HBO holding December 11th for Khan’s next bout

By Sean McDaniel: HBO may not be interested in showing IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s next fight, but they certainly are to show WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s). Dan Rafael of ESPN reports that HBO has already set aside the December 11th date for the 23-year-old Khan’s next fight, which could very well end up being against WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Khan is interested in fighting the 36-year-old Marquez, and both HBO and Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes both Khan and Marquez, are eager to put this fight together. Marquez is reportedly interested in facing Khan, despite the fact that he turned down a fight with the bigger Khan earlier this year.

It seems that someone has convinced Marquez to take the fight with the former 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist from Britain. Marquez would have to move up in weight to the light welterweight division for him to fight Khan. Presumably, HBO will still be interested in showing Khan’s next fight if Juan Diaz ends up beating Marquez in their fight next week on July 31st. Diaz, 26, has lost three out of his last five bouts and it’s probably not nearly as interesting for HBO if he winds up as Khan’s next opponent, even though Diaz is an exciting fighter to watch when he has an opponent that is willing to trade with him.

Khan called out WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on Khan’s Twitter page, saying that he wants to fight him and that Khan would be talking to Golden Boy Promotions about having them try to set up the fight. However, Golden Boy likely won’t let Khan anywhere near the unbeaten Bradley right now, because he’s too dangerous and the fight won’t make the big money now that it will a little later on. Beating the older and smaller Marquez will help Khan a lot with the casual boxing fans, who won’t understand that Marquez is up there in age and doesn’t belong fighting in the light welterweight division.

Hopefully, Golden Boy starts matching Khan against some talented light welterweights after Khan gets by Marquez, because they could end up stunting Khan’s career if they continuously match him against weak punchers or older fighter. Khan will likely be in shock when the time comes for him to fight someone like Marcos Maidana, Devon Alexander, Victor Ortiz, and Bradley. It’s better to at least get Khan used to fighting quality fighters from the same division that he’s holding a title in. Khan hasn’t been in with a big puncher since he was stopped in the 1st round two years ago by Breidis Prescott.

@racist card not bein funny but how fights has Pacman, Bradley, Cotto, Alexander, Madaina, Guzman, Campbell, Mabuza, Olusegun and McCloskey had this year?

They have all fought once so far this year none of them will be fighing more than 1 more this year so what exactly is Khan doing wrong by having 2 fights this year if all them are aloud infact the only top 10 fighter in the light welterweight division that as fought twice already is Ortiz who will have 1 more fight this year.

  • Insider says:

For way too long as Khan being fighting boxers that are $hit and not worth giving him credit for but I can not say this no more if this fight takes place this is a perfect fight for him to prove his worth. Marquez is one hell of a fighter look in no way is he over the hill although people may suggest he in my eyes and many others beat Pacman not once but twice, Mayweather give him a bash though but thats a whole different story Floyds on another level to all boxers.

Khan if he wins which it wont be easy I can see him going places he’ll also have to cover up well cos Marquez can throw punches.

I want Khan to win though I am not a fan of his through him bein over protected but this fight could change my mind on him.

why is it ok for pacman and floyd to fight marques but it isnt for khan?marques is one tough motherf*r and hell put up a hell of a fight.people are underestimating him because of his age, fools.

plus marques is a bigger name ie more money.more credability.makes sense!

Everyone would like to see a Peters Klitschco fight.Someone will pick it up,or a pay per view event.I would like to see the Klit bros on the same card defending on the same night together,With a nother good bout to boot.

  • scotty1 says:

Money talks. JMM and Khan are both PPV fighters. I guess Tommy Hearns was a fraud because he fought lots of guys smaller than him. As long as you make the weight, thats all that counts.

  • dan27 says:

and oli you must have a hole in your head or something?

  • dan27 says:

amir is fighting the hardest fights in the light welterweight devision out of any one. you guys are jokers!

  • Oli says:

Dont expect Amir Khan to face any of the top light welters any time in the near future. Same old never ending story of fighting people he shouldnt really be fighting while avoiding those which he should.

The kids predictable career is an utter sharade. Amir Khan is the most protected fighter in world boxing and that is a fact he keeps confirming for us fight after fight after fight.

Hes a cherry glass coward he ISNT fighting anyone worthwhile..EVER

  • Tom C. says:

How would they sell a fight with Diaz who was beaten (twice imo) & even stunned against the feather-fists of Malignaggi, who Khan just demolished.
As for Marquez, he’s a great fighter but has admitted himself he’s uncomfortable with the extra weight and would be at an obvious age, size & speed disadvantage. Basically he’d be getting used to make Khan a big name.
Mayweather was coming off a long lay-off & used Marquez as a tune-up, plus it was Marquez who called Mayweather out. And Pacquiao fought Marquez in the lower weights before he was washed up or outside his comfort zone.

  • ashishwarrior says:

    what beto said

  • dan p says:

if marquez is good enough for floyd his good enough for khan.especially at 23 yrs old,it will be good experience for him.marquez maybe the smaller man but khan will learn a lot just from fighting him.good business b4 the real fights in the l/welter start next year.then everyone can judge him.

  • beto says:

Its time to give Maidana his mandatory challenge!!!

  • eddie_g says:

cuz kon is a nobody to deserve a shot with the best!!! let him fight his way up, starting with his madatory maidana…

  • Paulie says:

Khan will duck Maidana until he is striped of his title because he knows he would be knockedout in 3 rounds.

  • Paulie says:

Khan can win this fight i doubt Marquez can do very well at Light welterweight. But P4P Marquez would crush this bum easely.

  • kam. uk says:

Whys he fighting SMALLER men who he knows he’ll probaly beat and why did he lie after the malanaggi fight that he’ll fight Marcos maidana next. KHAN PICK ON SOMEONE YOUR OWN SIZE.

  • 49-4 says:
