Image: How come Concepcion got whipped so badly by Lopez?By Dave Lahr: Anytime you get a fighter that has been slaughtered as bad as Bernabe Concepcion (28-4-1, 15 KO’s) did last Saturday night by WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (29-0, 26 KO’s) you have to ask questions about what went wrong. After all, Concepcion was ranked in the top 10, groomed by Manny Pacquiao as a future champion and loved by his fellow countryman in the Philippines.

So what happened to Concepcion? Why was get immediately getting his head handed to him by Lopez as soon as the fight started? I’ve seen some slaughters before in my time, but they usually don’t start immediately like the way Concepcion’s was against Lopez. It was like Concepcion didn’t belong in the same ring with Lopez.

Look at how Concepcion’s eyes were closed in the photo. The guy looked like he was out cold for a brief moment. Lopez was really lighting to his backside. I just wonder why Concepcion was fool enough to bum rush Lopez from the get go. Who told Concepcion to do that?

I got to say that was a brilliant move on Concepcion’s part, about as good as good as when Ricky Hatton went right at Pacquiao last year in his knockout loss. I’ve seen the Lopez-Concepcion replay a couple of times now and I can’t figure this Concepcion guy out.

He came out at the start of the fight with the biggest smile on his face, looking like he had the fight in the bag. He should have been trembling. I mean, look at the guys that Concepcion had fought going into this fight. No one on his record even slightly could give Concepcion any preparation for a talented fighter like Lopez.

Instead of looking like the cat that ate the canary, Concepcion should have had his game face on and looked like a fighter with a plan instead a prayer. The way that Concepcion bum rushed Lopez, it was like he playing the lottery.

Okay, so after Concepcion got blasted to the canvas early in the 1st round, why did the dude try and slug with Lopez? Why didn’t Concepcion try to save his backside and at least move around a little, maybe throw a jab? It was almost as if he wanted to get beat. I couldn’t plan a more perfect fight in how to lose to Lopez if I tried.
