Image: Dirrell says Ward fight is "Just Postponed, not off"By Scott Gilfoid: For boxing fans wondering about whether Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KO’s) and Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 Ko’s) were going to be dropping out of the Super Six tournament. Dirrell, 26, had this to say in response to Dan Rafael on his Twitter page, “Just postponed as I know, not off.” Dirrell, of course, is talking about his scheduled September 25th Super Six tournament bout against Ward, a fight which they still don’t have a venue for after all this time. The venue has been the main sticking point in arranging the fight. Dirrell already has fought once in a foreign country and he lost a controversial decision to Carl Froch in Dirrell’s first fight of the Super Six tourney.

Dirrell then rebounded from that defeat by beating Arthur Abraham by an 11th round disqualification victory while fighting at home in Detroit, Michigan. Dirrell actually lives in Flint, Michigan, but he fights out of Detroit. Ward, on the other hand, has fought both of his fights at home in Oakland, California. Ward, and his promoter, want to fight a third time at home, but Dirrell and his promoter want the fight to take place in Detroit. That’s where everything has become stuck. But the fight will be taking place, as Dirrell said. That’s really good news because both of these fighters have so much talent and the winner of this fight will have a cakewalk in beating the winner of the October 2nd European match-up between former World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Froch and Abraham.

It would be a real pity for Dirrell and Ward to walk out on the tourney and miss getting crowned after beating Froch or Abraham in the Super Six final. The winner of that fight will have big money fights against Mikkel Kessler and Lucian Bute and possibly Jean Pascal, if he’s still the WBC light heavyweight champion by next year. Those are three big fights for the winner of the Super Six.

Dirrell or Ward, one of those guys are going to be in the perfect position to take over for Floyd Mayweather Jr. as boxing’s biggest star. Mayweather probably won’t be around too much longer, and we should start seeing cracks in his facade as he starts to lose his skills through inactivity and age. Dirrell and Ward are perfect positioned to take over and become the new stars of the sport. But they need to stick it out in the Super Six tourney and finish it on top.
