Bert Sugar sees Pacquiao vs. Margarito as a “B+” fight

By Dan Ambrose: Boxing writer Bert Sugar thinks the upcoming November 13th fight between Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao is a B+ fight, according to an article by writer Chris Robinson at Examiner.com. Sugar, who has written over 80 books about boxing and other sports, said this about the Pacquiao-Margarito fight: “It’s a B+ fight, not the A+ fight we were looking for which is still the most anticipated fight since Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard 30 years ago. But this is not chopped liver. This is a good fight.”
It’s more like a C fight if anything. Rather than matching Pacquiao against guys like Mosley, Andre Berto, Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez, all of whom I think would beat Margarito, Bob Arum has decided to match Pacquiao against one of his own fighters. I think Arum is two years late on this fight. Had it been back in 2008, it would have been a great fight but not now.
Margarito looks like someone completely different and he was taking punishment and running in his last fight against little known Roberto Garcia. That’s not a good sign for Margarito going into his fight against a much better fighter like Pacquiao. I’m sure Sugar knows a lot about boxing, but I think he’s dead wrong in calling this a B+ fight. If he had said it was a D+ fight, I think he would be a lot closer to reality than it being characterized as a B+ bout.
Margarito has had battles against Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey in the past, beating Cotto and Clottey, but he doesn’t look to be the same fighter he was back then. And even if he was, I’m still not sure he would be good enough to compete with Pacquiao. He was always really slow and wide his punches. Margarito was able to get away with this because he didn’t face much quicker fighters. Pacquiao will be a lot faster and will give him problems with his speed and movement. No, I don’t see this fight as a B+ fight. It’s closer to a D than a B.

@Anonymous margacheato knocked out martinezbefore the hand wraps scandle so that knockout means nothing. infact as far as im concened cheato has only had 2 fights and he’s record is currently 1-1. plus martinez was only one of the names mentioned. what about p willy (who destroyed cheato) berto or even mosley?
This should be a good fight and I’m looking forward to it. This is a fight Mayweather refused to take when Margarito was one of the top welterweights so I give Manny props for taking the fight. Styles make fight and just because Shane dominated Margarito does not mean Manny will do the same or will he? That’s what’s so great about boxing. Guys getting in the ring and mixing it up and not making a million excuses. 20 years from now we won’t have to wonder who would have won between Margarito and Manny because the fight was made with no excuses.
I think that margarito will be allowed to be anounced as the former champ,in lieu of the violations that shocked the boxing people that his fight was able to continue without the handwraps and he was obviously out of his game plan as he got what he will most likely get in this fight.
For Margarito fans,just give your man a break when he gets beaten.

Did Mayweather Sr. write this article ? Pacquiao should fight the 160lb fighters Martinez & Williams, or the then 39 years old Mosley ? The first two are out of his reach sizewise unless they starve themselves, and the latter will definetly neither provide a challenge nor “beat him”. You can put back the clock only so much, and in the lower weightclasses, not by much. Mosley had two rounds in him vs. Mayweather, and then was potshot to death by a slower than usual Jr. A faster version of the same potshotter in Pacquiao would run circles around Shane and give him an undeserved beating, courtesy of Shane not able to throw more than 5 punches a round after the bell rang for rd. 3.
What’s the difference between Margarito and Mayweather(May-Never)?
Margarito can fight more than one State after serving his due!
Mayweather can only fight in one State due to frequent usage of Xyloc@ine.

Why do guys like you keep on bringing Paul William’s name? That’s a very impossible fight. He’s 6’2″ my goodness!! No matter how great a fighter like Pacman is, there is a limit as to the max size of his opponent. He’s just 5’6&1/2″ for God’s sake!!!
This fight could be quite entertaining I reckon pacs big favourite for sure an I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t win but while it lasts margarito will keep coming forward swinging absorbing pacs shots for as long as that granite chin will let him. I can think of worse fights (dirrell ward)! Morals aside why not just embrace the fight margarito ain’t the first to cheat an won’t be the last he did his time that he was sentenced with.

Marg deserves better than Mosley! Marg were caught before using the plaster, defeated and suspended. Mosley Mayflower cheated and enjoyed the harvest and still you so called boxing expert still defend him.

Just a reminder that this is the same “boxing expert” that said JMM would be a tough fight for Mayweather. Post fight of course he stated that Mayweather cherry picks his opponents etc etc.
I wouldn’t doubt if post fight he falls back and says that Pac Margarito was a horrible fight with Margarito being of no threat to pac due to him having ring rust, too slow, no defense, no offense, no power/no plaster, no movement, looked horrible in his last and ONLY fight in two years, hasn’t fought at 154 but once in the last 6 years, etc etc etc. Who knows what he will say.
I will say it will be a nice punching bag session for Pac that wont go past 10 rounds. Margarito will give up or get knocked out. He doesn’t have the power to break down and punish his opponents anymore. Mosley’s trainer figured out that blueprint.
Margarito vs Joshua Clottey produced a record 1685 punches from Margarito…..which was a very impressive output.
Margarito vs Shane “the old man” Mosely saw Margarito produce only 485 punches thru 9 rounds before he was KO’ed.
Do the math people…….Margarito, just like Pac, threw a ton of punches against Clottey because he basically stood in front of them all night long. But against an older fighter who actually moved in and out of his range, Margarito offensive output was reduced to a whimper. If anyone thinks that Pac vs Marg. will produce 100 punches a round from both fighters, then they are delusional at best……and just plain stupid at worse.
I myself am disappointed to see Manny fight and reward a proven cheater Anotnio Margarito. Like the writer says, if this fight took place after the Cotto fight, it would be one hell of a slugfest! Two years too late Mr. Arum, please stop doing it for your own’s sake and do it for the boxing fans all over the world!
It will probably be the best fight we’ve seen manny in for a while, not saying it’s the fight I want but its certain to be competetive more so than his last 4 fights anyway.

i watched that roberto garcia fight on you-tube and i came to realize that margo showed to be somewhat elusive in dodging punches late in the fight… i know mosley had him hurt to where he had no choice but to go to the ropes but i feel he realized the ropes are a bad thing… from what i saw he just rolled off the ropes against roberto garcia which is a good sign that he corrected some errors he may have made in his last fight… yes he didnt have the pop he had in his previous fights but he still won his last fight and it looked like he had fun doing it too. theres a difference from pitty pat punches to score points and the punches you see that are thrown with conviction… and against pacman? punches will be thrown with conviction… will margo win? idk, i doubt it, but for sum reason i’ll be pulling for margo. “on his path to redemption” backlash here we go !
