana, Devon Alexander, Timothy Bradley and Victor Ortiz.

If Hatton does decide to come back, he needs to do turn off the television, get off the couch, lock himself away in some medieval training camp miles away from human civilization and then come back and take on someone like Amir Khan. That’s the only fight for Hatton at this point as far as I’m concerned. I don’t the boxing public would buy into a rematch between Hatton and Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao without Hatton taking on two or three tough fighters and beating them to prove that he’s back. I can’t see Hatton doing that, so he might as well fight Khan. I’m not holding my breath on that happening. Hatton needs to retire.

Mackey you mention khan being the guy he should fight if he comes back! Khan is the guy he shouldn’t fight any one else at 140 I give him a good chance if he can get back into decent shape. Do you have something against khan? I ain’t his biggest fan but as a boxer surely got the best skills at 140. I don’t think hatton really has his heart in fighting any more and will probably stay retired but hatton was a good honest fighter who saught out the best he could get his hands on taking 10,000 Brits over to Vegas with him for some of his fights how many other fighters in the world pull that sought of a home following abroad?

  • Chase-Dallas says:

Ricky deserves to do what he wants. He has done wonders for boxing and even more for merry old. Nobody has the right to critisize him. He was great at his peak and only lost to the best fighters of the last ten years. Nothing to be ashamed of.

  • Ian says:

I think it’s up to him. He knows the risks and he knows the rewards but personally, I don’t think that he has the look of a man who plans on going anywhere near a boxing ring every again (as a competetor).

  • fktardo says:

looks like his double chin’s a having a baby

  • weslad says:

He if was gonna get the urge to come back and redeem himself ,youd think it would have hit him by now,the longer he leaves it the likely he has of mounting a comeback and the more damaging its gonna be to his health.i would hate to watch khan give ricky a beating or some b rate boxer ko him, because in his prime he was awsome.
a prime ricky would hammer khan i dont care what anybody says.there only so much ring and once ricky caught up with him hed be far too strong fast and persistent khan would be in a very bad place.not forgotting rickys granite chin,(which seems to have faded)khans ribs would be like niknaks, snapped all over the ring.people forget how effiecient the hitman was at what he did.may not have been the best fluent boxer ,but what he lacked in boxing skills he certainly made up for in strength speed stamina and determination.

  • IwouldabeatKesslerinNottingham says:

    state of that double chin

  • Gero says:

Fatton needs to make his mind up… he’s embarrasing himself now.

  • Eric says:

    Whatever you say Fatton

  • Cargster says:

Hatton could fight Postman Pat and the place would be filled to the rafters. It shows that you have no idea how popular Ricky Hatton is here in the UK.

If he wants to come back let him come back, who are you to tell someone else how to live his life. Particularly when the man you are talking about has achieved more than most people could ever dream of achieving.

Only lost two fights in his career and they were both against the P4P 1 and 2. Not a bad record im sure you’ll agree.

Take your time Ricky and make whatever decision suits you, not everyone else.

  • lololol says:

crazy pic of the hitman… dude looks buzzed out on a night of binging or sumthin..
