Mayweather Sr. thinks the main reason Hatton lost to Pacquiao was because he was scared

By William Mackay: A lot of people wonder why Ricky Hatton was so easily destroyed by Manny Pacquiao last year in his two round blowout to the Filipino star. Hatton’s trainer at the time, Floyd Mayweather Sr., gives a number of reasons why he feels that Hatton was beaten by Pacquiao in an article by Chris Robinson at the Examiner.com, Mayweather Sr. says “I think Ricky Hatton was scared more than anything.”
Hatton made things worse for himself by not following Mayweather’s game plan of trying to box Pacquiao. Instead, Hatton rushed Pacquiao immediately at the opening bell in the 1st round, trying to run over him like he did against most of his over-matched opposition that was fed to him during his career. That was the perfect strategy against the lesser fighters that had been put in with Hatton, but against a world class fighter like Pacquiao, Hatton needed to follow the advice of his trainer Mayweather and not revert back to his primitive style of fighting that he used in the past.
Mayweather Sr. also thinks that Hatton’s assistant trainer Lee Beard made things confusing for Hatton and didn’t help matters. Mayweather Sr. said “The guy Lee Beard was training him when he went back home. He went back there and he trained him [Hatton] all over again…A lot of people told me that when he came back they went into a different game plan. So everything I built, he [Beard] broke it down. You can’t learn from two different trainers. You can only train with one person at a time. ”
Mayweather Sr. may be right. It may have been better had he been the only voice that Hatton was listening to during training camp. However, the outcome probably would have been the same had Beard not been there. Mayweather Sr. acknowledges that, and believes that Hatton would have lost anyway, saying “I really don’t think nothing could have changed what happened in the fight. It probably would have been a matter of how long it lasted.”
It’s really admirable that Mayweather Sr. is real about this. A lot of trainers would have not faced up to the truth and probably claimed that their fighter would have won had this or that happened. Mayweather Sr. at least acknowledges that Hatton was basically screwed no matter what on that night. However, Hatton sure didn’t help himself by rushing Pacquiao like he had lost his senses completely and didn’t learn a thing from Mayweather Sr. during their training camp.

Mayweather Sr ia a disgrace to the United Kingdom. He has such a little brain very, very terrible tainer. The biggest mistake Hatton made is to trust Mayweather. yeah…it looked more like hatton knew he wasn’t physically up to it & went out swinging…kind of like hearns against hagler. in hearns’ case his legs were messed up by an over-enthusiastic masseuse. given that floyd sr’s lack of commitment was well known for weeks leading up to the fight (& immortalised on 24/7 when they filmed him being hours late for training but stopping off to get a burrito on the way regardless) i’m gonna blame the trainer; floyd sr.

Same thing will happen if Mayweather Jr. is forced to face Pacquiao, He will also be scared stiff and won’t be able to execute his game plan. That’s why Sr. doesn’t want his son to face Pacman.

@Phoocquiao – I think Sr. was right about that. Hatton is just not the right fighter to exploit Pac’s tendencies. But, he gave him the proper gameplan.
I’m not sure if it’s a matter of Sr. underestimating Pac’s skills. I think it’s a matter of him underestimating Pac’s power. I don’t think anything else really surprised him. The speed and quickness were obvious. The experienced corner was obvious. I’m sure he saw the fresh win, over ODLH. And I bet he watched a ton of tape.
I’m sure in his mind, he knew exactly what to do. I think it’s just a matter of a fighter having the right combination of skills, gameplan, and ring IQ to offset the things that Pac does very well. I’m willing to bet Sr. knew Hatton was not the fighter to do that, after a few weeks of training camp. But, he had a job to do.

Any body that could get hit by the Pac would end up in the canvas. It’s just a matter of time. Now floyd is a slick boxer. But then again, like mosley showed, floyd could get hit and could be knocked out. mosley just did not have enough power to it. old age maybe…i’m not sure. but like pac claimed, if it was him in the ring with floyd, floyd’s special “0″ wont be the same.

Sr. also said that he felt Hatton could win based on Pacquiao’s weaknesses rather than Pacquiao’s strengths. He clearly underestimated Pac’s skills too.
I do agree that Hatton ignored Sr’s instructions, but even Sr. noted that it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Also, Pac has NEVER been a one-punch KO artist (as far as I remember). In fact, I remember a few fighters saying Pac didn’t hit that hard, he was just fast (DLH & Diaz, and maybe even Morales – I don’t remember that far back).
Also, Pac’s right hook has been a thing of beauty since his 2nd fight with JMM (maybe even going back to Morales 3).
But you’re right, Hatton DEFINITELY should have switched it up after the 1st knock down…

Floyd Sr has always given bis honest opinion on this fight. So, what he said here was nothing new. Hatton did not stick to the plan, which was the difference in this fight going 2 rds, instead of 12. Pac’s right hook was a thing of beauty, in that fight. He simply siezed the opportunity Hatton gave him, when he kept coming in chin first. The first knockdown, should’ve made Hatton switch it up. But, he clearly was not able to do that.
That fight is of course where SR began to think something else
was going on. Not, because Hatton lost the fight. But, because he was KO cold by a fighter who, to him, never seemed quite that strong at the lower weights, and who’d never fought at that particular weight before.
It was sorry for Hatton,that night he fought hands down,what was dangerous with a southpaw like Midget Pac.

Hatton was NOT scared. His “tactics” where just awful. The only way to beat Pacquiao is to be an effective counter puncher and have a great defence. Hatton has neither of these things so just walked onto shots. Simple as that.
