Dawson says it’s funny how the referee jumped in to stop the fight after he hurt Pascal

By Eric Thomas: After losing to WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal last Saturday night by an 11 round technical decision, Chad Dawson was angry at the press conference after the fight, complaining about being head butted at least five times, and talking about the holding and hitting by Pascal, his “Running like a chicken” and also Dawson was upset at the Canadian referee for stopping the fight just when he had Pascal hurt in the 11th round. The referee didn’t technically stop the fight, but he did stop the action after the head butt in the 11th and it was the referee’s idea to march Dawson over to the ringside doctor for him to examine the cut.

It was then that the doctor quickly stopped the bout, not even giving Dawson a chance to finish the round and not giving Dawson’s team an opportunity to try and stop the cut. Moments after the fight, the cut had completely stopped bleeding with a small amount of ointment that was put on it and that makes you feel sorry for Dawson because he should have been given the opportunity to finish the round and then have his team work on the cut. I’ve seen much worse cuts before and I’ve never seen a doctor pull the plug on a fight as fast as last Saturday night.

This is what Dawson had to say about the fight at the post fight press conference: “He [Pascal] head butted me five or six times. It was funny when the referee jumped in and stopped the fight when I had him [Pascal] out on his feet. He knows it. I caught him with an uppercut. It’s funny that he jumped in and stopped it immediately. We have a rematch clause and I will be back for the title. Pascal said I would run around like a chicken, but he was the one that who ran around like a chicken. But I ended up chasing him around the ring all night. I knew he would to protect his little lead, and as soon as he would score a punch, he’d run but who’s the chicken? I’m the one pressing the fight all day. I got knots all over my face from head butts. He hit me in the head at least five times with really hard head butts and the referee just ignored it. Enjoy your victory and enjoy holding onto your title for a little while you got it because I’m coming after you to get it.”

You can say that again. I totally agree with everything that Dawson said. Pascal ran after he would land a shot, and looked out on his feet in the 11th just before he clashed heads with Dawson.

That bum Dawson cost me alot of money in this fight, I only picked the guy after watching Carl Froch beat Pascal comfortably, F*ck you BAD CHAD DAWSON.

  • Danny Boy says:

Pascal won fair and square… Dawson sounds bitter… what did he want Pascal to do? Hit him and then stand there like a fool and take one back?! Dawson, face it, you were out boxed… you fought someone less than 40 years old and got beat up…

  • crazy says:

This fight was like watching the Paul Williams/ Carlos Quintano’s first fight. We all know what happened in the rematch, this may very well have the same outcome.

  • j. jackson says:

my fellow americans…dawson lost, he wasnt necessarily on the verge of a ko win and that was a bad cut that would obscure his vision…it was proper to stop the bout at that point…

I have a strong feeling this is going to be one of those rematches where the last fights winner gets knocked out in 1 or 2 rounds,no hate on pascal but he just doesn’t seem like he’s on that level, Dawson might just KO him early next time around”

lol…feather fisted chad getting an early ko against pascal…a guy who has never been down in his career & fought half a fight with a torn rotator cuff. tbh if dawson chases pascal early looking for a ko he’s the one who will be knocked out.

  • tom britt says:

If its funny why isnt he laughing?H e wasnt cut bad enough to stop the fight.Chad said he wont have that ref again.Chad better pick the ref and the doctor .Most important the judges and location. And even then you better KO him.

  • kojo hardcore boxing fan says:

Sick.of the english fans sayin calzaghe was the best of his era.anyone who knows sh*t about boxing.knows manny paquaio was the best of the 00s.and roy jones jr was best of the 90′s.a prime roy jones jr would have destoyed joe calzaghe.joe fought a shell of jones.no match for super roy.note love the english fans.

  • PUNCH OUT says:

Sad Chad should stop making excuses and take a look in the mirror, he’ll see then why he lost!

    snif snif….mouaaaa
aint BAD chad…It’s Boring chad or Moaning chad.

  • R J Hill says:

Chad dawson needs to evaluate his excuses,It is most all his own fault he lost and he should take responsability for it.Pascal did not pose for chad to take his picture he stayed mobile and worked off his own timing, where chad was at ahhh.ahhh well what to do?I cannot believe the ref stopped it.I lost. Is all Dawson had to do was go aggressively after him instead of waitng for him to settle down.

  • Andy says:

I agree with pascals post fight coments you win like a champion and lose like a champion Dawson should think about that pascal was the better guy on the night show some respect. Pascal ain’t the greatest fighter ever but he’s game and has alot of heart while holding himself well in an out of the ring I’m pleased for him coming back from a defeat to froch improving a little bit here an there to beat a top undefeated fighter like Dawson.

  • anguis mcspollan says:

so many people said dawson would have beaten calzaghe now we know thats not the case. there is nothing to wonder about anymore . joe calzaghe was the best of his era there was know one on earth that could beat him not hopkins not jones not kessler not eubanks or lacy and not any of the fighters that never got the chance like pavlik and dawson. and he wasnt american i bet that really p****s some americans off im just waiting for someone to say yes but not a prime roy jones .yes even a prime roy jones would have got beat you know the one that was a junkie drug taking cheater. calzaghe was the greatest boxer of all time so get it right up yuz

  • soft little cory says:

may4u im not being funny but are you in love with mayweather. every article i read you have written something short and sweet about him

  • richard daish says:

i dont think it has anything to do with chad not having the killer instinct. he probably didnt try to finish the job because he knew he couldnt. pascal proved he had a great chin when he fought froch . that was a great fight both fighters threw everything but the kitchen sink into the mix fantastic.

  • May4u says:

Chat Dawson sucks. Mayweather is the best athlete ever!

  • Shut up Meg says:

I have to agree with Chad on this one.

I also found it funny when the ref jumped in cuz i knew that that meant Chad had just lost to the better fighter.

  • kojo hardcore boxing fan says:

I meant it was a bad cut and countered by the faster handed pascal.

  • kojo hardcore boxing fan says:

Come on.many like you.are makin excuses chad wasn’t busy enough.in the earlier and middle rounds.bottom line many underestimated jean pascal.chad was confused by the unorthodox style/speed and movement of pascal.and the only reason pascal was hit the way he did was pascal’s.backing into the ropes.and many say the headbutt.prevent chad from knocking pascal out in the rounds 11 and 12.cryin over spilled.but it was a bad.was accidental in my opinion.could have let chad go on.and knocked pascal out.pascal could have knocked chad out.or decision pascal.we will never know.just one question how many times could jean have knocked out chad.I counted three or four.can’t forget that beautiful counter straight right that had chad immediatly holding.many say rematch and have chad winning convincly.but in the books in rematchs many times the winner wins even more convincely not.encluding jones/griffin 2.in which jones dominated fight 1.chad throws combiinations in the middle of the ring he will get countered by the fater handed pascal.

  • RMC says:

Firstly when did the writer of this article become a doctor? Its the ringside doctors duty to ensure the fighters receive the best possible care and attention. He made the decision to stop the fight based on the severity of the cut (CAUSED BY AN ACCIDENTAL CLASH OF HEADS) and in turn could have prolonged Dawson’s career so he can live to fight another day.

Secondly when was Dawson ever pressing the fight? Because in the eyes of the vast majority of sane boxing fans, writers alike and most importantly the judges Pascal was well ahead on points.

Problem is Dawson and his camp took Pascal for granted, Dawson found himself in front of a live opponent and did not know how to cope with him, could not rely on his jab alone and was simply not aggressive enough. When questioned after the fight had ended as to why he he did not press the fight, he simply made excuses and refused to learn from HIS mistakes.

Dawson is the better boxer of the two technically, but on the night Pascal was the better man and deserves all the credit and accolades that will come.

Eric Thomas as a supposed fan of the sport writing an article like this effectively show’s you have very little respect for it, regardless of how you perceive either of the two fighters in question.

  • King For a Day says:

Chad finally woke up and then got a head butt, he said he was going to dominate this cat but waited for him to stand still and started getting tired before he started landing. so much for being cautious.

  • Terry says:

It’s real easy to say what you WOULD have done or was ABOUT to do. We’ll never know. Pascal was winning the fight by several rounds..the cut was completely accidental..it’s absolutely normal for the referee to let the doctor look at a cut that’s spewing blood like a water fountain!..If Dawson, who I’ve always thought was over-rated, was gonna knock Pascal out he should have tried to do it before Pascal had won almost every round..also..I don’t remember one time that Dawson even suggested during the fight that he was butted until the eleventh round..SORE LOSER !!!

  • Pale the Pug says:

Stop crying Chad, if you faught how you did in the 11th through the entire fight then he would have won. No excuses you lost, even though he had Pascal rocked in the 11th.

  • bunion says:

Why can’t anyone loose with dignity????

He was behind on points at the point the fight was stopped, he lost.

The headbutts were irrevalant if they actually happend because he had not done enough.

Put your dummy back in to keep that mouth shut and just fight and prove that you should have won!!

  • Cbee1 says:

The fight that I sawhad Dawson getting hit with hard shots and then not wanting to throw back.IMHO,Chad lost that fight because he was scared of being KO’ED!

Cotto had a way bigger cut when he fought Clottey and never once complained. If you do want to get cut,DONT FIGHT!

And when a lefty fights a righty, you usually get stepping on eachothers toes and headbutts!

  • R J Hill says:

The ref had the Dr. look at it as he made the decision to stop it.It was bleeding pretty good but it likely would not have made a difference in the outcome,Had he let it go on.

  • Boxingfan says:

Oops! My typing finger slipped. I meant, Dawson CAN’T win merely by blocking punches, dancing and eating up the clock. Apparently, he didn’t figure that out and his corner was afraid to tell him. In the Larry Merchant interview after the fight Dawson said something to the effect, “That’s my style, that’s how I fight.”

Well, you had better go back to the drawing board and come up with something better, especially if you are going to fight in someone else’s backyard in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

  • Boxingfan says:

Boxtolive is right on the money!

“Dawson did not lose because pascal is a great fighter(he is mediocre at his best). He lost because he lacks the one thing great fighters have: the killer instinct. Chad Dawson fought like he was waiting for a sniper to take out Pascal for him. He gave he fight away because he allowed pascal to win round after round with no sense of urgency until it was too late.”

Where was Dawson’s corner? Instead of encouraging him Dawson should have been told he was losing the fight and needed a KO to win. Dawson apparently doesn’t know that he can win a fight in a hostile jurisdiction by blocking punches and dancing minutes away. I thought Dawson would win, but he was played like a cheap fiddle by an inferior fighter. Dawson has no heart! He let his opponent off the hook several times. He likes to dance and block punches but winning a fight in Montreal requires DESIRE and Dawson showed the world he lacks desire and fire in his belly. Too bad he was cut in the 11th but he had many opportunities to win the fight before that happened. He’s a third class fighter in my opinion.

  • Chase-Dallas says:

Lol @ Mike getting nationalistic. The USA dumps all over (insert your country here) and anything you have to say about the land of the FREE and home of the BRAVE is purely out of ignorance. Leave this website for boxing talk. Putz.

  • stu says:

the ref didn’t stop the fight. the ringside doc did. & if dawson wanted to box on so badly he shouldn’t have stopped boxing & pointed to the cut. i always said he was an over-rated hypejob…but now i think he’s an over-rated whiny hypejob with no heart.

  • Shut up Meg says:

All very controversial, my honest opinion is that the cut was bad enough to stop the fight, Doctors dont care about scores, whose on top at the time or anything they are there to provide care and attention and give a sensible and professional medical opinionin of the state of the 2 men in the ring.

And to be honest its easy to look into the future for hearsay to say this COULD of happened or that COULD of happened. But look at the 10 previous rounds that DID actually happen and in those 10 rounds Chad was losing the fight.

I was about to knock him out? yeah easy to say that you should of done it earlier.

  • Chase-Dallas says:

Chad lost up to that point, period. I was one who thought Pascal had no shot. I give him a lot of credit and have now changed my stance that Chad would give Calzaghe a run for his money. He would get outhustled badly by Joe. Not stopped but probably shut out on the cards. That being said, Chad was done dirty in Canada. Pascal did headbutt, and not only once, but it was not on purpose. The ref was looking for any reason to save Pascal while he was in danger and so was the doctor. The cut was nasty but the blood had not gotten in Chads eye and there was absolutely no swelling at all. I could concievably see where Chad could have gone on to stop or at least knock down Pascal in round 12 seeing as how Jean was exhausted and taking more shots, so Chad is not completely off base in my opinion.

  • Mike says:

Pascal’s not a good fighter? LOL
He beat your American fair and square!
Get over yourselves American’s,your NOT the best at anything like you think you are. Your patriotic nonsense is programmed into you to blind you from the truth, you are all slaves!

  • Benjamin James says:

Chad Dawson and Audley Harrison have so much in common.

  • Boxtolive says:

Dawson did not lose because pascal is a great fighter(he is mediocre at his best). He lost because he lacks the one thing great fighters have: the killer instinct. Chad Dawson fought like he was waiting for a sniper to take out Pascal for him. He gave he fight away because he allowed pascal to win round after round with no sense of urgency until it was too late.

  • Manny sucks says:

@boxbox;Chad’s eye was wide open and it stopped bleeding.During the post fight interview both of Dawson’s eyes were fine and there was very little swelling and zero bleeding. The fight was stopped to early and if allowed to continue I saw a draw if Chad won the 12 round.

  • Boxbox says:

Didn’t Dawson’s eye completely close up though?

If a boxer can’t see out of one eye then the fight is automatically stopped.

Also, why did the writer make a point of saying it was the referee’s idea to send Dawson to the doctor, when that’s the normal procedure if a cut warrants a doctor’s opinion?

Seems the writer is extremely biased/bitter or is just ignorant in the rules of boxing.

  • roadkill- Pacquiao need rehab says:

i was wrong. I stated boldly that dawson was going to beat pascal. I stand corrected.

  • Manny sucks says:

Pascal is a bum and Chad has himself to blame for the loss. The fight should have never went to the scorecards anyway.Dawson should have beat this clown down and left no room for era.Stop crying and the next time don’t fight down to your opponents skill level.

  • the Truth says:

@Bible of Boxing ………………………………………………………….I couldn’t agree more! He waited too long! Or was it really his strategy to wait for pascal to run out of gas before he starts bringing it? But he clearly lost on the cards. And it was a good call that the ref jumped in to consult with the ringside physician. It was a nasty cut in the worst place possible. But Dawson, I believe had a legit chance of KO’ing Pascal. The cut was really unfortunate. It could have gone the other way.

  • tomo says:

And to think people give Dawson a chance of beating Calzaghe. Laughable.

  • MadRhino says:

I hope that he gets Knocked Out in the rematch, to shut his whinning, sore looser’s big mouth.

  • ERIC says:

BOTTOM LINE CHAD YOU GOT BEAT. DONT BLAME THE REF. THAT WAS A LEGIT STOP WITH THE WAY THE EYE WAS CUT.PEOPLE LOSE RESPECT FOR YOU THE MORE YOU TALK. YOU SHOULD OF FOUGHT A LITTLE MORE. JUST THINK IF PASCALS ARMS WERE AS LONG AS YOURS, HE WOULD HAVE REALLY BEAT THE SH#T OUT OF YOU.HOW EVER I SEE YOU BEATING HIM IN A REMATCH.SO QUITE YOUR F##KING CRYING

  • bob says:

was dawson really pressing the fight? cause Pascal was ahead on the cards. as for running, don’t belittle boxers for it, it’s part of a strategy. Dawson’s a sore loser.

  • Joker C/east salas ca says:

Excuses excuses excuses…Dawson is a sore loser

  • Tso says:

He waited toooooooooooo looooooooong!!!!!!! and those are the results.

  • southpaw_07 says:

Interesting, can anyone direct as to when in the fight did the other headbutts occur?
And what is Dawson excuse for him holding on to dear life when Pascal had him hurt several times in the beginning up to the middle of the fight, Chad was holding and hugging Pascal who tried to finish him off at that time.

  • mrblack says:

as far as im concerned hes now lost to both pascal and johnson in the first fight.
