What are the odds that Pacquiao-Cotto II will be at a catch weight?

By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao will be satisfying his need to pick up and 8th world title when he easily destroys fellow Top Rank fighter Antonio Margarito on November 13th for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title.
After that fight, which boxing fans want to see, Pacquiao will either be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Miguel Cotto in a rematch.
I think this will turn Mayweather off towards a fight with Pacquiao and cause him to go in another direction rather than sign on for a 50-50 deal with a fighter that isn’t doing as well as him in PPV sales. Pacquiao will then fight Cotto again in a rematch that will probably be about as interesting to boxing fans as Pacquiao’s recent fight against Joshua Clottey.
How Arum will sell a second fight between Pacquiao and Cotto is anyone’s guess. I wonder, though, if Pacquiao will ask for another catch weight for a fight against Cotto. Pacquiao is going to be fighting Margarito at a 150 pound catch weight, which will be Pacquiao’s second catch weight bout in his last three fights.
As the new WBC junior champion, after having beaten Margarito for the vacant title, won’t that look kind of funny to be fighting Cotto at another catch weight? I mean, if you’re the so-called champion, shouldn’t catch weights be things of the past? I hope so. The last thing I want to see is Pacquiao fighting a unification bout at a catch weight of 150 or whatever weight he comes up with. God, I don’t want to see Pacquiao fighting yet another catch weight fight, especially if he’s the WBC champion.
The sanctioning bodies need to create some rules when it comes to fighters fighting at catch weights. I’m cool with it when it’s a non-title fight, but there’s too much room for abuse when you’re the champion and/or a really popular fighter that can get these things in fights to get an advantage over their opponent. It just doesn’t seem right, not for a title fight. I don’t know what to compare this with, because no other sport that I know of would allow catch weights or something similar.

The odds are probably 90%, if they fought at 154. Now, if they fought at 147, and there was a C/W involved, again, that ish would be criminal, and would make the draining allegations UNDENIABLY true.

Please name the drained opponents Manny has fought in his 50 fight career? It seems like anyone can come on these sites and make random/baseless claims and expect everyone else to believe what they are saying but the reality is far from that when you take 2 seconds and do a little investigating. Haters will always hate and do whatever they can to discredit who they are hating on, refusing to give credit for either Floyd or Manny´s accomplishments takes any credibility away from a realistic poster hoping to have a decent debate. Personally I don´t like Floyd but I can´t take his accomplishments away, he´s been on of the top fighters of the past 10 years and although his style is boring he wins fights in a dominant defensive fashion that has not been seen in boxing mayber ever. At the end of the day it´s x´s and o´s and both will go down as the greatest fighters of their eras.

Not to mention pac is fighting larger oponents at catch weights? Mayweather isnt fighting larger openent at all. In fact he fights smaller guys and brings them up the weight that are to large for them. If mayweather decidid to fight Sergio Martinez at a catch weight of laet sat 156,157 for the middle wieght tittle i wouldnt put him down for taking risks against a larger man just because he wanted one thing in his favor, Mayweather would be the much much larger draw and would be entitled to this especialy against a larger man. Same logic with pac at 147 and 154.

Is having cotto who regularly weighed in at 147 to weigh in at 145 or margarito who fight both at 147 and 154 to fight at 150 really less far to cotto and margarito than when mayweather brought Juan Manues Marquez up from 135 two weight classes to a CATCHWEIGHT of 144. Ignoring the fact that mayweather consequently broke the agreement and paid $600,000 to JMM so that may cound weigh in at 146. Ignoring that even if you can, Is it realy worse for pac to have Cotto And Cheato fight at a very small catch weight than what mayweather did to Marquez(a difference of 11 lbs for JMM compared to 2 with cotto and 3 or 4 depending on how you look at it since Cheato fights at both 154 and 147)?

Why blame Pacquiao for the catch weight? Blame the boxer who agreed to it! Suppose Mayweather demands to fight Pacquiao at a catch weight and Pacquiao agrees, then its Pacquiao’s fault for agreeing. if ever mosely/weather was a legit fight (not fixed), this is the first time mayweather experienced the feeling of losing. yes, he did got up and readjusted himself and caught up with mosely when he (shane) gassed out. good on floyd. but floyd knows pacquiao has more stamina and speed and in case, just in case one of pacquiao’s knock out punch slips thru, it could be the beginning of a very long fight (or short fight) for floyd. pacquiao has A LOT of stamina which is why some people suspect he is on peds.

Marquez who previously had never fought above 135lbs was going up 2 weight classes for that fight. Marquez is a P4P contender and this was a big money fight so a catchweight of 144 was a reasonable request, agreed upon by both parties. Marquez weighed in at 142 and FMJ weighed in at 146lbs. That’s a whole 2lbs more than the agreed weight! Not even close!! That suggests to me that he had no intention of making the catchweight and was happy just pay JMM off. FMJ was much closer to his natural and preferred weight of 147lbs, are you honestly telling me that there is no advantage in that??
Marquez has recently said that he thinks that FMJ could have been at least 15lbs heavier on the night. You can’t profess to know about boxing and then say that weight doesn’t matter. Of course it does. It affects you punch resistance and muscle-mass will affect how hard you hit. Floyd made sure he had as much of a physical advantage as possible.
I’m not saying that if the physical playing field had been even Marquez would have won, I still think FMJ would have outboxed him, but now we’ll never know for sure.
The point I was making was that FMJ abused the catchweight rules to his advantage. In essence he cheated. He has no honour and a warrior like Marquez deserved better. Certainly better than the pittance FMJ paid him in compensation for not making weight. A drop in the ocean compared to how much money Floyd got for that fight.

Personally, I’m hoping Margarito surprises us and knocks that steroid junkie out of his socks. If not, we’ll probably see Pacquiao v Cotto 8, return to the hasbeen zone. This will definitely be a catch weight because there’s no way Pacquiao is coming up to 154, no way on earth. Chris Williams, Are you sure 150 is an advantage for Manny? Probably, when he beat up Cotto the last time at 145, you could claim that that was an advantage. But Cotto could fight at 147 and above…150 is above 147..do the math. Manny is a small guy… you got to see that. Magarito could fight at 147 like cotto. So neither Cotto nor Margarito will be drain if they fight at 150. So how could you say catchweight at 150 is an advantage for manny? If he would fight klitzco brothers, well, yeah, its not right. But this two guy are good as they are at 150.

Forget the catch weights! Pacquiao should stay in his division and defend his title against someone! He is not the best! Cherry picking and Cheating is what he does… Margarito is the WBC Light Middle weight Champion but their not saying much about that because they want to move as quickly as they can and collect the money.

dude,as a former fighter, it truly brakes my hart to say it, but i dont think boxing has any credibility or anything else left to loose. as you say with managers and promoters bending the rules, taking advantage. boxers arnt real fighters anymore. how hard is it to get 2 top guys to fight each other these days. pac man / mayweather will never happen. go order the next ufc event. watch some real fighters that want to prove there the best, not just claim to be, but actually prove it
Catch weights are sure way to even the odds between two fighters. Pacquiao is very much smaller against cotto and margarito, and to even the playing fields catch weights are needed.

I absolutely 100% agree with this article. I am sick of Pacquaio/Arum bending the rules when they see fit. Pacquaio is a class fighter but he should not be deemed a welterweight world champion because he fought and won at 145 not 147. Im not saying Cotto would have definitely beaten Pacquiao but it would have been more of a contest if Arum didnt force Cotto to shed an extra 2lbs. Moreover, what sort of promoter is Arum in forcing Cotto and Margarito to fight at catch-weight? Personally I hope Mayweather will destroy Pacquaio when they meet so Arum can no longer destroy boxing’s sporting credibilty
