Will Chavez Jr. fight Cotto or Sergio Martinez next?

By Jason Kim: Earlier tonight, number #1 WBC junior middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) won an impressive 12 round unanimous decision over middleweight John Duddy (29-2, 18 KO’s) at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas.

The win was particularly important because it sets the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. up with two possible fights against either WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez or World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum has been especially interested in matching him up with the 29-year-old Cotto, who just recently resurrected his sagging career with a 9th round TKO over Yuri Foreman on June 5th at Yankee Stadium.

Arum would like to match Chavez up with Cotto, and put fight in a stadium as well. One thing could get in the way of that bout taking place and that’s if the negotiations between Top Rank fighter Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. go nowhere. In that case, then Arum will likely pull Cotto out of his hat and substitute him in the place of Mayweather for a bout that will probably be taking place at the Cowboy Stadium.

Never mind the fact that Cotto was trounced by Pacquiao last year in November in a 12th round knockout. Arum simply doesn’t have any other top fighters in the welterweight class to put in with his other fighter Pacquiao right now. Chavez Jr. isn’t nearly popular enough, even with tonight’s win over Duddy, for Arum to match him up with Pacquiao.

If Cotto does get put in with Pacquiao, then Chavez still probably won’t be put in with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, despite the fact that tonight’s fight was for the WBC Silver middleweight crown and puts Chavez directly in line for a fight against Martinez.

Chavez looked good against Duddy, but he didn’t look nearly good enough to do anything but lose badly against a class fighter like Martinez. Arum has been bringing Chavez along slowly all these years, feeding him one B and C level fighter after another to build up his impressive record. Even tonight’s win over Duddy was more of the same in terms of Chavez fighting B level opposition.

However, Duddy at least was a good B class fighter instead of an average one. But if Arum was to put Chavez in with Martinez, he would clearly lose for the first time.

I don’t think that a lot of fans put a lot of emphasis on Chavez’s unbeaten record, because most of them probably have a good idea about who Chavez has built his record on. However, casual boxing fans, one that have little clue about boxing, will see that Chavez has a loss on his record and might be turned off. This is why it’s doubtful that Arum will put Chavez Jr. in with a fighter like Sergio Martinez, because he will lose that fight and lose badly to Martinez.

He’ll good money, but he’ll just the same and probably in humiliating fashion. Martinez has a way of making his opponents look bad, and against a green fighter like Chavez, Martinez would probably have a field day in beating him with glee.

As such, I see Chavez being matched against either Cotto or put in with more B class fighters. It’s probably Cotto or more B fighters. Martinez won’t or one of the other champions in the light middleweight or middleweight divisions won’t be an option.
