Lopez demolishes Concepcion

By Christian Ramos: Rushing into Bernabe Concepcion with a straight left in round 2, WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel López improves his record to 29-0 (26). JuanMa scored the impressive knockout victory, but not without hitting the floor in round 1. Feeling the fight was over, JuanMa dropped his right hand in the middle of an exchange, and the strong Bernabe Concepcion landed a huge left hook, dropping López and placing worries throughout the crowd in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Luckily for JuanMa, he was able to survive the last 10 seconds of round 1, although taking a loping right to the mouth. Concepcion would continue to throw huge bombs in round 2, but at the end Juan Manuel López would be too strong.

It was indeed an exciting title defense from López, but one has to wonder if JuanMa can take the risk of opening up as much as he has done against Concepción and Rogers Mtagwa against the future Hall-of-Famer Rafael Marquez. Marquez is a precise and strong boxing technician with years of experience. How much would he have left after the wars with Israel Vazquez? We’ll just have to wait until September 18, when Juan Manuel López and Rafael Marquez face off in Las Vegas. Can we be too greedy and ask for Yuriorkis Gamboa and Celestino Caballero to face off on the undercard? One can dream, can’t one?

  • little puerto rico says:

For the record its all boxing politics,Lopez is a marque fighter.Gamboa not.the little cubans in miami can support him all they want but trust me lopez sells out the arena.like i said before puertorico is the littlest island on the map with the biggest balls.Mexicans always hate on us.Its political no green cards over here.BABY

  • kojo says:

Nel.your boy almost got beat by journyman/slugger roger magtwa and gamboa destroyed him.lopez is still green in my eyes and has still a great/future hall of famer.in rafeal marquez to prove to me he is for real.as. For bernabe conception he is only 22 years old has a lot of room/time to improve.showed a lot of heart.an average fighter would have quit.he just needs to work on block with the opposing well throwing his shots.he hhas the natual ability/talent to be a great fighter.

  • Jamnor says:

It was an exciting fight while it lasted, but this fight just proved for the 1000th time that a straight puncher is going to beat a wide hooker to the punch every time. When you throw in the fact that Lopez was just the all around better fighter, this outcome came as no surprise. What was surprising is he got caught with that short left hook. His matchup with Marquez should be a great fight, looking forward to it.

  • NO STEROIDS says:

while GAMBOA WAITS FOR LOPEZ TELL
HIM TO FIGHT CARLOS IVAN VALAQUEZ
    WHO DESTROYED HIM ONCE ALREADY

  • Paulie says:

Lopez – Marquez could be a fight of the year. Can´t wait for that fight. Lopez is the best featherweight in the world. He should take on Yuriokis Gamboa and Chris John next!

  • abdul says:

it was an exciting fight! the problem with concepcion he’s too reckless, he keep attacking lopez and he’s open for counter punch. rematch would be nice!

  • Da Dude says:

Well Concepcion was training with Paquiao… getting counsil from him… but he forget that Lopez was getting counsil from Tito Trinidad!!!

  • Jamie says:

Gamboa the purest talent in boxing is going to walk right through this clown

  • NO STEROIDS says:

i told u morons the only way u win is through
    steroid k. o

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Arthur…

elbows and headbutts are part of the game. But I did see the same thing you saw. I’m not sure it would have made a difference though. Concepcion lacked the quickness that his style needs, and Lopez was not the one to go and try to brawl with.

I damn near jumped through the ceiling though, when Lopez went down.

It was definitely an exciting fight.

  • Partenalga says:

Marquez will get KO’d too and you already know this!!!!

  • Arthur says:

Lopez is strong but watch the sequence of the “knockout”– he lands a ELBOW ofter the punch that starts to sends Concepcion going backwards.

  • Letsmakeithappen!!! says:

Lopez and Marquez has WAR written all over it. If Lopez develops a conscience for D he could be better then Tito. I guess the fact that he will stand up to the pain is a testament of his greatness. If he gets in there with a puncher (Gamboa) it could get uugly. Lopez is on the move.

  • THE GOLDEN FAN says:

@ t@e ka, the ref did not count in the second knockdown cause concepcion fell hard and ugly and then tried to get up and had no legs so even if he had counted it was an iminent stoppage.

@ Lebron, any fighter who gets hit on the chin can go down. Its how he responds to adversity what makes them great fighters.

Also marquez is a very hittable fighter so he better be ready to take Lopez best shots cause he will land them first.

  • haha says:

    ROFL, not a bad loss?

The guy got KTFO in less than 2 rounds!

  • Edwin says:

Oh my god! The fight could go either way.. Both guys have serious firepower,. Not a bad loss for conception, Nominated for best round of the year!.

  • chucky lnx says:

Lopez to be the best you have to beat the best yuorkis gamboa.stop running lopez

  • Punchy Potorff says:

Lopez vs. Marquez will be the REAL test. And BTW, it was NOT a demolition. Concepcion did some good work in there, and definitely tested Lopez alot. We’ll see what happens next time around. I say Marquez finds Lopez’ number, and wears him out.

  • SCOTTO says:

    LOPEZ THE NEXT BIG THING

  • deadscared says:

congrats juanma!!! you are a great fighter indeed. maybe you would want to face another asian in cris john…great match-up too!!

  • BigSlyNHS says:

@Joker C Why are you always hating on the puerto ricans!!!! He won fair and square and he is going to f#*k up Marquez also!!!!

  • lebron says:

poor showing for both fighters lopez lacks defense concepcion lacks brains and both have suspect chins.

  • LOLLER says:

Congrats to Juanma Lopez, the fight against Marquez should be a fine matchup, can’t wait for that.

  • t@e ka says:

The referee did not count on the 2nd knockdown, he stopped the fight. They are afraid that Lopez might hit the deck again by a lucky punch. Lets see on the Marquez fight if he has chin.. LOL
