Image: DeGale says he's "The best domestically" - NewsBy William Mackay: Former 2008 Olympic middleweight Gold Medalist James DeGale (7-0, 5 KO’s) already sees himself as the best fighter in the super middleweight division in the UK, saying in an article at Frankwarren.tv, “To be honest, I am the best domestically already…I know I can beat anyone out there at the minute domestically, and I will prove that by taking out whoever is put in front of me.” I’m sure that Britain’s George Groves (9-0, 7 KO’s) would likely have something to say about that, as he’s looked arguably better than DeGale during his short career.

DeGale, 24, two years older than the 22-year-old Groves, has shown problems with his defense and his lack of power since turning pro in 2009. Although DeGale is winning most of his fights by knockout, he’s getting the KO wins over lower B level opponents and hasn’t looked like a big puncher. But more worrisome than DeGale’s slapping type punches is his lack of defense. He gets hit way too often for his own good and has suffered puffiness around his face in some of his fights against the lower tiered fighters. That’s not a good sign, because DeGale should be totally dominating his opposition at this point but he’s not.

Groves, only 22, seems to be world’s ahead of the pace of the older DeGale, having recently stopping Charles Adamu in the 6th round to capture the Commonwealth super middleweight title on April 2010. Groves looked really powerful in that fight, showing big power to the head and body and looking really poised in getting the win. A fight between Groves and DeGale seems inevitable. It’s got to happen at some point in the future. Hopefully, it happens before someone else beats DeGale, because it would ruin what would be a huge fight between Groves and DeGale.
