What happens if Margarito walks through Pacquiao’s shots and starts battering him?

By Dave Lahr: Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao may not have thought about this, but what happens if Antonio Margarito isn’t phased by Pacquiao’s shots, and just walks right through them and starts beating the tar out of Pacquiao at close range. What will Roach do? Worse than that; what will Pacquiao do to stop the Mexican tornado? Bob Arum is the one that wants the Margarito-Pacquiao fight, because he thinks it’s going to be a bout that will sell well to the boxing public. I kind of doubt it, but when you promote both of the fighters involved, you’re going to do really well even if it doesn’t bring in the monster numbers that a Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout would bring in.
Pacquiao has moved up a number of different weight classes in the past three years and now he’s moved up to junior middleweight. This is the big boys Pacquiao’s dealing with now, and even though he’s got a handicap working for him in the Margarito fight with the 150 pound catch weight, it may not be enough for Pacquiao to slow Margarito down. I can see things getting quickly out of hand if Margarito doesn’t respect Pacquiao’s power and walks right through them. Pacquiao would then be forced to take Margarito’s shots and he tends to throw a lot of punches. If Margarito is throwing 100 punches per round and Pacquiao is throwing just as many, I don’t like Pacquiao’s chances of being able to hold up under those kinds of shots.
I mean look at Pacquiao’s last fight against Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao was hit only 10 to 15 times per round from Clottey, which is a pretty anemic punch output if you ask me. Yet Pacquiao’s face looked like it had been run over by a tractor trailer by the end of the fight. This tells me that Pacquiao can dish it out just fine, but he’s having more and more problems taking the shots that are coming at him. Can you imagine what would have happened to Pacquiao if Clottey had thrown 100 punches per round? Pacquiao would have had to have been scraped of the canvas with a giant spatula and thrown on a stretcher like it was a big plate.
And Margarito hits even harder than Clottey. With Margarito’s high punch volume working for him in this fight, and with his good chin, I think Arum is going to be sad and gloomy by the end of the fight on November 13th, wishing he hadn’t put the bout together.

Im glad im not the only one thinkin this…people seem to forget that only a couple of years ago people were questioning pacs ability to take on margarito, now theyre acting as if its a done deal. This is not gonna be the walk in the park that evryone thinks it is…im finding it hard to believe that Arum has put this together because its so risky to his cash cow..unless its fixed, which wouldnt suprise me at all with arum..

Dave Lahr, your suppositions, hypothesis, what ifs, etc. will not happen. Pacquiao will be too fast and powerful with his punches and counter punches. The Mexican cheat is made to order to absorbe them. He is too slow and his chin will collapse within 7-9 rounds. Anyway, good try. Lahr. Your article is a smokescreen of your dislike of the Pacman. Dave you’ve got so many fight predictions wrong, it’s not funny. I thought you would have died of embarrassment already. Margarito can take a shot, up to a point. That point will come between the 7th and 10th round. He comes straight forward and he’s slow. Pacquiao will be in and out in his usual manner before Margarito has time to react. This is an easy fight to predict, like all the other fights you got wrong. As an unbiased boxing fan it always pains me to read your articles.

If Margarito walks through Pac’s punches, then he must be made out of steel. I don’t know where you get these ideas Dave but you really don’t seem to like Pacquiao do you?! Pac and Roach are professionals, this is what they do. If you were making tens of millions of dollars on something. How serious would you take it?! Just marinate on that for a moment. Seriously, marinate on that for a moment! Margacheato may have the drive and motivation to want to redeem himself, but without talent to compliment it – especially against a fighter with the caliber of Pacquiao – it won’t nearly be enough.
I’ve met both fighters through my father who is one of the directors of talent for Top Rank and I can tell you that they’re both good guys. The thing is Dave, this fight was made purely to satisfy Pac’s November date, and since Arum is a master at building up fights, it’s gonna make $$$.

@donkey- i used the same example u do use when u compare how Pac beat ODLH and Floyd struggled against ODLH only u pac fans are quick to say Floyd was overweight against JMM but u ignore the fact that ODLH was a dead man walking when he fought Pac.

I’d love Margarito to go to work on this southpaw pretender and I think there’s a good chance he will. Roach would never have taken this fight if he wasn’t pretty confident of a significant advantage which I think will be the catch-weight. For a guy of Margarito’s size that is a tough call. Roach thinks he’ll pull DLH 2, a guy so warn out by weightdrain that he can’t punch his weight. Hoepfully, Margarito can pull it off with more success. He is a tough tough guy – toe to toe with Paul Williams and almost won, knocked out Martinez and Cotto. Like my man says, Clottey made mince meat of Pacquiao’s face without getting hurt in their fight. If Margarito covers up well and punches in sharp bunches, he could hurt Pacquiao. I predict Pacquiao doing a lot of moving in this fight, hit and move, hit and move but if he runs out of steam, he’s in trouble because Cotto hit Maragrito with everything he had but couldn’t stop him. When Floyd asked for random tests Pac fans cried foul that Floyd is asking for something beyond the commission. The problem with Pac fans is u defend anything that Pac does no matter how bad it is. If Clottey were to throw 100 punches in a round…he would have been knock out in three rounds, that was why he kept his punches so he won’t be leaving himself open…just as he said that for every punch that he threw, Manny would fire back with a dozen…he knew he won’t last the distance had he fought heads up.. and yes, his punches were heavy because he is a natural middleweight just as Margarito is…and Manny is not even a natural welter but a lightwelter…to me Manny is at his best when fighting at lightwelter…his punches will be too much for anybody from this division…However, I agree that him fighting at 150 catchweight should not involve the title…

Margo’s shots aren’t going to do anything to Pacquiao. He won’t be wearing his bricks and have you seen Pac’s head? Seems like it grows each time he moves up a weight class. Marg will have a hard time doing anything effective. It’d be like hitting a huge bowling ball.
If Pacquiao gets beaten up by Margarito, that is just the way it is. Arum will get no more prize fighter and Pacquiao will probably stop fighting. There is no shame in this scenario. Pacquiao will fight anybody and not duck anybody. That is why a lot of people, not just Filipinos love this guy, even Mexicans. This is called pride and fighting the best there is. That is why he is chosen as the fighter of the decade and gets the respect of the boxing fans and pundits alike. Of course there will always be those who do not see this because of hate and for whatever reason and this writer is one of them.
