Ariza thinks Pacquiao-Margarito is a “Very good fight”

By Chris Williams: For what it’s worth, Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach for World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao thinks his November 13th fight against former two time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is a good fight. In an interview at Philboxing.com, Ariza says “It’s a very good fight.” Of course, it would be a shock if Ariza said it was a crummy fight, which is pretty much what the entire civilized boxing world is saying. Diehard fans of both Margarito and Pacquiao just love the fight, they say, but then again they probably would back Pacquiao even if he were fighting a 3rd tier fighter.

Ariza is very impressed with trainer Freddie Roach, saying “Watching him completely analyze an opponent, break them down finding his weaknesses, finding his habits and all that, I think it’s going to be an easy fight” [against Margarito]. Well, it doesn’t take a genius to see that Pacquiao has all the advantages in the Margarito fight, including a nice catch weight that will likely cause Margarito problems. Margarito has lost one out of his last two fights and looked horrible in both. The once big power that he used to possess is gone and now he looks like he’s trying to turn into a boxer to cover up for the loss of his power.

Ariza says “Manny hits a lot harder and is a lot faster than [Shane] Mosley. “ I don’t believe that. I think Pacquiao is faster than Mosley, but he doesn’t hit harder than him. I think Mosley hits a little harder, but he’s unable to throw as many punches as Pacquiao and he doesn’t have the same hand speed.

Anyone can predict the winner of the Pacquiao-Margarito fight. It doesn’t take Ariza to tell what is obvious to everyone. This is why boxing fans are so upset, because Bob Arum picked Margarito, a fighter that is nowhere the same class. Now Arum, and the HBO Pacquiao-Margarito 24/7 series has to hype the fight and try to make it so that people believe that it’s going to be a competitive fight , which it will not be.

I for one does not agree that a title between Manny and Margarito shall be on line…the catchweight is understandable, but putting the title on the line is a shame….I am a Filpino and very proud to have Manny as a countryman…he had accomplished so much that may not be surpassed at all…so what’s the point of putting the title on the line? If he gets it, it’s not worth it..more of a same than enhancing his legacy..

I think this all strategy from Arum. Because if you look at all of the welterweight fighters and all the way up, Manny has to be the smallest of the whole bunch. I can’t name right now , a current active welterweight fighter and up that is same or smaller than Manny. We all wanted Berto but I agree Manny has to assert himself to Arum and make sure he gets fight that will enhance his legacy not damage it. Arum right now is only thinking of dollar signs. And he wants his investment back from Margarito. However, if Manny were to give everyone no catchweight, he will end up being served to bigger fighters without catchweight if Manny decides to go up. The reason why they are instituting a catchweight, is due to Manny is severely an underdog from the get go physical wise. He barely makes 147. Some say he is really a natural super featherweight or lightweight. It is hard for him to keep weight. Margarito is more of natural light middleweight and middleweight than welterweight. Margarito has fought 8 times in the light middleweight division.

I so agree with your analogy. Arum could be putting Manny’s legacy on the backburner for the sake of making more money. I thought it was ridiculous when he said Berto or Williams had no following. What about Clottey? Clottey is the biggest nobody of them all. It is clear Arum is keeping the money to himself. Manny has to say something. I hate the criticism that Manny gets. But the catchweight, is necessary especially when your champion is the smallest fighter in his division and up. I don’t know any boxer who is smaller or the same size as Manny, in the welteweight or light middleweight division. Everyone practically towers him. They have height, reach and weight advantage. Manny could barely hit 147.

I just think this fight needs to be clear and transparent……for once…..for the sake of this sport.

It’s in some ways understandable Pacquiao demanding a catch-weight fight. Pac will be at a significant size disadvantage in height as Margarito is 5-11 (180cm) and Pac 5-6½ (169cm) but he is trying to take a title at junior middle! and making 150lbs wouldn’t be a great problem for Margarito, who was a welterweight as of his penultimate fight but if this fight happens no catch-weights.

A pure junior middleweight title fight has a maximum weight limit of 154lbs and no one can argue against this. Pacquiao is on a quest to win a title in an eighth weight class and I feel he should go about it the legit way. If this fight goes ahead at a catch-weight then it would lose some credibility as a result , just like the Cotto fight.

If Pac simply will not allow his opponents freedom of choice to weigh in up to the maximum limit then no title fight. I cannot understand how he gets away with such demands for title fights? P4P 1 does not mean you can alter the rules to suit you.

@TrueBoxingFan: Wrong! Chris Williams and David Lahr are not buddies, they are the same person. He goes by so many names. If you know how to identify a writer by the way he constructs his words, you’ll know. He is also Santiago.

  • The Valhalla Kid says:

@Mafia Wars: True, true. Margo is not over-the-hill like Mosley who ktfo of him, the washed out Mosley who Roach was so scared of.

  • Mafia Wars says:

If anyone wants to see a fight that was the most horrible match making and completely unfair, just watch Floyd vs Marquez. Not only Floyd didn’t make the agreed catchweight but Marquez was set up as the sacrificial lamb for Floyd who IS 2 WEIGHT CLASSES BIGGER, TALLER, AND HEAVIER. Marquez had no chance in this fight. Zero. At least Margo, is taller, longer reach, and heavier. And near the same age,, 32 years old to Manny’s 31 years old. He is not over the hill like Mosley.

  • True Boxing Fan says:

Chris Williams and David Lahr are butt buddies….

  • eddyboy says:

Bible boxer, what a load is nonsense with Mayweather ducking, if you were a boxing fan, you’d know that Mayweather is the best at the art. Also his last two fights he had, puts him clearly at the No.1 spot. Mr Arun is spoiling the game by playing his own fighters.

  • Brian says:

Man, I would have rather seen a fight with Pacquiao against one of Mexico’s living legends: Morales, Barrera or Marquez…Marquez especially. I personally think a fight with Marquez would be much more lucrative simply because Marquez is Mexico’s best, if not one of the best Mexican boxers. Pacquiao’s split decision victory was not very convincing to me and a lot of other fans (a lot of other fans believed that Marquez won the fight). Marquez is #4 on the pound-for-pound list. Now where does that leave Margarito? No wheres haha…

    TO EVERYONE
this fight will be a tough one for manny pacquiao for one reason and one reason only.. and that is BOB ARUM he will control how both fighters fight just like he did with the clottey fight.. this is the only way that pacquiao can save his career due to the poor choices of fights he has had margarito in exchange for a huge payday by his standards will comply with the wishes of BOB ARUM and so will manny they will purposely make it a close fight,in order to say everyone thought it would be a cake walk and it wasnt. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO RESSURECT MARGARITO AND MAKE PACQUIAO LOOK LIKE HE IS FIGHTING TOUGH FIGHTERS … YET WE ALL KNOW THE DEAL HAND PICKED FIGHTERS… IT’S THE ARUM WAY

  • tom britt says:

I THINK THIS GUY WANT TO KEEP HIS JOB.SO HE THINKS THE WAY ARUM TELLS HIM TO THINK.

  • superyoJC says:

well i think your article is bad. but i do like it because when fights comes truth will be there, and i would like to imagine all of your faces surprise by the results, wow, wow, wow, is hard to belived how low you place margarito, please take your feelings of revange to some where else, margarito is going to fight clean as he did always, and is goignt to shot your mouths once and for all, its a shame of you talking like that. margao if comes ready and hungrier that ever that i expect that , well is going to beat paquiao , i know that for sure, well i will enjoy that, because margo is been the victim of what his durty trainer and you the wrong media has been doing with, him completily disrespecting margos excelence.

time will tell that im right, and you will as every writer when they wrong go to the shadows and eat your own words.

  • Tijuas says:

Margarito doesn’t need no plaster he drop Garcia in the first round on he’s last figth.

  • marc x says:

i guarantee pacquiao hits harder than mosley… anyone who has taken the simplest of physics lessons knows that:

    power = force x velocity

if manny punches faster… chances are that he has more power behind his punches

  • Bible of Boxing says:

What else is he expected to say? He is part of the hype machine that is the Pacquiao team and will spew the party line. But the the fact is that this is still a joke! I can’t believe that the sanctioning bodies will allow this a 2nd time. I accepted the reason dor the catchweight vs Cotto because Manny was moving way up and may have been at a huge disadvantage. IMO it left a tainted smell on what Manny achieved.
Now I find it in poor taste that Arum is only selecting his own stable and now again going for a catchweight. Manny is my favourite fighter but if he can’t make it at 154 the rules sould not be amended for him to get a fake record. It is a farce!
Of course Margarito will agree because he is not a natural Jr Middle and besides, he has a chance to win while also getting his biggest ever payday. I have said it before, I am bigger fan of boxing than any boxer . I stopped being a huge fan of Floyd because of his avoiding top fighters. Now Manny is facing them but at catchweights? That is an unfair advantage.
Why not stay at wlter and meet Berto and the other top guys there? Or why not face Marquez to close that score? And didn’t people say he is avoiding Bradley and didn’t he just call out Manny? I am beginning to see that Manny and Arum are no different than Floyd. They do not have boxing and us fans as their primary interest. I wish no one watches this fight as it is another nail in the coffin of boxing if this goes through as a major PPV hit. It would show that we are condoning this type of injustice to boxing.
As far as I am concerned Manny is headed in the same self serving direction as Floyd if he allows Arum to do this. The fight alone is distatsteful and the catchweight makes it totally unpalatatble!

  • delpilar says:

margarito will lift mexico on his shoulders.

  • LMAO!!! says:

Pacquiao’s legacy has been somewhat tarnished in the last two fights. Clottey and Margarito are not what you call the best out there. It should be Paul Williams and Mayweather but we all know Roach would never let his fighter sign a deal to fight Williams.
