Pacquiao to fight Margarito at catch weight not above 150?

By Chris Williams: World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is going to get a chance to win his 8th world title when he faces two-time world champion Antonio Margarito on November 13th at a still to be determined venue. According to boxing news from the Inquirer.net, the 31-year-old Pacquiao will be fighting Margarito at a “catch weight not exceeding 150 pounds.” Well, let’s do the math. If the junior middleweight upper limit for the division is 154, then Pacquiao will be fighting at four pounds under the limit, and only three pounds above the 147 pound welterweight limit. I suppose that is a catch weight that meets around the midpoint between the welterweight and junior middleweight division.
Margarito is the bigger fighter at 5’11” compared to the 5’6” Pacquiao, so any catch weight that limits how high you can go will naturally hurt Margarito much more than Pacquiao. Margarito hasn’t looked like the same fighter he used to be in his past two fights, and I don’t see how a catch weight is really even needed to beat him. He’s slow as molasses, doesn’t use his long reach, has no defense, comes straight at his opponents, and throws wide shots in close. Margarito is the perfect victim for Pacquiao. So why would a catch weight be needed when you got a fighter that is so tailor made for Pacquiao, and who appears to be fading fast in terms of his fighting ability.
If anything, I think Margarito is the one that needs a huge handicap in this fight, not Pacquiao. They need to have something written in the contract where Pacquiao won’t jump all over Margarito until at least the 10th round, so that boxing fans can be assured to get their monies worth out of this fight and so that Margarito has at least a sliver of a chance of winning. But to have handicap that favors Pacquiao, when he already has everything going in his favor for this fight, just seems wrong. I feel sorry for Margarito. He’s got basically no chance in this fight, and the catch weight of 150 will make things even worse for him. If Bob Arum and Pacquiao want this to be an entertaining fight, they need to lose the idea of using a catch weight.

Pac will struggle to make 154 (he eats a burger before welterwieght weigh-ins) so asking for 150 for a margarito fight is understandable. whats the big deal about asking for a catchweight?

Pacquiao doesn’t need to get to 154 to fight for a 154 pound title. In my opinion though, he should have to BEAT a 154 pound fighter to win that title. How could either person contracted to fight under 150 claim a 154 title?
Let’s be real. No one cares to pay “pay-per-view” money to see Margarito, and Pacquiao has gotten boring. This “title” was only thrown in to add some incentive for fans to pay to watch this garbage.
I agree with plastic pac. It is terribly difficult for a person with less than 5% body fat to burn off a single pound and still compete at a high level. I’ve been a competitive powerlifter. Burning down for competition is hard, with the worst part being the last 1 or 2 pounds. Pacquiao’s demanding that everyone he fights comes in under their usual fighting weight is a definite strategy to give him an advantage. I also think that if any of the fighter Pacquiao beat under those standards had ever known the difference that burning off one extra pound can make on their body, they would have never agreed to those standards.
It’s my opinion that if he had fought those men at their correct weights, he would have been destroyed and no one would care who he fought in the Fall.
This fight is killing boxing and diluting the achievements of world champions past and present.
What is a catchweight?? All divsions are seperated by at least 5 pounds. Example: welterweight is from 141-147, 147 being the heaviest a welterweight can go and jr. middleweight is from 148-154, 154 being the heaviest a jr middleweight can go which means a fight in the jr middleweight division can actually be between 148-154 so where is the catchweight at? If 154 is the max, would a fighter actually try to come in at that exact weight or will he come in a pound or two lighter to ensure he does not get penalized? Then the fighters have an overnight time frame to rehydrate. Back in the days, fighters used to get weighted in on fight night with no chance of rehydrating. I’m I right or i’m I wrong?? The actual results after rehydrating, Margarito would still come in at least 12 pounds heavier.
Back in the day, If a middleweight wanted to fight a heavyweight, ther WAS NO CATCH WEIGHT! The heavyweight fougt at his weight and the middleweight tried his hardest to get bigger if that’s what he thought he needed to do.
This man is an opportunistic coward! The Jr. Middleweight limit is 154lbs. If he wants to fight for a Jr. Middleweight title, he should not get to rewrite the weight classes to do so. He’s fighting for a title with an upper limit of 154 lbs! Anyone fighting against him should have the right to come in at 154 lbs! Will he only agree to DEFEND at 150 lbs or less?!

When Floyd fought De La Hoya for the 154 lbs title, he couldn’t get over 150lbs; but he DID NOT require De La Hoya to stay under 150 lbs too! He fought a boxer who was allowed to fight WITHIN THE WEIGHT LIMITS of the title being fought for. Pacquiao is a BUM!

Last time I read, all the anti pacman writers have no trust to pacquiao, that he will be knockout by cotto, because pacman is small and ambitious. All this writers are now saying, “we all know pacman will crashed this guy and it will be a boring fight”. We pacmans fans are happy to hear that from you. Because now you have all the respect to pacman. Cheers!!!
Never underestimate any opponent. Margarito is no pushover. If the catch weight is not illegal, I have no qualms about that agreement. I’ll just watch the fight and enjoy it. Too bad some people can’t do that.
And for the record, I’m a Pac fan who is very unhappy that he is fighting Margarito. Unfortunately, Team Pacquiao and Top Rank want to keep his stock high for a May fight against Floyd (my opinion) and are now treating the November fight as a stop-over to the big one. That means Arum will find the smartest choice of opponent within his stable. Bob is rolling the dice on the controversy of Margarito’s own sordid past, but I think it is going to bite him in the butt.
A fight with Berto would be smarter. Bradley is overrated and not a big draw. Williams is also not a big draw, and poses too many style/size problems for the humorously smaller Pacquiao. Who else? I’ll tell you what would make a goodly amount of money and buzz…

If you watch margarito fight, he is really one exciting fighter…then combine hime to fight pacquiao. These is going to be one very exciting fight to watch. It is worth inviting people and paying for the fight.
Many have convinced themselves that this is the ONLY fight left as an option for Pac. But, that’s BS. How is it Clottey was a suitable opponent for Pac, who has no US following, yet, the top US fighters don’t cut it? Obviously, the reason is that NONE of these fighters fight for Top Rank. It is the one and ONLY reason a fighter with Margarito’s past jumps ahead of the line, and gets a shot at the title and to be the #1P4P.
This fight might actually do decent on PPV, because, many people either don’t know or don’t care about what’s really at play here. We are so starved as boxing fans, for big fights, that many will still pay to see this. SMDH.

There are no fighters left, that pacquiao can fight. The bradleys,the berto’s, are not of a big draw. Shane Moseley is old and pass his prime and will never outlast pacquiao(Coto has beaten Moseley).And talking about JMM,…pacquiao is a different pacquiao now… and people knows it.
There are more competitve fights for Manny with a game Timothy Bradley, Andre Berto, Shane Mosely, or even JMM.
Antonio Margarito is tailor made for Pac, who will NEVER be the same after his fight with Shane Mosely. Pac fans know that this will NOT be a competitve fight b/c Shane Mosely already destroyed Margo with his speed and flurry of punches. Margo is a volume puncher but he needs space to throw his wide looping punches……and against Pac, he wont see the light of day. Pac fans should have learned this the last time with Clottey, who posed ZERO threat to Pac. Say what you will about Mayweathers fight with Mosely, but at least Floyd had to face and overcome some adversity to win the fight. When was the last time that Pac faced ANY adversity against a game opponent?? The last competitive fight that Pac had was against JMM, and he has refused to fight him again. We all know what happened when Pac was publicly called out and challenged by a very game Shane Mosely. Pac seems to be content now to cement his lagacy on beating the hec out of big name opponents who no longer pose ANY threat to his career. NO fan of Pac can justify this…there is ZERO props for Pac fighting Margarito……NONE. The funny thing is, is that Pac fans continue to crucify Mayweather for “cherrypicking” his opponents, but Pac has without a doubt taken over that distinction.

Only reason anyone wants to see the fight is to see marg completely destroyed. Anyone who loves boxing has got to hate that guy – he ruined cotto’s career. Never been the same fighter. Feed him to the lions I say – if not Moseley again then the best person to do it properly is Manny. Boxing’s a blood sport – if we didn’t enjoy watching the mexican getting pounded its doubtful we’d enjoy boxing at all – everyone wants to see the big knockout. How better to see it than against someone you want to see knocked out anyway. Hope it retires him.

Catchweights themselves are not a bad thing. But when you almost always use catchweights and its always for a title, I have a problem with that. To make it easy lets say someones fighting for a heavyweight belt and the weight is say 205 or higher, and a fighter at 170 wants to fight a heavy at a catchweight of 185. who ever wins is the winner, i always give them credit..BUT YOU AINT THE HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPION!! Fight at the regular weight or its non title..If you want to fight weight drained fighters and they want a payday fine. But no belt or title.. All this 8 divisions champion stuff is b.s….

Look, in all seriousness if you think about who is involved this fight is what we should have all expected. I truly believe Arum is still holding out for the Mayweather/Manny fight but since it´s not happening this year (Floyd only fights once a year and when his money runs out he comes back for another fight) so Arum needs a ´filler´fight. Margarito has a huge mexican following, throws a lot of punches and has controversy written all over him. Everybody makes some money, we see an exciting fight and unless Margarito pulls upset Manny wins and we give the Floyd/Manny negotiations another go around.

I like Manny the fighter, he has an exciting style but this catchweight business is really getting old. I think because of the opponents Manny has had they have been willing to use these catchweights but even as a fan of his I believe Manny is losing credibility with this nonsense, you either fight at one weight division or another, it´s almost like saying the rules do not apply to him anymore and at the end of the day it will hurt his legacy.
I didn’t hear any complaints about catchweights when:
* Bernard Hopkins KO9 Oscar DeLa Hoya 18/9/04
The catchweight was 158, and it was used to allow the much smaller Oscar some leeway, the winner would be #1 at middleweight.
Did the catchweight hurt either man?
Negative – Hopkins showed, once again, what discipline really means. Hopkins had never weighed in so light in all of his career. He was 39 years old. He would only fight 3 more times at 160 before moving up to light-heavy; but he made a mockery of the catchweight coming in at 156.
Was the catchweight a good thing or a bad thing?
Mostly good. Oscar didn’t belong up there, but it brought Hopkins overground and netted him a big purse, whilst Oscar was allowed a “nothing to lose” shot at true boxing immortality.

What was the catchweight and why was it used?
Even for the first Pavlik fight, Taylor was struggling to neatly make 160 and offered Kelly a non-title fight at above 160; Pavlik quite rightly told him “no”. The second time the two met the catchweigt was agreed primarly in to allow Taylor some relief at the weight.
Was the title at stake?
Neither held a title at 168 where the fight was contested.
Did the catchweight hurt either man?
Probably not – and it certainly helped Taylor who showed no signs of the stamina issue that had hurt him in the first fight, Pavlik boxing him to a decision rather than blowing him out.
Was the catchweight a good thing or a bad thing?
It made for an interesting and competitive fight with a defining result. The only negative was no title was at stake.

i have now given up on mayweather v pacquiao ever happening because we all know that floyd wants to retain his unbeaten record.i personally do not think that margarito deserves a shot against manny because it sends out the wrong signals to up and coming boxers about cheating.in saying that however,i do hope if he does fight margarito,that it happens in vegas because i am eager to see the greatest the boxer on the planet fight in the flesh before he retires,which could be very soon….and i’m dying to go to vegas again…..

Pacquiao is moving up to a heavier division so it is reasonable that he would consider a catch-weight for his initial fight in that division.
Today, weigh-ins are one day before the fight. Margarito is a natural welterweight so going down to 150 pounds is not difficult. He can always gain pounds in the intervening one day before the fight.
Correct me if I am wrong, but in the old days there is only one weigh-in and that is on the day of the fight. So it is more valid in those days for catch-weights to drain fighters.
Margarito is going to take a beating and how long the fight last is all going to be about how much punishment his head is going to take

I agree with you jake that people need to start appreciating the opportunity to see one of the best boxers of our time, rather than trying to knock the guy down. I respected Mayweather a lot more in the past, and I would have more respect for Mayweather if he simply didn’t want to fight Pacquiao without trying to tarnish Pacquiao’s name. But when his family and him sit there and accuse Pacquiao of taking PED’s without an ounce of evidence, just sucks!!! The Mayweather camp needs to start giving the guy credit for all that he has accomplished, if they want to be given the same credit and respect that they think they deserve. Pacquiao is one of the best boxers ever, and I am so glad and fortunate that I was able to see him in his prime!!!!

I really don’t understand why people are being hard on Manny for taking this fight with Margarito. Yes, Margarito doesn’t deserve this fight, I have said that ever since he was caught with loaded gloves and were talking about putting him in the ring with Manny. And yes, I would of rather watched Manny fight someone else. But one needs to consider how much money Pacquiao has made for Arum and how much more money Pacquiao can still make for Arum, and then think if it costed Malinaggi $75,000 to get out of his contract with his promoter, how much would it cost Manny to get out of his contract with Top Rank? I am sure he is like me and would rather make money than have to spend it!!!! Manny fights his fights for his fans, and those of us who are Pacquaio fans want to see him fight 2 times a year. I am not going to be hard on the guy for fighting who his promoter puts in front of him. Id like to see it at a full 154 but manny hasnt even made 147 at a weigh in. Usualy he comes in at 145 or 46. But margarito isnt a huge jr middle weight, like he is at welter. So i dont see 4 lbs effecting margaritos persormance. Im all for screwing margacheto as much as possible and dont believe he should be alowed to fight at all. The real question is why not fight some one who is not promoted by Arum? Their are guys who could make pacman and Arum allot of money, like, berto, and angulo who i dont see as major threats against pacuiao.
