Don’t be surprised when Khan KO’s Maidana

By Mark Hepplestall: World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan 23(17)-1(1)-0 is now scheduled to fight Marcos Maidana in a battle the public want to see, however there is a large amount of pessimism over khans chances to win. People keep saying how Khan is going to get KO’d because of his weak chin and Maidana’s 90% KO ratio, however I just see Maidana in well over his head in this fight.
So who has the advantage? Who is going to win the fight? Even though there is all this Maidana hype don’t be surprised if Khan wins by KO in round 5 or 6.
Here is a breakdown of Khan’s and Maidana’s attributes to see who has an advantage
Speed: Khan has a major speed advantage in this fight, khan is the fastest Light Welterweight in the division and was one of the fastest Lightweights in that division, if you don’t believe that ask Dmitriy Salita, he didn’t see any of the three punches that knocked him out. Speed is the most important attribute in boxing and in the words of Mike Tyson “speed kills”.
Technical Ability and Boxing Skills: Khan has better technical boxing ability and skills, he has a better jab and better combinations then Maidana, also adding speed he lands them faster than Maidana, also I think it is a very good time to point out Maidana’s fights show he is terribly one dimensional, his fight against Victor Ortiz showed this as Maidana was completely out-boxed until Maidana landed one Hail Mary shot that changed the fight around. Khan’s ability can be seen in his fight against Malignaggi who until he lost to Hatton was one of the top light welterweights in the division, also he isn’t known for being stopped easily.
Movement: Khans movement is sublime, against Andriy Kotelnik Khan totally outboxed Kotelnik and won all 12 rounds by using great movement to get in close and land 3, 4 and 5 shot combinations before retreating out of range for all 12 rounds. Maidana’s movement is in one direction forward and this is good against boxers with a weak chin like Khan.
Power: Maidana has an advantage over Khan with power but it’s only a slight advantage as only 6 of Khan’s opponents have seen the final bell. Maidana has only 2 opponents that have seen the final bell minus Kotelnik who he lost to in a very lose decision. However Power is determined by Speed X Mass + Precision, so the power difference is only marginal. Big names KO’d by Maidana include Victor Ortiz (TKO6) and Victor Cayo (KO6), while khans scalps include Paul Malignaggi (TKO9), Dmitriy Salita (TKO1).
Chin’s: Khan has the most undependable chin in the business since Wladimir Klitschko, plus Khan himself has no confidence in his chin and has had to change his game plan under the guidance of Freddie Roach to protect his chin and box with speed and movement. Marcos Maidana also has a suspect chin; he got dropped three times by Victor Ortiz landing combinations on Maidana’s body and chin, Ortiz doesn’t have near the same power as either Maidana or Khan. Biggest disadvantage for Maidana is his Warriors Spirit accompanied with a suspect chin, which is just suicide.
Opposition: Khan has fought mostly British and European fighters and a mix of brawlers and boxers, Khan has been protected until he was thrown in the deep end against Prescott and lost badly. Maidana has fought mostly Argentinean fighters who will stand in front of him, in Argentina with the rest of his fights in Germany and one in USA.
Overall Khan has a Speed, Movement and boxing ability Advantage but a china chin, while Maidana possesses power and a suspect chin. I expect Maidana to bulldoze forward but get picked off and out-boxed for the first 5 rounds and be taken out in the 6, 7 or 8th. Expect knock downs and beautiful boxing from khan and expect Maidana trying to land a Hail Mary punch when in trouble and trying to get inside and work the body. One thing we shall not expect is a Points Decision.

so maidana, who would have got more if it had gone to purse bids, was actually getting offered less than 45 percent to fight amir khan who has done nothing apart from beat kotelnik who maidana also beat.

This article contains a very good analysis. Should be a great fight. I predict Maidana will get caught, often and at will. Somewhere during the mid rounds, Khan will unleash a blistering combination and the ref will mercifully step in.
Khan needs to fight smart and let the knock out come as opposed to looking for it or he might get caught.

I don’t think Khan is going to KO Maidana, if he does beat Maidana it’s going to be by decision. Maidana has not been stopped. Khan on the other hand has been. Khan is going to try to protect his chin and play it safe and pot shot.

Mad is a dabgerous puncher … and he would genrally KO most he gets inside with and manages to land.
Khan is a different proposition to most types Mad ever ever stepped in with. Yes, Khan had a problem with Bredis Prescott, who is a tall and very rangey banger with long arms. Khan had entirely the wrong approach in the fight with Bredis. Infact, Micthell showed just how esy it was to out-box a very limited Prescott when he fought him.
So, with Khan v Mad … Mad is very effective when he is in close and in range … However, I am sure that Roach will devise a plan to keep Mad at Khan’s arm’s length, which will bee out of Mad’s naturall punching reach. I feel that if Khan does this ( think Khan v Barerra ), then Mad may well end up being KO’d … Mad doesn’t have a great chin himself, unlike Barerra, so the minute that Khan connects solidly, I see Mad going down.
Will be an interesting fight for as long as it lasts, I think.

First of all, big respect to Khan for taking this fight even though it’s his mandatory! Khan is definitely the better fighter of the two but I can’t help but worry that he is going to get knocked out in this fight. I just remember how badly marked up he was after both the Barrera and Malignaggi fights even with Freddie Roach in his corner and can’t help thinking that Maidana is going to blast him out pretty quickly, hope i’m wrong though!

What are you getting at ? No one knocks out Malinaggi not even prime ligh welterweight versions of Miguel Coto or Ricky Hatton. Cotto didnt even stop him, and Hatton did it in the same round as Khan.

I give each fighter a fifty/fifty chance if Maidiana goes right after Khan with the intent of cutting ring off he might be able to catch him with something big. But Khan has a true boxers ability to hurt a big puncher like Maidiana and he did beat Kotelnik by a wide margin and Kotelnik is the only to ever beat Maidiana. It will be a gut-check for Khan. If he gets by Maidiana I say he steamrolls over Alexander and goes for Bradley. Khan/Bradley in 2011 is the fight I want to see the most.
Khan should be too fast and powerful for him,under Roach he is a lot more ring savvy.Maidana got outboxed by Kotelnik and dropped by Ortiz so Khan should pick him off.However with Maidana`s power and Khan`s chin it makes this fight very intriguing.

i just cant see the headlines saying khan wins and ko’s maidana. i cant imagine a picture of maidana worn, battered and knocked out and khan victorious, it just doenst make any sense at all in my head for the simple reason that khans chin is f***ing awful.
its not just a little problem that can be protected and more skills developed to see it doesnt get hit, its a massive problem and one up until this match has been avoided like the plague.
he’s selected opponents that were no threat what so ever since he was ko’d and very reluctantly took this fight after trying his best to avoid it for the last year.

Who’ll KO whom? There’s only one way to find out: put Khan and Maidana in the same ring, and leave the rest to their lucky stars. I don’t care who wins, but I’m sure it’ll be one hell of a fight.

Regardless of who wins this fight how can anyone give khan respect? Maidana had to write a begging letter to the wba to get the fight. Before that maidana was paid to step aside for a year or 3 fights. During that year khan tried to get fights with 3 different lightweights. Marquez, katsidis and casamayor. He couldnt get them so he faught malignaggi, a guy who hasnt knocked anyone out in over 5 years. Khan fans, you dont have a champion to be proud of. Kinda says a lot about khan fans aswell.

Argiboy210: Did you really see that fight? In round 5 Maidana hit Cayo at will with a lot of body shots. In round 6 Cayo could not move any more and therefore was kot by maidana. Can Khan hold like Cayo on 5th round? I do not think so. It is difficult to imagine not a single round for maidana in the entire fight, unless Khan goes for the kot from the begining and thats suicidal against maidana.

it was maidana that requested the wba enforce the fight and so it was khan trying to get out of it as we all knew anyway.

this fight will come down to brute force because of maidanas style khan wont be able to escape exchanging with him, i expect khan to stay out of trouble for the first four or five rounds after which he will get into trouble in an unavoidable exchange and be knocked out.
Let’s see fighting off your back foot power does not generate. I take time to learn how to fight going back and counter punch your way to a victory. Khan can not do this. The fight will be great while it lasts. I think either guy can KO the other. I think Maidana has the slightly better chance of catching Khan first.
They say Khan is a boxer, but I think once he is hit, he would fight…say what you want but he is better when he comes forward and if tagged Khan will not be able to follow the game plan.

I won’t be surprised at all becouse nothing against Maidana but he is vastly over rated, if he hadn’t been in that cracker of a fight with Ortiz then no one would really want this fight becouse he wouldn’t be well known at all.
Amir Khan is vulnerable around the whiskers and Maidana can turn the lights out with one punch so I wouldn’t write him off completely but in reality I see a dominant Khan victory especially when Maidana has some questions to be answered about his own chin after being hurt several times himself.
Khan’s speed is the key I think becouse I don’t see Maidana being able to cope with it to be honest and he is far too easy to hit, Khan by KO in 8 rounds.
Suspected Chin?? Maidana was down by Ortiz 3 times but in all of them he seemed strong and with no shaky legs. I agree that Khan is a better boxer but the 3 most important skills of Maidana are his power shots, strong chin and heart. Ortiz is by far more powerful than Khan and could not KO Maidana. Almost impossible a KOT win by Khan. I think that Ortiz is better than Khan. This is the first time that Khan is going to fight with a real tough fighter. To be a true champion you have to have heart. He has not proved anything yet. Maidana did it.

Suspect chin is a stretch. Anyone drops after a clean hard punch. The fight will be tough, but if Maidana comes in like he did for Cayo and Ortiz… he wins. If not, Khan dances around to a boring UD win.

This fight should be a wash, as long as Khan fights defense first and keeps his chin tucked. I see nothing in Maidana except a lucky puncher’s shot that would change the result of this fight.
