Abraham-Froch: Carl in a must win situation

By William Mackay: Former World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) has finally tasted defeat in losing to Mikkel Kessler in his last fight in the Super Six tournament on April 24th, in Herning, Denmark. With one win and one loss on his record in the Super Six tournament, Froch must win his next fight against the huge puncher Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) on October 2nd if he wants to make it into the semi finals of the Super Six tourney. Froch and Abraham will be fighting at the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, Principauté de Monaco, in Monaco.

This is the neutral venue that Froch has been craving for, as he feels that he should have won his last fight against Kessler. In an article by Steve Bunch at the Mirror.co.uk, Froch has this to say about his loss to Kessler: “I feel I was the victim of a home-town decision when I lost my WBC title and my unbeaten record to Mikkel Kessler in Denmark.” You got to feel for Froch. He really does seem to believe that he should have won the fight against Kessler, even though few boxing fans agree with him. This was Froch’s first defeat and it looks as if he’s taken it quite hard. Instead of thinking too much about how he should have won the fight, Froch needs to figure out why he lost it.

Whether the decision was right or wrong, the fact remains that Froch wasn’t busy enough during the middle rounds and hung back too long in many of the rounds, letting Kessler come to him instead of the opposite way around. Had Froch been just a little bit busier in the middle part of the fight, he probably would have won the bout. However, to really ensure that he got the win, Froch would have needed to have gone after Kessler for 12 rounds the same way he attacked Jean Pascal, Jermain Taylor and Dirrell. Froch’s aggression and pressure was missing in the Kessler fight. Froch could have made things much easier for the judges had he taken the fight to Kessler. That was no home town decision, as far as I could tell. Froch just looked tired and passive through much of the fight.

Abraham has crushing power, the kind that can change a fight in an instant. Froch is still going to have to go after Abraham and throw enough punches to win the fight. Abraham will be landing the harder shots, and unless Froch is able to throw and land a lot more punches than him, Abraham may be able to steal a lot of rounds with his late flurries and bone jarring punches. Judges react positively when they see a fighter getting his head spun around from big punches. Froch will have to try and be busy in the same way that Dirrell was against Abraham. However, Froch may find it hard getting out of the way of Abraham’s big shots the way that Dirrell did, mainly because of Froch’s poor defensive skills. He fights too much with his hands down by his waist and this enables his opponents to land easily. If Abraham lands his punches with any regularity, Froch will have big problems.

Froch had this to say about Abraham: “Abraham was coming back into his fight with Andre Dirrell before getting disqualified. I’ve looked Abraham in the eye and I can tell that he is ready for our fight, and fearless – that suites me.”

  • Paulie says:

Froch will go to the semifinals aslong as Dirrell losses to Ward. So this is no must win situation.

  • Donnie says:

both will be fighting with bad intentions.hello there jermane! I know both these guys ruined your night. But you started so well in both.I am sure you will pick AA .What happened to your night almost happened in the Derrell fight too.,But the slip and a anxious AA fouled out.we will never know what might have happened?Froch will have to box a bit against Arthur. And Show his worthyness to advance.

  • punisher says:

  • dave says:

it is a must win fight for froch because for me dirrells favourite to beat ward. dirrells in a must win fight wheras wards already through.

  • Pete says:

If Ward, Kessler and Abraham win… then Froch goes through to the semi final. So its not really a must win fight for him but it would help.

  • tom britt says:

Froch is a big question mark. Will he change up and protect his chin? Will he change his stance and position himself sidways to maximise his big reach advantage? Will he throw his power right hand or use it more like a threat then a weapon as in his last two fights? Take this to heart big guy: its the difference between a win or a loss.REMENBER YOU PAY YOUR TRAINER SO DO WHAT HE SAYS.

  • max power says:

lets stick to comparing apples to apples

AA kos froch easily with a royal flush…

  • Oli says:

Froch is in a must win situation??…..So is Abraham you tosspot

  • Insider says:

@John Late on in that fight before AA got dq he was really hurting on Dirrel and probs would of KO’d him for a win rather than a loss.

Yes AA was outboxed but look back on some of his fights he starts later in the fight Dirrel caused him problems but I feel he would KO’d Dirrell and won.

Froch lost against Dirrell and was outboxed yet Froch got the decision Froch also got outboxed by Kessler and deserved to lose.

Froch got outboxed by Taylor and got fortunate in last round and AA will KO him he’s got a bigger punch than all of these guys together.

Froch will be KO’d round 4 and will be caught show boating

  • MOO says:

Agreed froch is a tuff fight for any one. He may not do any one thing that is amazing, but the guy has serius heart and punching power. Still think he takes to manny punches and trades to much to beat abraham. Only way to beat AA is to stick and move like Dirrell was dooing. Froch doesnt stick and move. He sticks you then he sticks you again and again standing in there to take Abrahams money punches. Froch is great but just think he is all wrong for AA.

  • MOO says:

Agreed froch is to east to hit. Abraham is probably going to ko him. And AA is not an over rated puncher he KO’ed both Jermain Taylor and Andre Direll with 1 punch, albie a totaly illegal shot against direll he, they were both taken emediatly to the hospital. Not to mention he survived a fight with miranda with a broken jaw in the 4th and still went 12. This guy is exciting any way you wana slice it.

  • John says:

Froch showed he does have average defense when he fought Kessler. Abraham will lose. Abraham will be forced to exchange early and be busier (like against dirrell) because of the hard punches Froch will land, when that happens, expect a re-run of Pascal.vs.Froch. Froch to win by a K.O in the middle rounds!! Come on the Cobra!!

  • i love the peds says:

AA is an overrated puncher…who has he KO’D…..EXACTLY-NO-ONE!

  • tuv says:

how can you guys be serious, froch is easy to hit and cant hit hard. abraham is one of the hardest p4p punchers and has a great defence. froch will take to many shots and get ko’d mid to late rounds!

  • Cobra says:

    Misinformed title.

Ward beats Dirrell and Froch goes through. So hardly a must win situation.

  • dav says:

i dont think abraham’s power will bother froch much, this guy has some rock solid chin, just look at the shots from kessler he took, gonna be a good close fight i think, froch to win though

  • Jordan Stoddart says:

Tic tac toe, Abraham gotta go.
