Pacquiao open to a rematch with Cotto, but at a catch weight – News

By Jason Kim: World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is open to fighting a rematch against Miguel Cotto, according to writer Nick Giongco at MB.com.ph. However, the rematch will likely take place at a catch weight for Cotto’s WBA junior middleweight title. Pacquiao already destroyed Cotto last year in a one-sided 12th round knockout victory in November. The fight was never competitive, as Cotto was just way out of his class, too slow and unable trade with Pacquiao without getting pounded on.

Although many boxing fans have no interest in watching Pacquiao go over old ground and fight a guy he just finished beating only eight months ago, it’s looking like Cotto will be promoter Bob Arum’s backup plan if the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao can’t be made. The problem is Arum doesn’t have many other options as far as finding other opponents in his Top Rank stable. Antonio Margarito, one of Arum’s best fighters, may not be able to get his boxing license back in the United States by November. Arum needs to start marketing Pacquiao’s next fight very soon, and he can’t do that if he’s unsure if Margarito will be able to get his license back or not.

In an article at Primera Hora, Pacquiao’s adviser Mike Koncz had this to say about a potential Pacquiao vs. Cotto rematch: “I spoke with Manny in the Philippines and he likes the idea of Cotto gunning for revenge if the fight against Mayweather doesn’t happen. Mayweather has until July 15th to study the documents and sign them. Mayweather needs Manny more than Manny needs Mayweather.” Cotto has a new trainer Emanuel Steward, who has tinkered with Cotto’s style of fighting and has him using his jab a lot more than he used to. Cotto looked good for the most part in defeating WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman by a 9th round stoppage last month on June 5th at Yankee Stadium.

There are thoughts that Steward can make enough changes in Cotto’s style to where he can now actually beat Pacquiao. However, boxing fans will still likely be wondering why Pacquiao is going backwards to fight a guy he just easily wiped out when there are a number of other fighters that Pacquiao could be fighting instead of Cotto. It’s an easy choice for Arum to make by putting Pacquiao back in with Cotto. It might be a fight that a lot of casual boxing fans would like to see, but fans of Cotto and Pacquiao will want to see it, at least enough to bring in around 1 million pay-per-view buys or slightly less. That’s a successful fight, and one that is even better when you’re promoting both of the fighters like Arum.

There will like be a catch weight involved if Pacquiao fights Cotto for his title, Koncz says. This was also the case when Pacquiao fought Cotto for his WBO welterweight title last November. Instead of fighting Cotto at the full 147 pound limit, Pacquiao, the challenger, was able to fight Cotto at a catch weight of 145. It’s debatable whether the catch weight had any effect on the outcome of the fight.

Cotto was over-matched even before the fight started, as he had taken a vicious pounding the year before by Antonio Margarito and had looked terrible in a close 12 round split decision win over Joshua Clottey in June of 2009. The catch weight probably didn’t help matters, but very likely it wouldn’t have mattered what weight the fight was fought at. Cotto was almost destined to lose.

    @The Bible of Boxing – I agree 100%.

  • kray says:

@NEL – I agree 100%. But, unfortunately, they are set to play Cotto, once again. I really hope he learned something from the last experience. Not just the fight itself…but the pre-fight decisions. I can only assume that Manny Steward can help guide him through what Arum and Roach are about to put him through…again.

  • JACK FLORES says:

I AM NOT A DEFENDER OF MANNY PACMAN BUT RELYING TO TRUTH AND HONESTY. I DON’T REALLY BELIEVE THAT CATCH WEIGHT WAS APPLIED DURING PACQUIAO VS COTTO FIGHT BOUT. EVERYBODY KNOWS DURING THE WEIGHT IN. PACQUIAO’S WEIGHT WAS 144 LBS AND COTTO 145 LBS. COTTO WAS EVEN HEAVIER BY 1 POUND.

you have to understand.. the sport evolved and the people around it evolved as well.. i agree with you at some point, you can t really blame these 2 if they re stubborn… it s all about MONEY.. nothing more… the 4 horsemen fought only for fame and greatness before because boxing before wasn t as popular as it is now..like manny pacquiao,he is now also a politician an actor, a businessman and also a boxer.. it s really MONEY.. as i’ve said before, this arguement about the fight purse and the drug testing and all the BS might just be a part of their game plan to promote their fight… they would be realy dumb if they didn t do this…the fight purse is only on paper.. what do we know.. there couold be a bigger prize under the table.. so let me conclude, they are all in it for money and nothing else

The bible of boxing did a great job. He summed it up and should be writting some of these columns. The guys that are want hits as much as anything else.I have a new slant on this-Weather your a Floyd or Manny fan as of now your boy will always have an asterisk next to thier name in the record book.It will read*Despite his great record he is thought by most fans as being one of the dumbest and definitely the biggest financial loser in boxing history because for reasons that only he will fully know he walked away from what should have been the biggest pay day ever in boxing .SO BE IT.THEY ARE BOTH LOSERS.

  • FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT says:

Freddie Roach has set a precedent that has done nothing but harm the sport of boxing. Its fine to use a catchweight to have a fight between 2 fighters, however; if it is not held at the “Title Weight” the belt should not be at stake. This is how Manny has achieved his bragging objectives.

Arum, Roach and Pacquiao are absolute JOKES!!!

  • Mutchie says:

@MbfromPhilly your completley right Manny refusing to do the random blood testing told me everything i needed to know …
Random should mean random but he will only fight if there is a cut off point which to me makes it clear there is a MAJOR reason for him needing that 14 days – ALEX ARIZA HAS GOT HIM ON PEDS IT,S AS SIMPLE AS THAT…HE HAS BEEN FOOLING US ALL !!!!

AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ABOUT THE CATCHWEIGHTS !!!

  • MJ says:

Let’s all look at the situation if Mayweather-Pacquiao doesn’t happen. Their fights will most probably be Mayweather-Martinez or a layoff (I didn’t include Mayweather-Berto because they have the same adviser in Al Haymon) for Floyd, while it will be Pacquiao-Cotto II or Pacquiao-Margarito for Manny. It’s obvious that a Mayweather-Martinez fight will be more interesting than either of Pacquiao’s possible fights in the wake of their dominating victories over Shane Mosley and Kelly Pavlik, respectively. Pacquiao will demand a catchweight against Cotto the same way Mayweather will demand a catchweight against Martinez. It’s disgusting but it is what it is, they’re the draws so they make the terms. I believe that Mayweather-Pacquiao will happen, but if it doesn’t, Floyd will be in a better position.

  • NEL says:

    @KRAY
JUST A QUESTION IS IT A REAL WIN WHEN ONE FIGHTER GETS MORE ADVANTAGES THEN ANOTHER?
I MEAN IS OK WITH THE MONEY IF A FIGHTER IS MORE FAMOUS THEN ANOTHER ONE HE DESSERVE THE LION SHARE BUT WHEN YOU ASK FOR THINGS LIKE YOU HAVE TO LOSSE WEIGHT THATS LIKE IF IN THE WORLD SERIES ONE TEAM WONT PLAY ON LESS THE OTHER TEAM DONT SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE.
I MEAN BRO MONEY ,SIZE ,GLOVE ,RING, DATE COTTO GAVE MANNY A SHOT AT THE TITTLE AT WEIGHT HE SHOULDN’T IF ANYTHING MANNY OWES COTTO A SHOT TO FIGHT ON A MORE PLAIN FEILD…

  • Boxing420 says:

manny shold a got the catchweight king not the 040 king….Thats obviously Mayweather…..Manny should have to fight mosely before he even gets a chance at mayweather but arum wont allow that hed rather keep the money in house

  • kray says:

@NEL – You make a good point there. If he fights Cotto at 154, the glove size would be 10oz. I’m not certain that’s negotiable either…even in Texas. If this fight were to take place, Cotto should not concede in weight or glove size (if that were negotiable). If Pac wants an 8th title, he should earn it at the OFFICIAL weight this time. Although, if Cotto doesn’t concede to a C/W and smaller gloves (if possible), I suspect this fight won’t happen. The lure of another payday and the chance to redeem himself, may prove to be too big a temptation for Cotto to resist Manny’s (and Roach’s) demands. Hopefully, Manny Steward will steer him in the right direction.

  • MoneyMay says:

Catch weight wow typical Manny like a girl, title shouldn’t be on the line then. Man up Manny fight Berto then.

  • Jamnor says:

If I was Cotto I would only fight the “catchweight king” if he agrees to random style blood testing up to the fight! Are they not fighting for Cotto’s belt? If he does fight Cotto again, and earn an eighth world title, I think it will do more harm for his legacy than good it.

  • MbfromPhilly says:

    @Jazz do it
I wanna see this fight more than u think. To be totally honest with you; after the De La Hoya fight I was in the front row of the Pacquiao bandwagon! He was a little guy in there gritting his teeth and doing what needed to be done: kicking some ass! Every boxing fan can appreciate that. Check my post after the Pacquiao/Cotto fight and Im certain you’ll see I was all about Pacquiao. My problems with him began after Top Rank abruptly terminated the first set of negotiations last year. Pacquiao asked alot of Mayweather (IMO) wanting ring size, glove size, last to enter, ridiculous weight penalty…Mayweather asked for 1 thing; Olympic Style Random Drug Testing, and the fight was off. Just like that! Like 2 days later the Clottey fight is announced! And at this point it’s irrelevant how the issue got started; what is relevant is that an elite fighter at the TOP of the sport! FOTY…FOTD has refused to have his blood tested RANDOMLY in order to make the 2nd or 3rd biggest fight in the History of the sport. That’s boxing fan newsworthy to me.

THIS 10 OUNCES 8 OUNCES IS THE REASON WHY THE FIGHT WITH MAYWEATHER IS STIILED NOT DONE TRUST ME FLOYD WANTS 10 GRANT MANNY WANTS 8 REYES!!

  • NEL says:

SO WHAT YOUR SAYING IS THAT THE REASON WHY ROACH & MANNY ASK COTTO TO COME DOWN IN WEIGHT IS BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO FIGHT COTTO AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME?
IS NOT DEBATABLE WHEN THE FIGHT HAPPEN THAT WAY!MANNY DID NOT KNOCK OUT COTTO EVEN WITH HIM BEING SLOW DAMAGE WEIGHT DRAINDED AND NO TRAINER.
KNOW I WANT SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN TO ME HOW DOES A FIGHTER LOOK GOOD WHEN HE HAS TO DRY HIM SELF UP AS LIKE A RAISIN HE LOOK LIKE A GHOST FOR THAT FIGHT BODER LINE ZOMBIE LIKE!
MY VIEW COTTO LOOK MORE BAD THEN MANNY DID LOOK GOOD HOW DO CONSIDER YOU BEAT A FIGHTER WHEN YOU MADE HIM DRY UP FOR WITH YOU.MANNY WILL TAKE THE FIGHT BACAUSE HE KNOWS THIS AND THIS WILL BE A MISTAKE BECAUSE EVEN IF THEY FIGHT AT 151 OR 152 THE OFFICAL SIZE GLOVES FOR A 154 TITTLE IS 10 OUNCES THIS WILL TAKE AWAY SPEED AND POWER FROM MANNY.

Will what a surprise, the catchweight king wants to rematch cotto but only if it’s @ a catchweight? That’s who you call the pound 4 pound king? what a f****** sissy!! if you think your the best pound for pound, then fight pound 4 pound. Miguel cotto, don’t fight this chump unless it’s at the full weight of 154! I can’t believe I’ve even heard people say pacquaio is the greatest of all time. what a bunch of misguided losers. back in the day of sugar ray leonard, marvin haglar, tommy hearns, jake la motta, rocky marciano and company, when in there and fought 15 rds with ease. that’s what a call real warriors pound for pound. if you ask any of the names mentioned above what’s a catchweight? They’ll probably think it’s a george foreman grill or something. lol.

  • boxtop 123 says:

    BIBLE OF BOXING
good piece and good to hear you are a fan of the sport however i do agree with you as far as the duran leonard guys of that era i agree completely i disagree strongly that manny is the closest thing to them strongly. the only fights where pac has fought and there wasnt any controversy over weights up or down were marquez 1 and 2 and morales 1 just my opinion but a fight against clottey can make it look like pac was just so devastatingly aggresive that the other guy was overwhelmed.. wouldnt even fight

  • The Bible of Boxing says:

As one of the biggest Pacman fans I will watch the fight but definitely not at a catchweight. If Pacman feels the weight is too much for him DO NOT TAKE the fight. Simple as that. If he wants a middleweight title is he going to ask Martinez for a catchweight too.
Remember I was the biggest Mayweather fan before but like I keep saying here, I am a bigger fan of boxing than any boxer and I will not accept any tinkering with rules etc. I agreed that the Oscar fight had to be at catchweight because that was the only way a junior light weight and a super welter could have met.
If they fought at 130 one guys is completely drained and if it it was at 154 one guy would be bloated. 147 was reasonable as Manny went way up and Oscar came down a bit. If Manny had lost people would have said he was too slow just like Winky was vs Hopkins and Marquez vs Mayweather.
I understood why he asked for and got a catchweight vs Cotto as he needed time to acclimatize to 147 and Cotto was a large and strong welter. Now he is a full welter and since Cotto came in under his regular fighting weight to make the fight, and some people felt it was an advantage for Manny, let me see Manny return the favour and prove he is a man.
I love his sytle and his heart but if he insists on making a catchweight fight again, I will lose respect for him. In the old days greats like Sugar Ray Robinson did not have jr and super weight divisions. They used to give up 10+ lbs to get a shot at the next title. They never asked for compromises. In fact Gene Tunney’s 1st and only loss was to a middleweight when Tunney was about 180.
It was customary for guys to move up 2 classes and give up 20+ lbs and still beat bigger, taller and stronger guys. They used speed to avoid the huge, slower shots. Manny has speed and can take a good shot. I know he is short but Duran an old time great, moved from lightweight way up to middleweight and beat guys without asking for catchweight.
And people wonder why I keep saying today’s fighters do not really have the same pedigree that the old timers had. Manny is the closest to the them BUT NOT if he keeps asking for a compromise. Manny, I am calling you out! Do not go writing cheques that your bank account can’t handle. People like me who love your warrior mentality will begin to think you are playing us like violins.
We already know you beat Cotto but the question now: was it fair? Was he mentally or physically at a disadvantage? Let us see how game you are. You already won at the catchweight so let us see you at his new weight. If you win, you will get more credit than starving him.
And while we are at it, stop talking about Floyd. Leave that to the promters. You have always been the quiet reserved and shy guy who let his promoters promote and who let his fists tak for him……in the ring. Do not spoil that. As a new politician you can talk about politics in parliament, but be the Manny we love and respect. Just fight!

  • JAZZ Do It says:

    @MBfromPhilly
That’s ok. you are still hoping Floyd won’t fight PAC. From the reports both teams have agreed to the terms including the RBT charade.

Don’t worry, Arum has given him an option to fight PAC this year or next year if he is not ready to fight the FOTD.

  • MbfromPhilly says:

    @Jazz do it
You’re lying! Pacquaio never has and never will agree to random testing to make the fight Mayweather!

  • JAZZ Do It says:

Can we have an article on Floyd’s next opponent if he decides to opt out of the PAC fight?? (After PAC agreed to his random testing, what a joke!!!).

Ah I forgot, he is going to take a year or couple of years break and go after the smaller and past his prime (like him) kind of guy. PAC would be retired then (What a relief for Floyd).

  • vince vegas says:

Pac had one ‘catch weight’ fight; Cotto. Delahoya dictated the terms to Pac regading their fight, Pac came up one or two divisions. Unfortunately Oscar he underestimated how difficult it would be for him (Oscar)to go down to 147 again, and definitly underestimated Manny’s desire to win. Not Pac’s fault, Oscar was the boss.

All that being said; Cotto looks healty @ 154, at 147 he looks like a swizzle stick. Considering Manny’s HOF career is nearing it’s conclusion, he should fight Cotto @ 154. Manny doesn’t have a lot to loose, legacy wise, if he were to loose to a strong, healthy light welter.

At 154 I watch, any less I’m simply not interested.

    TO EVERYONE
i am glad most of you see that pac is only fighting arum fighters that dont really have a chance and like some of you i agree you should fight at the weight of the belt you want so i ask you all if pac or mayweather challenge a middle weight and either floyd or pac comes in at 147 and the middle weight comes in at 160 if the welterweight wins the fight should he be the middleweight champ or even be ranked as a middle weight even if they agree on a catch weight?
PAC IS PROTECTED BY ARUM AND ROACH IF HE FIGHTS COTTO IT WILL HAVE TO BE IN NEW YORK OR PUERTO RICO IF HE FIGHTS MARGARITO IT WILL HAVE TO BE IN MEXICO FOR A GOOD TURNOUT SAD SAD SAD WHEN YOU HAVE WILLIAMS OR BERTO OUT THEIR FORGET FLOYD WE ALL KNOW MANNY SACYOW IS A BIATCH

  • R J Hill says:

contrary to what the writer says ,the fight was competitive.cotto just played into Mannys hand.Paquiao was much the stronger, which raised the question of ped use.cotto went straight into his power,Never thought of defense.that game plan made it look worse. If they should fight again with stuart as the coach,he would use side to side movement, jabbing alot, and concentrating on movement and timing.

  • Baby Floyd says:

We will be seeing a slower Pacman at catch weight 150 lbs.

    This time Cotto can win.

Comes in overweight trying to defend the WBC flyweight title, loses the belt on the scales.

Forces Cotto to put his 147 belt on the line at a 145 catchweight.

Now demanding that Cotto put his 154 belt on the line at a 150 catchweight.

    What a Catchweight Chump.

  • FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT says:

Pactards have no idea how much Roach is killing boxing. This new catchweight business is a disgrace and a blackeye for boxing.

If its not at the “Title weight”, its NOT a “Title fight”!

  • DarkCityDeacon says:

If Pac does not ask for catch weight then he is not living up to his reputation. Seems like people are tired of this cowardly act of Pacquack. Except, of course, the Pacnuthuggers.

The “fighting pride of the Philippines” pushing his quest to amass titles by cherry-picking and dehydrating his opponents. Pride? Na-ah, I say “shame”.

Did you say Pacquack is keeping boxing alive? No, he is spitting on boxing’s face.

  • howcanyoubepoundforpoundfightingatacatchweight says:

How can you be P4P fighting catchweight fights. Arum thinks people are stupid. Manny is fighting Floyd and that’s the end of it. Cotto is undefeated to me. Manny is coming into the fight clean he’s getting his ass whooped to the point where no one will support him and Arum because everyone will know.

  • FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT says:

BREAKING NEWS!!!! Manny Pacquiao Challenges Vitaly Klitschko to a “fair” fight at 143 pounds. There will be a 50 million dollar penalty for every pound over 143 Vitaly weighs over the required catch-weight. Klitschko was last seen smoking crack in a Moscow sauna in an attempt to lose the required 100 pounds. After pummeling a comatose Klitschko into submission over a five round contest Bob Arum and Freddie Roach were quoted as saying how proud they were of Pacman for beating a proud heavyweight champion. Pacmans fans will petition The U.N. to adopt “International Pacman day”

Do not laugh, it could happen.

  • Trouble says:

If Miguel gives Manny a catch weight it will most likely be @ 151 pounds no less I’m guessing…but he really shouldn’t give him a catch weight I believe,if he does he’s a fool for doing so…Miguel can beat Manny at this weight class he’s in possibly by knock out but I think Miguel will box him,and box him successfully…It’s a smaller guy so he should put a better show of his boxing ability’s..he’s stronger than before so he should be able to keep Manny away from trying to slug with him…Miguel knows his opponent now so he will train different and harder than before..I bet on Miguel to win

  • A.L. says:

  • kevy kev says:

@boxtolive the sad thing about this is that you have a fighter that’s beating his oponents with no claus is considered #2 p4p, this is ridiculous. At a certain time or another imma lose interest at some point becuz boxing seems 2 be faker then pro wrestling.

  • Boxtolive says:

What a surprise, another catch-weight fight for Pacman. Why do people proclaim him to be this world beating warrior when he mostly fights guys when they have been weakened brfore the first bell even rings. He should fight Cotto at 154. If he does not he cannot be considered p4p king. Why not challenge one of the Klitschko’s and make it a catch-weight fight? This is ridiculous and Manny is turning into a circus act.

  • kevy kev says:

@Smartie the time was then like the time is now, the only way manny can get respect if he just stop ordering other opponents to come in at a certain weight 2 help him that’s like telling kobe bryant to not play the entire playoffs becuz kevin garnett aint feeling well or he’s hurt, it doesnt make sense and that’s why bob arum matching his FETUS with his teammates 2 fool boxing, It’s not good to try and fool most people like me, It’s an insult. Clottey had a slightly bruised right jaw that was it and manny looked as if he had gotten in 10 fights in one night, I dont care what skin color clottey is becuz you seen his face when he fought cotto, I just had 2 state that

  • kevy kev says:

@sophocles I still disagree with you on the weight issue, evidently if clottey had the SH**s he was trying 2 stay at that exact weight which sounds more logic 2 me and anyone with common sense (which u didnt trying 2 be comic in your last post and i respect that though) but it’s all a theory like: marg and his plasters- it’s a theory that could be bought into play that he used it on cotto “which is more logic” “agree” or “disagree”. 2 manny and his catchweight fights- if he fights all his fights at welterw as catchweight, then why issue the catchweight clause, so by your logic I’m wrong hhhhhhmmmmmm makes me wonder why a guy wants a catchweight 4. what you are saying doesnt make any sense. Tell and please explain 2 me what is catchweight. Bob didnt want the public “boxing fans” that the fight between pac and clottey was @ catchweight becuz everyone has been calling pac the catchweight king which in fact had more to do with the decline of ppv’s the the so-called steroid allegations

  • basch says:

I’ll watch it. I mean why not ? I like cotto as a fighter as do i with manny. Someone mentioned berto, put him in with cotto, I know it won’t be a high sellin ppv like cotto vs manny but in a fighters sense that would be awesome…manny if he doesnt fight mayweather i want him to fight mosley

  • Sophocles says:

    @Alex

Pacquiao, Top Rank, Al Haymon, Golden Boy have ALL agreed to fight terms and are waiting on Floyd to decide if he wants to fight. He’s the ONLY thing that can hold up or cancel the fight at this point, there’s no sugar-coating it or trying to twist facts.

Everyone is on board, he got his OSDT b.s., and the papers are in his hands. If he backs away, it’s a duck… no getting around it.

  • Smartie says:

As fans sometimes we get blinded and are just moved by our emotions. It is a fact that the fight wee want is with Mayweather but if it doesnt happen what ya gonna do? Cry? Stop watching box? I dont think so things will have to keep moving. Antonio Margarito in my opinion will not be a good match since not even Mexicans like him anymore. He got beaten by Mosley and Cotto bet Mosley. Yes I know Pac Man beat Clottey and is was a one sided fight from the 3rd roung up but Cottos fight w foremaqnd showed he can manage some speed now. All experts wanted to see that fioght and what I saw(I was there) was Foreman outboxed and surprised that Cotto was beating him in his own fight, bEFORE HE GOT INJURED HE WAS ALEREADY BLODIED, I have some cool pics and trust me his corner was VERY Concerned too. Ok whats my point, Cotto is at a better weight than before, with a top class team including Manny Steward just got another belt and although Manny hit him he has beenm the only one to stay in from of him for 12 rounds, you Know Clottey ..but that fight was a joke. De la Hoya, Hatton they were stop and were not even opening to figh just defense, Cotto tryes went down yes but was back in..
GIVE Cotto one more at at least 151 pounds, so no excuses this time put the belt in the middle and lets see if Manny can beat him again, Im sure he wont. COTTO WILL BEAT MANNY @150-1 if not then I will have no doubts of Manny. 145 for Cotto was way too much for him , not to mention his green corner. 1 year later HE IS BACK and he will beat Margarito easy(althought I think Margo shouldnt be allowerd to box in the USA)and he will have revenge with Pacman at a more fair weight..Pacquiao Cotto II,. WE WANT IT!!

  • Sophocles says:

    @Kevy Kev

Clottey didn’t have diarrhea, it was just an excuse for him sh*tting the bed- he ate something that turned him into a turtle. He finally came clean yesterday and revealed he got a case of the shakes and was afraid of getting hit by Pac and that’s why he refused to fight in the ring. He apologized to his fans and I can respect that he finally stopped reaching for excuses.

Clottey weighed-in at 147 and looked to be 160 (he usually comes into his fights at the full middleweight). I’m not in favor of a catchweight for this possible fight or even the fight really. I think Pacquiao should shut JMM up once and for all, and at this point Marquez (who I respect) would get Ricky Hattoned or worse, especially if the fight is at welter. But that fight is tailor made for 24/7 and Dallas.

If not JMM, then fight Paul Williams. Most fans wouldn’t expect him to ever sign on for that one, but Roach is on record that Manny would love that challenge if the Punisher comes back to 147 AND recently Goosen and Williams went on record that they’re next bout will be at 147… so time to put up or shut up.

Let Cotto fight Margarito again in another big PPV fight in a stadium (Yankees, new Giants, or maybe even somewhere on the West Coast like Dodgers). Then the winner can get Pac next year for his retirement fight for the 154 belt.

  • Alex says:

,,,,nobody’s interested in this fight! it’s money may or pac or no fight at all!

  • Mayweather Senior says:

What a shocker! pac wants to fight at a catchweight! Between weight draining guys , roids, and some clever marketing-CACHING CACHING says bobarum ei show me the money..

  • kevy kev says:

@Sophocles I disagree with you clottey didnt weighed in at no f***ing 160, he some how gotten diarhea a couple of days b4 the fight by most records. How the hell you get 160 or 165 that wasnt the same clottey that fought cotto. Bob arum is doing a fine job of picking pac fights and he’s also doing a fine job of fooling u people by using the media. Of-course clottey is ripped with muscles which made him look big but he is bigger than that THAT NIGHT check the record yourself and you’ll SEE that your WRONG.

Well he is the catch weight king diva. I dont think Ali, J. Frazier, Ray Robinson, R.Duran, J.louis, F.Mayweather and those guys had taylor made CATCHWEIGHT fights in their careers. The things bob arum does makes me think that I’m watching another version of WWE, and TNA of pro boxing, I guess he’s trying 2 tear the walls down, the media of this era is trying to take accomplishments away from the true fighters of the sport, damaging boxing with sleezy tatics, and they are the only ones that’s doing it.

  • Sophocles says:

Koncz is an idiot. He also said the Clottey fight would be a catchweight and both Arum and Roach shut him up and Clottey weighed in at the welter limit (and probably around 160-165 on fight night). The catchweight before against Cotto made sense because Manny was testing the waters at welter against a bigger, stronger natural welter and it was only 1lb less than what Cotto had weighed-in at in his last fight before Manny (clottey, weighed in at 146, catchweight was 145).

There is absolutely no reason to fight at a catchweight especially now that Manny knows he’s too fast and powerful for Cotto and Miguel’s punches don’t faze him (they might at 154, but still). I wouldn’t mind seeing this fight for Cotto’s belt, even though I think there are a few much better and possibly lucrative matchups for Manny (not necesarily Top Rank/Arum). But a catchweight fight is not something I would support.

Cotto is the champion and should stand up for his right to come in at the limit if he is putting it on the line, if Koncz had his way EVERY Pacquiao fight would be a catchweight.

And I am saying all this as a big Manny Pacquiao fan and supporter.

  • Joe says:

Put Manny to the test if he is really the pound king. Let him fight Cotto at 154lbs and that will be very interesting.

  • NO STEROIDS says:

ITS NOT THE CATCH WEIGHT ITS THE STEROID STUPID

  • john says:

Forget catchweight! if its for his title it should be at 154.

  • Kar says:

what stupidity…just so he can get an 8th world title.
And he already fought him at catch weight.
Good luck doing good PPV with that fight
