Segura stops Calderon in 8th round!!!

By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KO’s) finally met up with an opponent he couldn’t out-box in WBA fly light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (25-1-1, 21 KO’s), who stopped Calderon in the 8th round of a scheduled 12 round bout at the Coliseo Mario ‘Quijot’ Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The 35-year-old Calderon looked great in the early going, using his jab and a lot of movement to confound the Mexican slugger. It looked for awhile there like Calderon was going to be able to easily out-box Segura and hold onto his title. However, in the 5th round Segura hurt Calderon with a series of hard shots to the head. Segura continued to batter Calderon in the 6th round, as he was now showing his power advantage over the smaller Calderon.

The movement that Calderon had used early to keep out of range of Segura, was no longer effective. Segura was able to cut off the ring on Calderon more and more and punish him with brutal shots. Finally, in the 8th round Segura finished off Calderon with a hard body shot. The referee Jose Hiram Rivera stopped the fight at 1:34 of the 8th. In the end, Segura was too powerful for Calderon to handle.

I wish I saw the fight but instead I got suckered in to watch James Toney wrestling. Very disappointing!

  • john says:

the strategy the way calderon was beaten is the same strategy the way mayweather will taste his first defeat in the future too. simply because they have the same style of hit and run then clinch. ha. ha. ha. ha. i love it!

  • Cruz says:

@solo…Calderon moves and fires shots while he’s on the move and sometimes stops to trade. De La Hoya against Trinidad literally ran but i mean ran like jogging backwards for the last 3 rounds against Tito.

  • john says:

so now what for segura?..omar nino? that would be a good one

  • john says:

nobody had ever fought that smart against calderon, segura cut off the ring very well and went to the body a lot, lots of pressure, calderon was never used to getting hit like that and decided to quit instead of trying to win, which he had no chance anymore, those shots by segura just broke him down

  • solo says:

funny how when calderon runs around they call it boxing-yet when de la hoya did it against trinidad it was running.

Congratulations to Giovani Segura, all of his fans and Mexico. Farewell, and the best of luck to Calderon. He brought honor to Puerto Rico while he was champion. The Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry is unmatched and great for boxing!

  • Cruz says:

I meant to stay undefeated til last night.

  • superyoJC says:

EVERYBODY LISTEN, FINALLY JUSTICE IS BEEN MADE, CALDERON LOST AT LEAST 4-5 FIGHTS BEFORE, ONE OF THEM, WAS INCREDIBLY CLEAR, BUT FINALLY BY TKO HE IS WHERE HE DESERVES, ON THE CANVAS. HONOR TO WHO DESERVES THAT HONOR AND DISGRACCE FOR THOSE WHO ARE JUST ALWAYS FAVORITE BY INTEREST .

  • Cruz says:

I did not like the way Calderon went out because he literally quit. Making Puertoricans look bad for quiting. Mexicans can brag about how Calderon quit but ive seen plenty of Mexicans go out in their stool and quiting also. In every rase hispanic, white american, african american, etc… there are some men that are not tough and quit. In every rase there are men with strong warrior like hearts that dont quit. I respect Cotto for taking the beatin he took with bricks and fighting on until the ref had to step in and save him.

    @ ivlan

No one is going to give credit to Juanna for fighting a shot fighter instead of a prime Yuriokis Gamboa. Tell Juanna to stop being a coward.

  • elbeto says:

This Fight was Intense! Respect to Puerto Rico! Ivan has Heart! I hope to see a Rematch in Mexico !

  • ivlan says:

Please, please, please, I hope all you mexican loosers will
talk the same way when COTTO knocks the hell out of little
jr.. or when JUANMA knocks the hell out of marquez…I”LL BE BACK…

  • mko says:

Congratulations to the new linear champion and now the man to beat at flyweight the key to his victory were the vicious body punches and the non stop pressure not the head shots those were set up by the body shots anyway u made us very proud

  • jayaboy says:

yeah it was a great fight! i thougt rodel mayol is vindicated

  • Tijuas says:

That’s the only way you beat a puerto rican in Puerto Rico by knockout.
Calderon had 4 thing’s that favor him by figthing in Puerto Rico.

    1.HOME TOWN.
    2.PUERTO RICAN JUDGES.
    3.PUERTO RICAN REFERI.
4.BIG RING 24/24 SO CALDERON CAN RAN AROUND.
I’m glad segura put alot of presure and those body shots broke him down.

i cant believe the ref. did not take a point from calderon for excessive holding-if it wasnt for segura chasing him there would not be a fight.
