Ray Robinson vs. Shawn Porter tonight
Tonight, Star Boxing’s “The New” Ray Robinson (11-1, 4KO’s) will be looking to get back to his winning ways when he takes on highly regarded Shawn Porter (15-0, 12KO’s) at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi. Robinson-Porter is scheduled for eight rounds in the welterweight division, and will be shown live on Showtime’s Shobox: The New Generation.
Robinson and Porter are familiar with one another, having boxed on the same national team during the amateurs. Both fighters have exciting, fan friendly styles, and will be sure to put on a good show for those in attendance and those at home watching on T.V.
“I’m ready to go,” stated Robinson. “I know this isn’t an easy fight, but I am confident in my ability and confident that I will come out on top.” Robinson will be sporting a significant height and reach advantage against Porter, something that he recognizes and wants to use to his advantage.
“He is an aggressive fighter who likes to come forward and put a lot of pressure on you. I plan on offsetting some of the aggression and keeping him off balance, by using my jab and footwork.”
Keeping Porter off balance will be the key for Robinson to pull off the win. One of the knocks on Porter, who was a 2008 U.S. Olympic alternate, is that he likes bounce back and forth, and then must set himself to get off his punches. In his fight against Russell Jordan earlier this year, the rangy Jordan gave Porter some problems boxing and circling on the outside from his southpaw stance and just like Jordan, Robinson is a tall rangy southpaw.
Robinson vs. Porter is being presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Prize Fight Promotions. The telecast will go on the air on Showtime at 11PM ET.
