Roach may have Pacquiao try to overwhelm Margarito with punches

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach may have tipped his hand by giving a big hint about what Manny Pacquiao will do in his next fight with Antonio Margarito by saying “Manny will start fast with this guy, and we will finish him fast,” in an interview with the Telegraph.co.uk. In other words, Roach is going to have Pacquiao bum rush Margarito like he did Joshua Clottey, stand in front of him and try to overwhelm him with over 100 punches per round. It didn’t work against Clottey, though, because he blocked most of Pacquiao’s shots and the ones that got through had no effect on him.
He may not be the fastest of fighters, but he hits harder and actually aims his shots when he’s focusing on high volume punching. My guess is Roach thinks that Pacquiao will be able to duplicate what Shane Mosley did in his fight with Margarito, and that’s why Roach is talking about Pacquiao starting off fast and finishing fast. He must think that Pacquiao can overwhelm Margarito with a massive amount of shots. I don’t think it’s going to work.
Mosley didn’t just stand in front of Margarito trying to gun him down with ton of punches. What Mosley did was attack in brief two and three punch spurts. In between those brief bursts, he did a lot of clinching to keep Margarito from being able to throw punches. When he wasn’t clinching, Mosley was moving around on the outside. I don’t think Pacquiao will do any clinching with Margarito, because that’s not part of Pacquiao’s game. Even if Roach tried to train Pacquiao to smother Margarito with clinching, I don’t think he would follow that game plan.
The only way that Pacquiao can beat Margarito is to go toe-to-toe with him, and if he does try and throw a massive of punches like he did against Clottey, I think Margarito is going to beat Pacquiao up and stop him. We already saw what Clottey was able to do to Pacquiao in just throwing 15 to 20 punches per round. Can you imagine Margarito, a bigger puncher than Clottey, throwing 5 X that many per round? Pacquiao will get riddled to pieces. Roach better hope that Pacquiao can get Margarito out of there as fast as possible, because there may not be anything left of him if this bout goes 10 rounds or more.

I am a Pacquiao fan (but not a Pactard). I do not think Margarito is a push-over boxer. He might have done something bad in the past, but that does not negate his boxing prowess nor lessen it to any degree.
All that’s left for Pac to do is kill a man. That would propel his status into the stratosphere. If Arum supports Manny, why wouldn’t he support Margo? They are both cheaters in the eyes of the public. You best believe that Manny is going to destroy Rito. This will be a long grueling and brutal beatdown. Manny will have make history. Rito will pay his bills. Then Floyd will appear and it will be all for naught. So much unessesary drama.

How long have you been a “fan” of boxing? What you just stated makes zero sense when talking of a sport consisting of fighting and having necessary rematches, especially when one fighter is busted for using plaster in a fight(s).
When fighters don’t arguably beat each other sometimes people expect rematches. When incidents like being busted for having plaster in your gloves, calls for rematches when certain victories might have been because of the plaster.
Questions like these could be answered with rematches don’t you think?
You want to talk about refreshing, well how about Pac vs Mosley, Berto, Martinez, or at least Bradley and Alexander. You can’t justify Pac fighting Margarito. WAY too many deserving fighters out there that have a license to actually fight! We expect the best to fight the best. The congressman is not doing that. We expect more from him. Fighting Margarito brings discredit upon Pac and boxing in general. This can’t be tolerated. I think PPV #’s will reflect.

No it wouldn’t. If Margarito beat Cotto again it would be redemption on his part. If Cotto wins it would like you said show that either Margarito got old, cotto got better or Margarito used Plaster in there last fight. It would be a GREAT win for both.
And PLEASE, Floyd would technical break down and DESTROY Margarito. Margarito is nothing more than a glorified Baldo. Even worse now since losing his plaster/power.

If Pac can’t KO Margarito (in which I think he does inside 10 rounds) it will make all the more sweet of a punch that landed on Mayweather when Mosley landed those two bombs on Mayweather and all we got was a smile from Floyd and a bunch of haters about to say “see I told you so” but stopped half way when they realized it didn’t faze Floyd for one second.
If Pac can’t KO Margarito that would tell me that Mosley hits harder and we know Mayweather has always still has a solid chin. But like I said, Pac destroys Margarito inside 10 rounds. Without his plaster/power, he can’t do anything.
This is why I wanted to see Margarito vs Cotto II. That fight could answer a lot of questions IMO even though Cotto isn’t the same after being destroyed pretty much back to back. I still would pay to see that fight.

Almost no fight is a walk in the park and nothing is certain in life, especially not in boxing. Taking Margarito lightly would be the biggest mistake Manny could make. If this is the matchup we are stuck with I´ll make the most of it but I´m not going to make outrageous opinions like the rest of the posters on this site. I come to this site for some unbiased, somewhat intelligent conversation, not emotional rants.

The reason PACs punches were less than acurate is becuase he was tuanting clotty by opening himself in a non-commital way to promt clottey to open and then power counter him. In this straegy you dont loose energy (Because we know Clottey was waiting for that) & you create the sense of being overwhelmed. This leads your opponet to get frusteradted/desperate and make a mistake in opening up, or clam up and shut down.
Please tell me actually watch these fights, and have watched enough to know what your seeing.

Dude, Pac stood right in front of him to force Clottey to open up. If Pac kept moving in and out non stop pot shotting it would have been a real snooze fest. Clottey just turtle shelled the whole fight. Margo is NOT Clottey. Take a look at Pac/ODLH, that’s more or less what Manny’s gonna do to Margacheato. Tony’s gonna be a lot more competitive, this fights gonna be good, but speed kills. Pac will win by TKO in later rounds.
i watched the fight btween pac and clotey and the very few times that clottey hit pac it looked as if pac eyes were about to cry so cw is right clottey 20 punches per round and 100 by margo isnt gonna be the same fight….i think that pac is gonna pull out of this fight claiming some kind of injury…bet on that

Did you see Margo’s last fight? Poor showing. Margo’s no bum man, I give him credit, damn good fighter, but Pac annihilated Cotto. The same Cotto that was whoopn’ on Margo in the earlier rounds, but suspiciously got hit w/harder shots (literally) in the later rounds. No wraps for Cheeto = this fight being a wrap.
