Froch-Abraham: Can Carl change his fighting style enough to avoid getting knocked out on October 2nd?

By Scott Gilfoid: I can’t say I like Carl Froch’s chances going into his next Super Six tournament fight against Arthur Abraham on October 2nd at the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, Principauté de Monaco, Monaco. Out of all the opponents that I’ve seen fight Abraham in the past, Froch seems to be the most perfectly suited victim of all the ones I’ve seen. The fighter that comes closest to be the perfect opponent for Abraham, besides Froch, was Edison Miranda. Abraham destroyed Miranda in a 4th round knockout in their rematch in June 2008. In their first fight, Abraham had to deal with a broken jaw that he suffered early in the fight and this got in the way of him being able to fight at his best.

However, I seriously doubt that Abraham will be suffering any injuries against Froch on October 2nd, and therefore I think Froch is going to be in for some serious hurting unless he changes his fighting style dramatically by the time they step in the ring on the 2nd of October. Froch says he’s been studying the blueprint made by American Andre Dirrell in his win over Abraham last March. Dirrell dominated Abraham for 10 rounds, and the 11th, Abraham leveled Dirrell after he had slipped and fell on the canvas. While down, Dirrell was hit with a big right hand from Abraham and knocked unconscious momentarily.

The punch led to Abraham being disqualified and Dirrell given the win. But as far as Froch goes, unless he’s really good at mimicking the fighting style of Dirrell, I think Froch is going to get knocked flat by Abraham in this fight. Froch prides himself by his ability to mix it up with his opponent, to take their best shots and fire back his own power shots. Up until Froch began taking on better opponents recently, Froch was usually able to easily beat his European counterparts.

However, Froch has been struggling since last year in his fights with Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. Froch won the Taylor fight with a knockout in the last seconds of the 12th round, and would have lost had he not stopped Taylor. And in the Dirrell fight, Froch appeared to lose the fight, but was given the decision by the judges while fighting in front of a home crowd in Nottingham, England. In Froch’s next fight in the Super Six tournament, he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler by a 12 round unanimous decision and ended up losing his World Boxing Council super middleweight title in the fight.

Froch wants to avenge the defeat to Kessler and also wants to recapture his WBC title. However, the chances of that happening will disappear in an instant if Abraham is able to beat Froch come October 2nd. Froch can’t afford to lose this fight if he wants to make it to the next round of the Super Six tournament. But with Abraham’s big power, and Froch’s tendency to use his head as a third glove, I just don’t like Froch’s chances of making it to the semifinals of the Super Six tournament. I really don’t think Froch is going to be able to change his fighting style. I think he may be able to somewhat imitate Dirrell for about 20 to 30 seconds of the 1st round, but after that I see Froch slipping back into his normal style of fighting, dropping his gloves, standing straight up in a typical European fighting stance and leading with his lantern jaw. Abraham, seeing Froch’s head unprotected, is going to promptly knock him.

if froch adopted a klitscko style he could beat anyone

  • stu says:

so wait…a guy who has never been knocked out or stopped…& only been down once…needs to “change his style to avoid getting knocked out” by a former 160 champ who hasn’t looked great at 168?

    right. great logical thinking.

  • mark says:

gotta be stupid if you think Abraham will win by KO

has anyone else thought since moving to super middleweight Abraham has looked VERY slow ? Taylor isnt known for his amazing speed but was beating Abraham to the punch throughout the first 4 rounds … infact im not sure abraham threw a punch

against Dirrel he hardly threw a punch all night !!!!

Abraham is too stocky, the weight he has put on has added power but he has lost loads of speed

Froch will win on points, win the first 4 rounds and the last 3 clearly

  • PATPUMP says:

Great fight…..two very rough guys, too hard to pick a winner….50/50

few minutes ago i read a new Interview with AA. He says he will start fast from the first round on cause he learned alot from the Dirrel fight. Hope he will have the stamina for that. I have a bad feeling about changing his work rate cause it will effect his punching power in the later rounds.

Froch’s chances are better then he’s getting credit for, Abraham is tailor-made. Yes Froch was outboxed by Taylor and Dirrell and Kessler. Yes they showed themselves to have far superior boxing skills to the Nottingham man.
But … what happened they they decided to to land some power shots and trade with the cobra ?
Well … Taylor got Knocked out, badly. Durell got rocked and wobbled bad enough to let the fight slip and look like he didn’t even want to be there and even Kessler came off second best in the heavy exchanges more often than not allowing Froch to make the fight a very close affair !
Abraham is expecting to steam roll Froch but Carl has a granite chin and a warrior’s heart. We know he can stand up to this sort of a war, hows Arthur going to deal ?

  • SME says:

No, he won’t be able to take Abrahams best shots. Not for long. I’d say he can take 3, 4 of them over a couple of rounds, then his ability to take big shots will deteriorate over another 3 rounds and that will be his end.

Frochs only chance is to make it a pure boxing game, not taking any chances, and not “mixing it up”. If he does so, it will show it’s wishful thinking to be able to a) take Abrahams shots, and b) impress him with his own.

  • john says:

    froch by late KO

he will be able to take AA’s best shots but is the opposite true??

if AA starts as slow as usual carl will have hurt him seevral times by the later stages and his awesome stamina will show through with a ko between 10 – 12.

whilst a agree he aint a great technical fighter he has what it takes to win against anyone. he gets better the longer a fight goes on, has power, a great chin and most importantly of all he is a warrior

the kesslar loss was a great fight between two great champions, i loved every minute of it and i am looking forward to seeing carl bounce back

I can’t believe you are still trying to write articles gilifoild. I am off to the british home office, you are inciting racial hatred.

I Have just come back from my meeting with Jack Straw and heres what he had to say “if gilifoid ever steps foot in GREAT BRITAIN he is to be detained and share a cell with abu hamza. Mr hamza has a history of giving his sleeping cell mates a good old rogering with his hook”

Hes gonna love your big fat arse

  • glenn says:

froch by ko mark my words

  • tuv says:

how can he pick through abrahms befence, its solid. froch is niether explosive or punches in bunches fighter. abraham will take what pitiful attack froch gives then blast him to the floor.

people have forgotten the froch has nearley lost befor anyway, ha ain that great.

  • Manong Ilocano Oscar says:

Froch just have to stop whinning and concentrate on improving his defense. Otherwise, he will be KOd for the rest of his boxing career!

  • dan p says:

Can Abraham change his style enough to not get koed by Froch?
Cmon scotty boy sort it out!

  • tuv says:

froch will never change hid dtyle, wich is unfortunte. one of the hardest hitting p4p boxers (abraham) will not have a hard time finding frochs face. jermane taylor who has a good chis didnt last long, its doubtfull that froch will fare much better.

  • Bern says:

Does anybody know of an unbias boxing forum that doesn’t try to indoctronate its users?

  • Mark says:

well here is something to think about … Abraham starts very slow … he lost the first 4 to Taylor, then did the same against dirrel

froch starts fast and ends fast, i expect Abraham will be well behind in the points by round 5 were he starts attacking, but froch will get his 2nd wind at 9 or 10, i see a points victory for froch

huge negative articles against the british boxer on this website, maybe because of lack of interest in the all USA bout ?

  • Coach says:

I spoke with Virgil hunter Andre wards trainer and how did he see this fight playing out. Hunter feels that Abraham could be struggling with the loss of his #1asset his invincibility and he can no longer afford to hide behind his pre-dirrell style.hunter feels that once your code has been broken you must show the ability to adapt. Hunter feels that when froch says he is going to follow dirrells blueprint froch will not try to duplicate dirrell physically but instead duplicate dirrells mental approach to the fight. Dirrell believed that Abraham dismissed him as a threat and when Arthur realized the kid was indeed real other than chase dirrell around the ring desperately he showed little in the way of improvising.now once again hunter says here comes everyone not giving froch a chance and if Arthur is of the same mindset against froch as he was vs. Dirrell he is asking For it. Froch throws a lot more punches, and most likely will not tire.hunter is convinced that froch will hurt Abraham early in the fight not out of his power but out of his awkwardness and bumbling tendencies. He feels that what others are perceiving as weakness in froch is actually an advantage going against Abraham. Let’s not forget that Kessler also downplayed frochs ability and it not put him in a dog fight but it almost cost him dearly. Froch hunter says poses more danger to abraham than the other way around.

  • Mel Gibson says:

I really believe in my heart that Carl Froch is going to win this fight. He hits like a mule and Abraham is wat too inactive. We will see, but I am looking forward to this war

  • Shut up Meg says:

Though hes easy to hit and slow i think Froch will find more success in the way he fights against AA than anybody since he faced Pascal. He has been outboxed by better slick or discaplined boxers in Taylor, Dirrell and Kessler.

Abraham is certainly not slick or speedy, but hes certainly heavy handed and its a good job Froch can take a punch cuz for any success he gets Abrahams guna get plenty too.

This will be a brilliant fight for all fight fans other than the few snobs on here who think if you aint a slick African American your nothing and only 12 rounds of prancing dancing and one twos is entertainment.

Ohh and BRO, your a dikk

  • bro says:

froch is another british fighter who had built a nice record in his country without fighting real fighters same as hatton and calzache. he just made the mistake of starting to fight real contenders like hatton did. we all saw what happened to hatton and we are seeing the same happen to froch. we will also see the same happen to khan. unlike calzache who never fought anyone i give froch ,hatton and khan for saying f. what people think i should do, and went against the best to see where they stood.

  • modus says:

Froch is done for, he’s too hot headed, and will try to out punch AA, I think he’s in for a serious KO in the late rounds.
