How can Pacquiao be fighting for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title when he’s not even ranked in the top 15?

By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao has pretty much everything going for him in his upcoming November 13th fight against Antonio Margarito – hand speed, power, movement, and better boxing skills. With all that going for him, why does Pacquiao need a 150 pound catch weight to fight Margarito? That’s four pounds under the 154 pound maximum weight for the junior middleweight division. Why does Pacquiao need a catch weight, and how is he allowed to fight for a title when he’s not going to be fighting at the full weight? But more importantly, how can Pacquiao be fighting for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title when he’s not even ranked in the top #15 in the division?
Suddenly, however, the WBO put Pacquiao at number #1, meaning that Cotto has no choice but to have his WBO title on the line for the fight. If Cotto refused, then he would have been stripped of his title and it would still be on the line for Pacquiao to fight for it. Pacquiao went on to stop Cotto in the 12th round to capture his WBO welterweight title. Now, Pacquiao is fighting for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title against Margarito, who is ranked #1 by the WBC. I don’t see Pacquiao’s name anywhere in the top 15 for the WBC or any of the other junior middleweight sanctioning bodies.
How, then, can Pacquiao be fighting for the vacant title when he’s not even ranked? Shouldn’t this fight really be between Margarito and someone like the number #2 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Saul Alvarez, or someone like Alfredo Angulo, Vanes Martirosyan or even Sergio Mora rather than Pacquiao. I honestly don’t know how a fighter like Pacquiao can be fighting for the vacant WBC title when he’s not even ranked in the division. How is that allowed?
I mean its one thing Pacquiao fighting for titles at catch weights instead of the maximum weight, but it’s a whole different kettle of fish when Pacquiao is allowed to fight for vacant titles when he’s not even ranked at all in the division. I know anything is possible, but there’s got to be some rules that keep fighters from doing this, because it’s not fair to the top contenders that are currently ranked in the top 15 in the junior middleweight division. Is it okay for Pacquiao just to leap frog over them and fight for the vacant title at a catch weight. In either case, I don’t think it’s fair.
I think if Pacquiao wants to fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title, he should be fighting at the full weight and he also should be ranked in the top 15. Somehow, I have a feeling the WBC will soon have Pacquiao ranked in the top 15 for the junior middleweight division, much in the same way that the WBO suddenly pushed Pacquiao out of nowhere to the number #1 spot in the welterweight division before his fight against Cotto last year.

@Curt, you are exactly right. Mosely also has heavy hands. He can Tee off on Pacquiao with the long arms that he has.
Pacquiao is extremely wide open and easy to hit. Roach knows that. They will not allow Manny to face even an old Mosely.
Mosley is slowing down no doubt but he will cause pac a lot more problems then he did against floyd if cotto and clottey were able to hit pac shane is faster then clottey and cotto plus I give him a lil more power then those 2 he can give pac trouble with pacs lack of defense..

mmm.. don’t know about mosley… Either way.. Pac will still get criticized because there are a lot of people out there that thinks Mosley is done and past his prime…
I would have preferred that fight though myself… just to see how much it would sell.. that’s all… but I do think Pac wins that.. Mosley is starting to slow down a bit now…

But as I also said.. don’t count on it.
I still think Manny should do the randomized testing against Margarito it would show he is really trying to make a fight with Floyd and also that he is clean it would only put him on a even field with marg being that marg has to come down in weight.. I would order the fight just to see how manny performs with the test in place plus I’m sure HBO would give them a 24/7 for the fight if they did the testing..

Not entirely true.. The big names (Pac and Mayweather) are at 147 but he knew he couldn’t have any 1 of them when he first came back.
Manny could only win with a move like that if he’s really concerned about the test fight somebody who has no chance marg might have had a chance at the full 154 but at 150 I doubt it.. His long lay off from the ring and him not going back to 147 told me he has weight issues especially with all the money fights at 147 why go to 154 other then he can’t make 147..

Good point, it´s worth a try against Margarito and that would give Manny a good trial run before fighting Floyd IF he gets by Antonio and IF a fight could get made with Floyd, definitely something to consider.
He fought clottey at the full weight as a test for fighting at the 147 limit so why not take the test all the way up until fight night against a lesser opponent?? Makes sense to me..
If Manny and Top Rank were really serious about fighting Floyd now or in the future then why not fight a lesser fighter (margarito) and take the randomized blood testing in that fight that way you can see if the testing will have a real affect on manny and at the same time it will help his ppv sales because a lot of fans are wondering if he’s clean or not so they will order the fight for that reason alone..

I have been saying all along that Pac is not afraid of Floyd and Floyd is not afraid of Pac but i think it has to do with politics in boxing. Pac fans also overlook the relationship that Floyd had with Arum . I have asked Pac fans to tell me why Pac at one time wanted to leave Arum with the blessings of Roach and i am still waiting for an answer.

- you are in a 125cc races.. you decided to go up to 250cc but you are still using a 125cc motorcycle
- you haven’t beaten everyone yet in the 125 races, but you have beaten a few good ones

ok take pbf name off it is still a long list. PBF has fought at 5 different weight class but you seem to focus on him not fighting a list of fighters at WW. he dominated 130 135 and 140. He fought the best at the time for the title Baldmoir. that all you can ask for. Then he just fought the best WW shane beside Manny. Fight the best before you move to another division. You must really didn’t look at the list. Manny entire career he has never fought the best fighters. Every fight has done this but Manny. Manny fought the best at 130 Barera Morrales and JMM they all happen to be mexican flat foot fighters. Just look at Manny career besides the three fighters I named all in the same weight class what other top fighter did he beat. He dodged all the fighters on the list I named. Here is the list again look at it. PBF has fought the best 130, 135 ,140 and 147 fighter during that era. Thats why he has fought more former or current champions than any other Champion in boxing

I really try to stay out of the politics of Boxing(sports period) because its to hard to keep up with and it always ends up being opinions and not very many facts! For some average Joe on the internet to call ROACH, PAC, ARUM, FLOYD, ELLERBE, ODLH, SCHAFER ect liars is crazy to me…if you’re not at the negotiating table, recieving phone calls from Golden Boy or Top Rank, apart or TEAM MAYWEATHER or PAC then everything we debate or agrue about is basically heresay. You can read all the articles you want but you’re still reading someone elses interputation of whats going on.
About PAC fighting for a vacant title…I agree that its BS just as I think its BS that MARG is getting a title shot after only one average fight in the division! Catchweights for titles is garbage..PERIOD!!!
FLOYD fought ODLH at the weight he was comfty at…neverminded what ODLH was coming in at as long as he made the weight. Pretty sure OSCAR out weighed FLOYD by like 15-20lbs. If you are fighting in a weight you don’t belong then that’s your own fault…you might get the win but not allowing people to fight at max weight is a weak move by TEAM PAC!!

Pacquiao did not invented catch weight. Hell, I’m sure he don’t even know what it means. Freddie roach is the guy. Why not go after Freddie roach instead of pacquiao.
Let me clear it up for everyone that hasn’t read everything I have posted:
1. I am a Pac fan (very obvious)
2. I do not have a problem with the catchweight as Marg is bigger but I do not think they should be fighting for a title
3. I will not pay for this fight
4. I have not called Mayweather anything, nor have I discredited him.
5. I do blame him for the fall of the fight because (and remember this is according to Mayweather himself) he is on vacation
6. I do believe that there was negotiations that occured
7. I can not prove that Pac agreed to everything.. and all I’m saying is that none of the Floyd fans can prove otherwise neither.. so stop accusing as I am not accusing Mayweather of ducking
8. If you have a problem with the title fight.. I agree as well.. but this is not Pac’s fault… scream at the WBC… it could be that Arum payed them (and we don’t have proof on this) but it is still the WBC’s fault for accepting payment if this was the case
9. For the people that think that Marg will be drained… snap out of it… Marg campaings a WW and SWW.. he is not getting drained PERIOD.
10. Although I’m not going to pay for this fight because I believe Marg doesn’t deserve a payday like this… I believe that this will be an awesome fight to watch…

If it’s vacant then it’s up for grab. The only rule is that fighters must weight in for that division, minimum/maximum who cares as long it’s within the middle weight range.

When the challange was issued Manny was a junior welter…but Shane said he would come down to 142 or 143…and he was still turned away. Mosley was a full blown welter. I have a slight problem with what Manny is doing…for one…When he challanged Cotto for his title, the champ shouldn’t have to do come down in weight or anything….He’s the champ. Especailly if the champ puts the time in and pays his dues..he shouldn’t have to bend over for somebody who wants his title. The only reason Cotto did this was because Arum was “probably” (I wasn’t there..just assuming) going to toss Cotto to the dogs if he didn’t fight at a catchweight.
At first Cotto was standing his ground, then he caved in for some reason. Then when he fought Yuri…it was at a full blown 154..no catchweight. How come there was no catchweight mentioned for that fight? There was not one word uttered about it. In all of Floyds fights, there were no catchweight. Floyd had to make weight in all of them…his opponents never had to come down in weight….In fact on fight night..they came into the ring heavier than Floyd.
When he fought Oscar, they tried to get the fight at 147, and they said no. So Floyd packed on three pounds and beat Oscar at his walking around weight. Oscar had no business taking that fight…he hadn’t been there in 9 years…it was just for the money so he got what he deserved. I don’t mind catchweights…but not a title. Although history has shown championship fights took place at catchweights…

i don’t get it why some people make catchweight an issue. when we say catchweight, two fighters meet at common weight where one has to go down and the other one has to go up. further still, it means that the catchweight is agreed upon by both of them knowing they can fight at that weight and will be fair for both. both fighters also have ample time to train and be able to adapt with that weight.
if the other fighter has to drain himself, therefore, the other one has to gain up weight in order that they meet the catchweight. aside from that, having catchweight are done only on boxers who have big difference in terms of weight.
so, why catchweight is an issue?

This fight is a farce anyway. The fact it is a 154 world title fight when neither are light middlewights, and the fight is at a catchweight makes it even more of a joke.
The WBC just lost ALL its credibilty and can no longer be seen as a serious organisation.
Margarito should be banned and pacquiao should have said no and chose a better opponant, even Berto would have done.

I´ve fought over 1200 fights on Mike Tyson´s punchout and have managed a Mike Tyson´s Punchout tournament in my grandma´s basement last year with a few other mates from my neighborhood so I feel pretty confident in my skills and experience to be able to make logical conclusions based on the information at hand.
