Arum says it’s up to Pacquiao to decide who he wants to fight next – but is it?

By Chris Williams: In Friday night’s midnight conference call to the media by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum when asked by Greg Leon of Boxing Talk about who makes the decision about who Manny Pacquiao will be fighting next, Top Rank or Pacquiao, Arum said “It falls on Manny.” But does it really? I only see two names being offered up as opponents by Arum – Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito – and both of them coincidentally are members of Arum’s Top Rank stable of fighters.
Pacquiao has already beaten Cotto to a pulp. Does Pacquiao really want to fight Cotto again? Is that his idea? Doesn’t Pacquiao have any other ideas for opponents? Margarito is a polarizing figure right now because of the hand wrap issue, and can’t even fight in the U.S. Is Pacquiao okay with that? Pacquiao actually wants to fight Margarito in Mexico. Wouldn’t Pacquiao, if this is his own choice, prefer to fight someone in the United States, like Andre Berto, Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez?
Pacquiao hasn’t fought any of them before, and all of them have a valid boxing license to fight in the United States. And best of all, they are well liked by boxing fans. Wouldn’t one of them be a better choice than to fight Cotto again in a fight that few people want to see or have to travel to Mexico to fight a guy that many boxing fans aren’t happy with right now? I can understand Pacquiao fighting Margarito if he had his boxing license and all the controversy had mostly died down, but he doesn’t.
The fact of the matter is Margarito has only fought once since he served his year suspension, but he didn’t look all that good in his comeback fight against Roberto Garcia in May. Margarito won by a 10 round decision, but his old power wasn’t there for that fight .And Margarito still doesn’t have a boxing license. Why fight him. Is this really Pacquiao’s choice to pick?
I just find it really hard to believe that Pacquiao, with all the names that could be selected for opponents, is looking Cotto and Margarito. It makes me think it’s not really Pacquiao’s choice. Oh, I’m sure he can say no if he wants to, but I think he’s doing whatever is being told to him by Arum. Yeah, it’s Pacquiao’s choice but he’s probably going to do whatever Arum wants him to do in this case.

To the writer. Boxing is all about business and money, gentleman. Your article is one way of expressing your dislike of the Pacman, as usual. Pacman is justified if he fights Cotto for the 8th title or division. That is if personal choice, just like Floyde not liking to fight this year. There is money in the Cotto fight, as the Cotto fans will spend their PPV money to see him fight, no matter who his opponent is. Same thing with the Margarito fight. Mexican fights will get their PPVs, just to see the cheater fight. Also, if Pacman fight the cheater in Mexico, that is okay. He is not obliged to fight here in the US. Uncle Sam is too greedy in taking off 30% of his earnings, while in Mexico, Pac is not paying anything. The Mexicanos can get revenue with the business that Pac will generate or create in thisfight. So, it is all business and personal freedom of choice, Mr. Writer… just like Floyde not being interested to fight this year!

The province I was in, the stations did not air the ESPY awards. Maybe they showed excerpts on the Filipino Channel Patrol TV, after it was all over. All the provinces on different islands have independent cable stations all over the PI, just like here in the states. Cable channels in California are different from cable channels in New York. Maybe in Manila it was broadcast live, since that is the capital. The cable networks in the PI, are notorious for showing reruns. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the award show, or the replay, where I was. Believe me, I wanted to see the ESPY award show! I had absolutely no internet access till I returned home. That’s how I found out who the ESPY winners were. The saddest thing whitnessed, many Filipinos don’t have cable television, and still watch the outdated analog tv’s,
but at least they’re happy!

Manny will do whatever Bob Arum tells him to do, where his boxing career is concerned. Arum said, on his conference call, that he didn’t want guys like Bradley and Williams benefiting from the money he’s spent to build up his fighters, since those fighters aren’t PPV worthy. Granted, these fighters are not household names. But, why choose Cotto (again), Margarito (w/ his issues) as choices for Pac to fight? It’s simple…54%. Clottey had no following either…but, he and Manny amounted to 54%…to Arum. How obvious is this Flop Rank sham? Manny will be lucky to reach 700,000 PPV buys, at this point.
Mayweather aka KFC has now been exposed for what he really is. He will never outlive his fear of Pacman no matter who he fights next. He has now missed his chance to be one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Easy now, I placed all my votes for all top sports figures too! I’m in the U.S. I’ve visited the Philippines, and they didn’t air the ESPY awards there on any of the networks! Maybe whoever has a satelite direct feed, received the broadcast. Many are and were unaware of the ESPY awards there, just like many are unaware of the any sports cable awards from the Philippines. Unless of course, they have an internet access, this would be unknown to them as their sports award shows would be to you. This was in reference to who is more popular globaly between Manny & Floyd.

There is no ESPN channel in the Philippines, roger that. I was just in Afghanistan guess what, no ESPN channel there either. But I was able to type ESPN.com and go there and cast my vote. Also on several Philippine news sources online they proudly boasted that pac was up for that same reward on their sites as well. Lets not make excuses people. Keep it real tonight.

The ESPN ESPYs award is decided by the people, so that makes Floyd the peoples choice and champ 2007, 2008, and 2010. Pac got fighter of the decade, but who gave that to him, not the people. Few people on this site are agreeable of pac/Cotto or pac/Marg fight. I hope Arum will notice that and find other opponent outside Toprank. Berto is favorable. Arum make this one for me. It’s painfully obvious that Arum was more interested in getting into a public debate with Mayweather than actually putting the fight together. This was going to get him free publicity for Pacs next fight just like last time (with Clottey).
I am happy Mayweather was wise enough to stay well away from it. But on the other hand there is no such thing as bad news. So Arum will get a bit of mileage from this, but not as much, without Floyd.

I think as boxing fans we have a right to know what was in the contract, what were the contract terms?
