Briggs wants David Haye next after Klitschko

By Jim Dower: Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs is already thinking ahead to his next bout after he deals with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on October 16th at the World Arena, in Hamburg, Germany. Briggs, 38, is unhappy with World Boxing Association David Haye for making light of Briggs’ asthma condition.

This is a touchy topic for Briggs, who takes his condition very seriously. Briggs says “David Haye is next up for a great a** whipping after I take care of Vitali.’ Obviously, Briggs would like to fight Haye for more than just revenge.

A bout with Haye would no doubt give Briggs a huge and that would go nicely with the one he’ll be getting for the Vitali fight. It’s unclear what the rematch clause is for his contract with Vitali. Obviously, there’s a rematch clause for his fight with Vitali, but it’s unclear whether Briggs has to fight Vitali immediately after or if he can squeeze in one fight before having to satisfy the rematch clause.

It would make it that much harder to get a fight with Haye if Briggs is forced to beat Klitschko twice in a row before he’s allowed to defend his title against another fighter.

Number #3 on Briggs’ list of opponents he wants to fight in the future is IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who Briggs says has been ducking him for years. Briggs thinks Wladimir is “Mentally weak” and not as good as his brother Vitali.

A fight between Briggs and Haye would be of great interest for boxing fans not only in the UK, but also in the United States, but that’s only if Briggs is able to prove himself by beating Vitali.

Right now, no ones giving Briggs much of any chance of beating Klitschko. However, if he does beat him, it would make a fight with Haye a big deal and would give Briggs a storybook comeback similar to George Foreman’s comeback in his mid 40s.
