Tua to fight Meehan or Haumono on November 25th

By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight contender David Tua (51-3-2, 43 KO’s) will likely be back in action on November 25th against either 40-year-old Kali Meehan ((35-4, 29 KO’s) or Solomon Haumono, according to boxing news from >stuff.co.nz. Tua, 37, is coming off a disappointing 12 round draw with journeyman Monte Barrett on July 17th.

What made the results of that fight especially bad for Tua was that he didn’t finish strong. Tua was knocked down by Barrett in the 12th and was clearly hurt. To his credit, he got up off the canvas and continued to fight well for the rest of the round buy it wasn’t a good sign that Tua was knocked down in that fight.

Tua will be turning 38 in November and he needs to speed up his progress if he wants to get a title shot before it’s too late. Tua reportedly turned down a fight against New Zealand heavyweight champion Chauncy Welliver, even though it would have meant that Tua would have gotten a shot against WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Tua probably would be destroyed if he were to fight Wladimir. It’s probably for the best that Tua not fight Wladimir now or ever because he just doesn’t match up with him.

Tua may later on wish he had taken that fight while he still could, but Meehan could very well beat Tua. Meehan may be getting up there in age at 40, but Tua is close behind at 37. And Tua would be giving up a lot of height and reach to the 6’5” Meehan if they were to fight. Since Tua looked pretty terrible in his last fight, I doubt his promoter will allow him to fight Meehan.

It’ll probably be Haumono who gets the call with Tua. This would be more along the lines of the typical B level opponent that Tua has been feasting on for the past nine years.
