Dirrell vs. Ward & Abraham vs. Froch to take place on November 27th

By Scott Gilfoid: The Super Six semifinal match-ups between Andre Ward vs. Andre Dirrell, and Carl Froch vs. Arthur Abraham will be taking place on November 27th, according to boxing news from ESPN. It appears that Dirrell and Ward’s management teams have gotten beyond their impasse and found a neutral location for their Super Six tournament fight. One great benefit of both fights taking place on the same night is that they will be shown as a “split continent doubleheader,” meaning that boxing fans will be able to see the bouts back to back without waiting for later in the day.

The Abraham vs. Froch fight will now be held in Helsinki, Finland. It was supposed to be taking place on October 2nd, in Monaco, but Froch injured his back and couldn’t make that date. It’s unclear why the venue was changed to Helsinki. The only question about the November 27th date is whether Froch’s ailing back will be healed enough for him to take the fight at that time. With his back injury, there’s a potential that it could still be giving him problems even two months from now and that would put a big monkey wrench into the plans of having him fight Abraham on that date.

Abraham is tired of waiting for Froch, as he’s already had to wait for a neutral venue to be found after Froch said he wouldn’t fight Abraham in Germany. Abraham last fought way back in March, losing by a 11th round technical decision to Dirrell. Abraham is used to fighting every four months and he’s already been waiting six months for Froch. By the time he enters the ring to fight Froch, if the fight does take place in November, Abraham will have been out of action for 8 long months. Under normal circumstances, Abraham would have been able to fight two times during that eight month period. He’s basically lost one payday during this waiting period.

The Ward-Dirrell fight could end up being the fight of the Super Six tournament, as both of these fighters have amazing talent and incredible boxing skills. Ward has easily beaten his first two Super Six tourney contestants Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green, and he’s now considered to be the likely winner of the tourney. However, Dirrell has the skills to neutralize everything that Ward can do and bring him down to earth. We could see Dirrell emerge as the winner of this bout and move on to take on the Froch vs. Abraham winner. I suspect Abraham will beat Froch by knockout, which will set up a rematch between Dirrell and Abraham. Dirrell already dominated Abraham in March.

@ BERN– THE WARD STORY HAS STARTED TO BE WRITTEN. THE WRITING IS IN MUD WITH PUS AND BLOOD.

The Yanks will win, European cavemen can’t box…

Guys am i reading this correctly? This seems like a half decent Gilfoid article?

I agree even as a Cobra fan that he has made Abraham stew for too long. Carl is slightly deluded after being well beaten last time out and is still acting like he is champion.

Still I reckon it will be a cracker when it does happen.

DeGale is already good enough to take on all those dudes. Even Groves would give them a lot of problems.
The talented Dirrell?, don’t make me laugh Scotty, I remember greats like Carlos Monzon and Marvin Hagler (Middleweights) and Michael Spinks (Lightheavyweight) when you were probably still in daipers.
All of them far superior and better fighters than any of those in this super six tourney.
    No super middleweights back then.

Junior jay- Fouling out of frustration is one thing but fouling out of cowardice is another. Constantly visiting the canvas without punch contact is disqualifiable and faking unconsciousness is despicable. Boxing is a sport contested by men not boys and the real boxing fan will not and cannot respect this tactic. Controversy will always follow Dirrell because of his questionable tactics; the Ward story is yet to be written!

  • Big Al says:

Dirrell’s idea of hit and don’t be hit is to embarrass himself by flying all over the ring and falling into the ropes and slipping down on the floor alot to avoid any punch thrown at him – he did that all kinds in against both Froch and Abraham. That’s not professional manner, he still has an amateur-style mentality. Froch roughed him up a little, but Dirrell exagerrated the bodyslam too. Remember? And he was already slipping and falling before the end of the Abraham fight. I totally disagree with hitting the guy when he’s down, but roughing up your opponents a little is a sad part of the game, ask Ward he should know – he does it with his head. Its as old as clinching. This is PROFESSIONAL boxing, NOT amateur. It’s supposed to be rougher and grittier – that’s why we remember the great moments and fighters because they were able to find ways to deal with it.

Froch and AA are warriors no doubt about it, and direll and ward are less exciting and focus on not getting hit. Froch and AA were considered two of the best in the division and wrad and dirrell were two up and coming guys who were feresh out of friday night fights. yet in the ring it was froch and AA who got schooled, needing to foul out of frustration. Like it or not, and most people don’t even I thought direll ran too much vs froch, but movement is a part of the game, a professional will find a way to adjust in a professional manner. Cmon guys, I know boxing gets your animal instincts going, and you make it about the stongest and the most powerful and whoever wins is more of a man right? Sorry, boxing will always be about hit and don’t be hit. I think the fact that the europeans were seen as the best in the division, and the americans were young up and comers is why everyones mad. If you aint got the mentallity to stay calm and composed you aint gonna win.

  • lobo says:

Maybe ward will foul direll while direll is running away and then direll will fake a fall and then ward will head butt him when hes down and then………

  • Big Al says:

What the heck? Scott, I think you only write on the Ward-Dirrell situation and ignore everything else. Showtime had a great vision for this tourney:
    1st stage: Fight1: USAvsEURO, Figth2: USAvsEURO, Fight3: USAvsEURO
    2nd stage: Fight1:USAvsEURO, Fight2: USAvsEURO, Fight3: USAvsUSA

They had the odds figured pretty good, becuase they had already planned a USA vs EURO fight in the Main Event – that’s why Ward vs Dirrell (USA vs USA) and Froch vs Abraham (EURO vs EURO). They also figured that Kessler would have been the favorite against whoever was in Jermain Taylor’s slot (probably why Green got to replace him). It was have been an awsome tourney had all the dates and scheduled names fought each other, but postponements and injuries/withdrawals changed it all.

  • Argiboy210 says:

winner of Ward Vs Dirrel will hold the WBA and WBC titles

yet the winner of Froch Vs Abraham will be the peoples champion which is much more important

tells you all you need to know about this tourny now

  • rockycreed says:

froch so over rated, calzaghe would of beat him with ease

  • Rmijn says:

Can’t wait to See a rematch. Love to See how
    Abe Takes dirrell’s head of

  • straightup says:

…before acting his way out of losing by KO.
