Alexander gives himself a D- for Kotelnik bout and says he’ll be better for Bradley fight
By Jim Dower: As IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KO’s) likes to say, he’s his own worst critic. Alexander defeated former WBA junior middleweight champion Andriy Kotelnik last Saturday night in front of a home audience at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri, winning a 12 round unanimous decision by the judge’s scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. Alexander didn’t look good at all and should consider himself very lucky to have won the fight. Although there are a certain amount of boxing fans that feel that Alexander did more than enough to get the win, there seems to be an even larger amount that feel that he should have lost the fight.
Alexander, 23, vows not to make the same mistakes that he did in the Kotelnik fight. In an article at Boxingtalk.com, Alexander says “It was a D- performance from me the other night and just know that you won’t see another performance like that from me again. Now bring on [Timothy] Bradley.” Alexander is going to have to do a lot of improving if he wants to avoid the same mistakes in his fight proposed fight with Bradley in January 2011.
Besides missing all night long with his jabs, Alexander showed zero power in the Kotelnik fight and you to wonder how Alexander was able to take out 13 of his opponents during his still young career. He threw with decent speed but the power wasn’t there and a lot of the shots seemed little more than arm punches. That won’t get the job done against a fighter like Bradley, who is both faster and a lot sharper with his punches. Alexander might want to take a tune-up before going up against Bradley, because there’s a number of things that Alexander needs to change with his game before he takes on someone as good as Bradley.
Right now, I would give Alexander no chance of beating a fighter like Bradley, and I also think other top light welterweights would beat him. Alexander would have problems against WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana and Victor Ortiz. Those fighters all punch very hard and would give Alexander all kinds of problems. Of course, if the fight took place in Saint Louis, in think Alexander would have a good chance of beating all of them if he doesn’t get knocked out.

Yep – another BS decision. They give them for hitting opponents gloves and screming (uha-uha-ha)
We doubt he can beat Bradley now.We just dont know now,I would favor whoever gets the knockdowns.
Alex Lost he got beat the judges gave him the fight Kotelnik did not have a chance for a decision to go his way. alex looked lie an averge little noisy boxer
Devon needs a new trainer. His natural ability will take him so far.
Gives himself a ‘D’? Should have given himself an ‘F’ cuz he damn sure lost this fight. He was doing ok until Kotelnik started landing with the hard precise blows. Then it seemed as if Alexander wasn’t so quick to jump into harm’s way and that’s why he was hitting air with his jabs the rest of the fight. The judging was similar to the way Lederman judged the early rounds of the Mayweather/Hatton fight. Hatton was busy hitting Maweather’s shoulders, arms, and elbows while Mayweather was landing the clean, hard, precise blows to Hatton’s head and body. Lederman gave the early rounds to Hatton but the real judges got it right and scored them for Mayweather.
I had Kotelnik winning by 8 rounds to 4, it was obvious that Dan Rapheal’s ego had been some what dented, having the cheek to reiterate his deluded belief, that Alexander had won the fight (in brackets no less).
As for HBO’s “poor old Harold”, he should just be put out to pasture, as the man’s faculties just aren’t there anymore, 9 rounds to three in favour of Alexander, “nurse, the patient needs his medication please”. LOL!
f-l-a we dont play .you are entitled to your opinion, but you dont seem to be able to grasp the reality of life.why are alexander fans even saying kotelnik won.imagine how andriy feels? 3 bad decisions and he has’nt given up heart and you call him a bad boxer.if thats the case what does that make devon.rsvp?????
bradley is the best light welter out there i know for sure he is hes the 1 to beat
I believe Kotelnik deserved a close decision, had him winning 7-5 rds. He landed all the solid shots and was blocking 90% of Alexander’s punches…which were mostly ineffective jabs. If Devon hadn’t thrown over 1,000 punches he definatly would’ve lost, even with it being at home…his work rate made it look much better than it was. Like Max Kellerman said though it’ll make setting up future fights easier now that guys like Bradley and Khan think he’s beatable. Styles make fights but I think right now Bradley is a little too aggressive and powerful for Devon. Khan would be an even fight because he fights a similar style but even his reach advantage might be too much for Devon…both match ups would be fun.
I agree with the comment about the left hook. That is the punch that could have closed the show for Alexander. Why couldn’t his corner see that. No fighter looks effective backing up an entire fight. Alexander should have at least kept the fight in the middle of the ring where he was most effective. Kotelnik is just a decent fighter which proves that Alexander’s trainor had no game plan except to try to out box a guy that you just needed to hit with the right punches more accurately. At this stage Alexander is not ready for any of the top tier 140 lb fighters including Maidana and his trainor needs to reassess his knowlege and skills as well.
Alexander was just plain boring, I don’t even remember him throwing a damn hook or upper cutt just a bunch of jabs and straights that 90% seemed too land on his opponents gloves. Overall I thought Alexander had a off night. All good boxers have a fight or 2 in their career where they look vulnerable (mayweather vs castillo). I agree Alexander should have a tune up fight before facing Bradley. He needs too develop a offensive game plan and incorporate more hooks and upper cutts too his attack. I thought alexanders timing was horrible, he threw too many punches that made him runn out of gas. Koltenik came too fight and Alexander showed up too sparr and won a fight beacuse of horrible judges. Overall I do think Alexander is better than koltenik and I do believe Alexander will perform better in his next fights.
Whatever…Alexander the fake
@???? Khan KOed Salita and TKOed Paulie at LWW, just goes to show what you know about boxing lol enough said!!!
Kotelnik won this fight based on skill, timing and accuracy.
Alexander had a great work rate, which along with speed, were the only good attributes he had. Unfortunately, he was so fast and busy that he didn’t watch where his fists were landing. Had he done so, he would of seen that they weren’t landing at all.
Hit without being hit is the name of the game and for most people, that makes Kotelnik the winner.
HAHAHA WHAT HAPPENED TO CHRIS WILLIAMS,DAVE LAHR AND JASON KIM THAT SWORE FOR THERE LIFE THAT ALEXANDER COULD GIVE PACMAN A HARD TIME WOULDNT EVEN LAST 1RD BEFORE GETTING HATTON
He messd up he didnt throw enough straight lefts all he did was jab and hook with his lead hand. Im starting to wonder if he really is left handed, becuase im suprise that a south paw didnt throw his left hand enough in the fight.. Still think he’ll do good against Bradley
Khan would UD him khan doesn’t have enough power to stop anyone at light welter enough said
BS decision…
