The Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations need to wrap up soon if they want to be able market the fight

By Chris Williams: With only five months away from the November fight month that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has designed for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao mega fight, this would be the perfect time for the negotiations to wrap up so that they ‘re management teams can start to market the fight properly. Five months to market the Mayweather-Pacquiao would be ideal, because there would be plenty of time to advertise and get the causal boxing fans interested in this fight in a huge way.

If the negotiations take longer and creep into July, August and September, it could really mess up the ability of Arum and Golden Boy Promotions to sell this fight. Of course, the fight will be hugely successful no matter what, but it will do so much better if they’re able to wrap up the negotiations five months before the fight date, so that they can start building up the momentum for this fight now.

As for the training for the bout, I think Mayweather can be ready for Pacquiao’s style almost immediately. Mayweather is a fighter that can adapt to any style on the fly and come up with a strategy to beat it. He doesn’t need three long months of hard training and strategy sessions to come up with a plan to beat Pacquiao.

Mayweather has such a brilliant boxing mind that he can come up with the perfect plan in an instant without needing a guru like trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao, however, is going to need at least three good months of training for him to have even a small chance of beating Mayweather. Roach has to come up with the perfect plan and Pacquiao has to follow it to the letter for Pacquiao to have a chance of beating Mayweather.

Floyd is just too hard to really train for and all the idea that Roach will likely have will probably involve things that Mayweather has already seen many times during his career. Roach will likely give Pacquiao instructions to bum rush Mayweather, throw a lot of right hooks and look to overwhelm him with punches once Manny traps Mayweather near the ropes. In other words, Roach will have Pacquiao do pretty much what he always does in his fights.

If it’s successful, Roach can glow about it afterwards and talk about how he came up with the perfect plan to beat Mayweather, when in all likelihood, it will be the same old thing that Pacquiao does every fight. Pacquiao needs to have more than a plan to beat Mayweather; He needs a lot of luck and he needs Mayweather to do something really stupid like try to fight on the ropes for extended periods of time and try to slug with Pacquiao.

If Manny can catch Mayweather with a big shot like Shane Mosley did in the 2nd round of their fight in May, then Pacquiao would have an excellent chance of stopping Mayweather. Pacquiao won’t run out of gas suddenly like Mosley did and if he does, Pacquiao is young enough to get his second wind almost immediately, unlike Mosley.

Excellent article. If Mayweather fights Manny like he did Mosley, my guess is that Mayweather with get KO’d in less than 6 rounds (and that’s a conservative guess). If he fights Manny like he did Marquez, he’ll win by unanimous decision, but it will definitely be harder ’cause Manny is young and has way more stamina than Mosley (38 years of age is old in boxing). Either way, it’ll be a great fight. Manny will want to entertain the crowd forcing Mayweather to fight instead of throwing combinations and running away (his specialty). Can’t wait for this fight to happen. If it doesn’t happen, it’ll be a major, major disappointment for the sport of boxing and its fans.

AT THE END OF THE DAY:

Pacquiao – congressman, multi$, FIGHTER OF THE YEAR, FIGHTER OF THE DECADE

Floyd – bitter, NO AWARD, bitter and his fans are the same … bitter …

JUST FIGHT on NOVEMBER … then … let’s see … ENOUGH SAID.

It’s funny how Flomos here are so brash about Floyd’s skill that they praise it so highly. Tell me, Flomos, if what’s you’re saying is true, how come Floyd Scaredweather is not accepting Pacquiao’s challenge? I find it hard to believe you guys when your idol is acting scared *chuckle chuckle*.

  • zorro says:

Floyd is scared obviously. He would never could find any sparring partner that could imitate Pacquiao. Floyd has never seen a boxer that’s so ambidextrous like Pacquiao. And with power on both fists, Floyd’s health is in danger. This is the reason why he is stalling in fighting Pacquiao. He knows it’s the end of his thrash-talking and arrogant ways! Bring a lot of hanky and Kleenex when you watch the fight, flomos. Hek hek hek.

  • zorro says:

Floyd girly pitty pat shots are all he could do to Manny – and of course running around like a headless chcken. Manny with his improved footwork would land shots from all weird angles that would throw Floyd’s plan out the window. And DOWN GOES FLOYD, AND THE CROWD WENT WILD, WHILE SHOUTING “DIE, YOU FLOYD!”

  • zorro says:

“Equal playing field” says FLoyd. Ha ha ha! What a wimp! You have the height and reach advantage, and you’re still looking for an “equal playing field.”??!! Ha ha ha! You are the most scared boxer in the history of boxing! And to think, there are lots of pea-brained people who fell for this. Ha ha ha.

  • Serious Beatdown says:

I am a fan of Pacquiao’s but I am slowly moving away from him. This topic of blood testing that Pac refuses is a concern for me. There is no way that a compromise can’t be made at 7 – 10 days. That is ample time to recover.

I am reading that this is the only remaining sticking point.

  • loomis says:

@oz your assesment of floyd will be history as of next week an announcement is imminent. pacman needs the 6 months to november to train for floyd, and he still wont beat floyd lol.

  • Oz says:

I respect both fighters inside of the ring, but it’s getting harder and harder to respect Floyd as a fighter or a pro athlete. He’s quickly going from a possible all time great to the joke of the sport. It’s easy to see through his insecurities and he shows great fear every time Pacquiao’s name is mentioned during an interview. All great fighters would relish the opportunity to prove themselves against an all time great like Pacquiao. Floyd’s downfall is his lack of courage and Pacquiao has become his Achille’s heal.

  • Manford says:

While everyone else is speculating on who would win between Floyd and Manny, there are those of us who realize that Manny has already won this fight. Floyd has no intention of facing a prime Manny Pacquiao and that’s something that Mayweather fans are going to have to come to terms with. This fight is not happening in November and will not happen until Floyd has decided that Manny has slowed down enough to no longer be a major threat. It’s also a major possibility that FLoyd will exit the sport until Manny retires permanantly. For those of you who say that Floyd would destroy Manny, think of this. If Floyd belived that himself, he would’ve done it earlier this year. Manny got inside of the Mayweather’s head (all 3 Mayweather’s are terrified of this little tazmanian devil). So before asking yourself who would win this fight, first ask yourself if Floyd even wants this fight. The evidence is overwhelming that he doesn’t want anything to do with it.

  • loomis says:

@making weight. you name me 1 unbeaten fighter in their prime that pac has beaten? repeat..unbeaten in their prime?

  • Phoocquiao says:

    Diego Corrales…

  • Makin' weight says:

Name me one fighter Mayweather fought that was all these things:

    1. world class;
    2. in his prime;
    3. similar size.

    Enlighten me

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ DMX..

Pac’s conditioning isn’t exactly an advantage for him more than it’s not a weakness. How many times does Roger say, “down the stretch” to Floyd? I’m saying that down the stretch, Pac will still be there.

Yeah, it is an uphill battle for Pac, but I feel that he has little things going for him. Floyd is the best counter puncher, but that’s largely due to his movement and how he controls distance. When FLoyd cannot control the distance, he can’t counter as effectively.

Hatton gave Floyd problems in this department as he closed in on Mayweather faster than Mayweather could react to it. It wasn’t until Floyd notice that Hatton was coming in face first ( and Hatton getting frustrated by the elbows and back turning) that Floyd took control of the fight.

Also, Pac has greatly improved his technique in the ring by making little adjustments to his style and approach. His skill are less obvious than Floyd’s so most people think that Pac hasn’t changed anything in his game, but he has.

Say what you want about Cotto, but he proved in his fight with Mosley and now Foreman (even though Foreman isn’t exactly elite) that he can box. Manny not only outboxed him but Cotto went on to say that Manny is one of the best ever. maybe Cotto was punch drunk?

I do realise that Pac will have to fight the perfect fight to beat FLoyd, but I think he can and will do it.

  • DMX says:

@Phooc, Ok I can see how that coulld keep your interest and feel that Pac could be competitive. I agree that Pac uses high intensity, volume, and conditioning.

However; you can nullify conditioning because Floyd is always highly conditioned. Pacquiao is as open as all outdoors when he throws punches, Floyd is the absolute best counter puncher there is today.

Physically it seems to be a huge uphill battle for Pacquiao. Even if they were even it would be hard to compete with Floyd.

I know Pacfans feel that Manny has the support of a higher power. I agree, it will take divine intervention for Manny to beat Mayweather.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Oh yeah,

except that Ali lost to Frazier and had problems with Norton. Even greats fighters face style that they don’t handle as easily.

Would you say that Marquez fights the same as Pacquiao? Would you say that he’s as effective at welter as Pacquiao? The answer to both questions is “No”. So saying that Floyd will win based on how he beat JMM is incorrect.

Mosley got old. Not to take away from FLoyd cause he did his thing. Whatever the reason though, Mosley decided to be a counter puncher against FLoyd. Didn’t work.

Honestly though, as “overrated” as people think Pac is, has Floyd ever faced anyone that has the combination of Pac’s speed, power, conditioning, and offensive tenacity? The same goes for Pac. He’s never faced a “Floyd Mayweather”.

Floyd has more obvious skill and he’s bigger so it makes sense that he’s the pick for this fight. Personally I don’t think we’ve seen all that Pac can do in that ring. Keep in mind he only recently (as in the last 5 years) started taking his boxing training seriously. He was fine being the guy who drank beer and fought with one hand while trying to be a governor in the Philippines.

Foot speed, leverage, movement, hand speed, power, proven chin, southpaw, Freddie Roach, are all thing Pac has going for him. It will be a harder fight for Pac, and that’s what makes it so interesting for me and I think a lot of people. People want to see what the little guy can do.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ DMX…

How is Manny gonna nullify Floyd’s obvious physical advantage. Well if it’s just a matter of reach and size, I suppose he’d do it the same way Leonard did it to Hearns. Mayweather is better technically so it probably won’t work as well for Pac as it did for Leonard. Point being, it’s not impossible.

Corley didn’t use a jab. He just let Floyd walk into his left hand. Which is odd because it took Floyd almost two-three rounds to stop walking into that punch. Normally he doesn’t let a person touch him that often. Obviously Corley was doing something that Floyd couldn’t adjust to until the later rounds when Corley got tired.

Now Corley isn’t exactly a short guy, but he’s not exactly an elite fighter either (He was the 5th or 6th welter at the time when Floyd fought him. Basically just below Clottey when he fought Pac).

  • Oh Yeah, Get Sum! says:

Simply put, Pac is too little. He will get bodied and pummeled like Shane, Marquez and the rest. Pac is simply being hyped up to be the next ‘great white hope’ but truth is every real fight fan knows that Floyd will win easily. Let’s just keep it real, like the days of Ali, every next fight was the ‘fighter’ but Ali destroyed and put them to shame, nothing new with this day/age/situation…. Floyd is on top and somebody has to be hyped so that fans keep interest, but the truth is Pac has no jab, shaky defense and is small. Shane was physically bigger than Floyd but Floyd was clearly the bigger and more dominating man in the ring, and if Floyd bodied Shane in such an easy way WTF you think he will do to somebody completely smaller like Pac? Remember Marquez, see how easily Floyd whooped him, it will be the exact same when he step in the ring with the lil man Pac, real talk.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Kray..

yeah, I’ve heard a lot about a “rehydration clause” in the DLH fight. Is there any actual proof of this? I would tend to believe this being how DLH didn’t get any weight back during fight night. What confuses me about it is…

    1) I find it hard to believe that DLH was that confident that he’d agree to something like that. He is Oscar De La Hoya so I don’t see him being at the mercy of Pac’s request at the negotiation table.

2)If said stipulation does exist, that means someone would have known about it. I’ve seen that fight hundreds of times and no one said anything about it. They (commentators) were surprised that DLH hadn’t blown up. So It makes me wonder why this info wouldn’t be released before the fight or at all.

As far as the Cotto fight, you can clearly tell that Cotto was heavier during fight time compared to how he looked during weigh ins.

  • DMX says:

@Krish, let’s remember my friend, Pacquiao gives up a 5″ reach DISADVANTAGE to Floyd Mayweather. Please share with me your principle as to how Manny will get even close enough to even touch Floyd?

Before you begin, let me remind you, Manny doesn’t have a jab, and throwing a high volume of punches will be Manny’s achilles heel with Floyd.

    Now begin…

  • Krish Nefty says:

Anyone who disagree with what I say is a moron who knows nothing about the boxing. Floyd is inferior compare to Pacquiao’s speed and power. Pacquiao will tagged that mofo right hooks and straight lefts. All of you say, Floyd is a defense wizard, guess what? You’ve got a guy punching 4 punches in less than a second, I don’t see Floyd, dodging doing that lame shoulder roll.. Whack!!!

Left shoulder up, Right chin exposed, Perfect for a southpaw. The only ones who think Floyd will win are his ‘bratha’s’ They know nothing about boxing. It’s like all the black people voted for Obama but know nothing about Obama’s social and campaign plans.. Ignorant retards with inferiority complex

  • KABITENYONG HARAGAN says:

@DMX, you don’t need to finish doctorate degree, learn or be the smartest human being on the face of the earth for a 1 minute learning of how to use yourself as a person, areal genuine person who knows how to help others. Manny Pacquiao’s educational background is not that important to all his fellow countrymen because they all know that Pacquiao is a true person and willing to help others. even here in the United States, hes’ doing it too and help who are in need regardless of color or ethnicity. criticize him as a boxer but outside of it would just not be fair.

  • KABITENYONG HARAGAN says:

@Mr. Romero, i want you to answer me honestly. for some reason, i try to evaluate yourself as a true human being and i can’t grasp a better word to describe it if there is still love remains in the corner of your heart. it is extremely hard to foresee your behavior psychologically and the words you always use on all comments against a person just happen to be a filipino boxer are absurdly boastful. have you been a happy person? it’s seemed you never enjoy such happiness in life that you found yourself hating someone else that haven’t done anything wrong to you. if it happen that most of his fans get in your nerve, then stop making comments that in turn will hurt your feelings. stop hating man. just wait for the two famous fighter face each other and what ever the result will be, and or it come to your favor, so be it. this sport and the fans should strictly observe also. have a good day and please stop hating. the world becomes smaller when hates overshadowed love which will lead to peace. we are all brothers and this is only sport that bridges us all in one.

  • Mayweather Senior says:

If Manny can catch Floyd with a big shot like Mosley…Blah Blah Blah..If pigs flew out of my ass we would have free bacon for a month too!

  • DMX says:

That’s funny. I am sure both sides will be happy when we sit down the night of the fight. Everyone watching will be short of breath!

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @DMX…

True. I wonder if the two fighters know the world that this drama has created. Someone made the comparison to the Biggie-Tupac “Rivalry”. Hopefully no one gets shot.

  • DMX says:

@Phooc, hey man, I know I get riled sometimes, but you know Pacquiao has got some fans that can just get you completely fired up! Its hard not to get caught up in the rif raf, but you have a gentleman’s agreement to stick to discussing skills!

  • Nate dizzle says:

Trust me. This fight has already been made. Just like the SSM fight. The reason is because they want to announce the fight after the Finals so they can get all the pub. But it doesnt help with the World Cup around. SSM fight wasnt annouced until the superbowl was over. Just how Money May did some pubbing during the Superbowl weekend. Trust me, Monday next week is when it will be annouced. Not this weekend because all news ends on sundays.

They need to stop giving these Pacmanians access to the internet. Too many capital letters and not enough customer service. I spent 3 hours on the phone with my computer manufacturer yesterday and all he could tell me was that Manny Paquiao was the best fighter and Floyd stinks. All these tech support ops are all in the Philipines and know nothing about boxing or even computers whatsoever. Capitalize THAT!

  • Oskie de Goya says:

We the Boxing Fans don’t really know if Mayweeder will fight Pacquiao but on the heart and mind of major American, Mexican and Filipino People like Hillary Clinton, Rocky Balboa, Oscar Dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Barack Obama, MANNY PACQUIAO IS A GREAT AND PROFESSIONAL BOXER.

MAYWEATHER TO SOME FANS IS A QUESTIONALBE GREAT (?) BOXER WHO IS ALWAYS THINKING OF BEING ADVANTAGES ON HIS OPPONENTS.

IN SHORT FLOYD IS A PERSON OF UNFAIR BOXING PRACTICES .

    Floyd need to CHANGE.

  • BP OIL says:

    @zdrx…That’s some funny sht!!!

The only strategy Pacquiao can have is to plan to take 4 in order to give 1 against Floyd! When Mayweathers’ jab is constantly in your face, its hard to do anything.

Manny’s face will quickly show the result.

Can Manny withstand an entire fight with the strategy of accepting that he will get hit 4 times and maybe hitting Mayweather 1 time, and missing most of the time?

    Could you?

  • Caesar says:

All in all…November will be “Come To Jesus” time.

In my humble Opinion, based on the skill sets of both fighters, there is no way that a fighter that is 5’6, with a 5″ reach Disadvantage, possesses NO JAB, IS extremely easy to hit, and has NEVER faced a boxer, is all of a sudden going to step up and beat the fastest, slickest, absolute best boxer on the planet!

I’m sorry Pacnuts, there is no way this can happen.

I know you think Manny will land that bomb that is equivalent to hitting the lottery. I guess that could happen. But I have been playing the lottery for 20 years, and haven’t hit it yet.

Don’t bet the farm on it… Manny will suffer a bloody, painful loss…IMHO.

@Anonymous ******* hatton didnt jump two weight classes. floyd fought hatton for his welterweight belt. and fought delahoya at 154 pounds his natural weight. delahoya weighed 18 pounds more then floyd fight night. and mosley was the #1 welterweight in the world when floyd fought him. #3 p4p in the world. over 2 million people didnt buy ppv because they thought floyd was going to have a easy win against delahoya. ***** wonder what your excuse will be when floyd destroys manny. it was the blood testing, he was too distracted with his political duties, it was roaches fault. floyd is always scared of someone then when he fights and beats that person there is an excuse for why he won. might as well put out your excuse for why he beat manny now dont wait till after the fight.

@Rob, well written my friend. Pactards have a very difficult time seeing that Pacquiao is getting “Pimped” to the Asians by Arum and Roach. They spent years building him up, and it will take this one fight that will send the little fella crashing down!!!

Pacquiao has been sheltered from all gifted, solid, technical boxers. I am not even going to say African Americans that dominate the sport.

This fight will be embarrassing, humiliating, and a big coming out exposure for the Filipino Idol.

PACQUIAO’S FANS WILL BE VERY HURT BY THIS DEVASTATING BEATING AND LOSS!

by CJ James Contributor Written on June 14, 2010 This is how boxing works. If you have a lot of fans, who buy a lot of magazines, and visit a lot of web sites, then the media just spends most of their time telling you how great he is.

    Please come back tomorrow.

You have entire web sites these days, like the Examiner.com, which are only in business as they’ve devoted their entire editorial to sucking the collective balls of Asia.

Even this site has a policy of promoting Pacquiao articles in this section. In the grand pursuit of reads.

The problem being, once you retire, and the bandwagon jumpers find another knock-out merchant to follow, you lose the hype, media cheerleading, and have to rely on what’s actually on your resume.

Pacquiao reminds me of Mike Tyson, in regards to legacy. We had 70 percent of the planet trying to ram “Mike is the greatest Heavyweight of all time” down our throats in the 1980s and early 1990s.

    The media. The fans. Everyone.

Only those who were real students of the sport, were thinking “yeah, but he’s never boxed Holyfield or Lewis yet, and will probably lose to both.”

Now he’s retired and the band-wagoners are gone, and the media are no longer in love with him, it’s just us and his resume.

    And it ain’t too pretty.

Honestly. I scratch my head reading coverage of Pacquiao. It’s Tyson all over again. Journalists with a gun to their head, chasing the all important fan reads.

When you actually look at the guy’s career, I can almost guarantee that the guy will lose at least 30 places on an All Time Great list as soon as he retires, and the casual fans move on to the next hero.

    Seriously. These things happen.

He won the WBC flyweight title. Made one defence, and then lost it to Singsurat. Did he go for a re-match? No, he just ducked the guy, and ran away.

He won the IBF Super-Bantamweight title, made one defense, and then lost again. I say lost, he was actually given one of the more sickeningly corrupt decisions I’ve ever seen in boxing.

He was actually down on all three cards at round five, with his face completely battered from numerous bombs he’d taken. The referee suddenly decides to deduct Sanchez TWO points in two consecutive rounds, bringing Pacquiao level. He then decides to stop it on cuts immediately, and announces it a draw.

He beats Barrera. I have no qualms about this bout. It was a good win.

In his very next bout, he faces Marquez. You won’t find a pundit or TV company in the world who didn’t give that bout to Marquez by at least two rounds. Most had him four rounds up.

Guess what. Another corrupt draw saves Pacquiao.

So let’s tally up the career so far. Every single title he was won so far, he’s either lost it in the very next defense or managed to hang on to it by being given a corrupt draw.

So Manny has managed to hold on to his title, by an Arum-decision, when he lost the bout by a long way. It doesn’t matter, because he gets schooled again two fights later by Morales and loses it again anyway!

Honestly. Manny Pacquiao’s career up until 2006 was just losing. Well, either losing to every top fighter he faced, or getting corrupt draws to save him.

So please, shut up about this “seven weight world champion” like he was a dominant fighter at the lower weights.

So what happens after he’s been schooled two times in his last three fights, against Marquez and Morales?

Well he refuses to re-match Marquez. He actually refuses to re-match Marquez for five years after the draw, as he knows the only chance he has is if the guy’s 34 years old, and has lost a bit.

Do you get that? After the Marquez draw he wouldn’t face him again for five years. Imagine if Mayweather did that after the questionable Castillo win?

Pacquiao originally doesn’t want to re-match Morales either, and doesn’t. Until the guy loses to journeyman Zaheer Rahman, by a long way.

So he re-matches an old Morales, coming off his big loss, and wins. Just look at the score cards by the way. Rahman beat Morales by on average, six rounds, on the score cards. On one card he won by eight. When the bout was stopped, Manny was only two rounds ahead of Morales.

What a legendary win. Doing worse than Zaheer Rahman.

Marquez, still chasing his rematch after three years, gets snubbed again for Morales. A guy who’d lost three of his last four fights, and who was obviously shot.

That doesn’t matter. Manny loves facing old names, coming off of losses.

Six months after Pacquiao beat him, the guy lost to David Diaz…Manny’s wins over Morales are sandwiched in between the guy losing to Zaheer Rahman and David Diaz.

Has to tell you everything about that. Just facing and old, shot name.

Next bout, an old shot Barrera has just been schooled by Marquez. Marquez won every round on one card.

So I’m guessing Pacquiao takes on Marquez?

Hell no! Barreras is an old, shot name, coming off a huge loss. Let’s face him instead. Marquez is still 33. He still might be dangerous.

Finally, five years after the original controversial draw, Pacquiao gives Marquez a rematch. Even though the guy has been divisional No. 2, and PFP top 10 for at least three years behind you.

What happens? He gets an even more corrupt decision to hang on to his belts. Does he re-match this one immediately? Hell no, he runs away again!

Honestly. Manny Pacquiao only faced four elite opponents at the lower weights. As in, peak-ish guys, who hadn’t just been beaten by a lesser fighter.

    Morales (first)—he lost

    Marquez (first)—he lost

    Barrera (first)—he won

    Marquez (second)—he lost.

He ducked re-matches against almost all of the guys he lost to at the lower weights. Including Marquez.

After being whupped by Marquez, Manny had no love. He was well exposed as a tough brawler, who came unstuck against quality, technical counter punchers.

So what did his people do? They do as all losing fighters do. Just move divisions, and hand pick more beatable opponents, to re-build the reputation.

First lightweight, where the PFP No. 2 criminally hand picks the worst world champion in the division.

He then moves to 147, and faces a guy who hadn’t even boxed there for 11 years, in a shot, Oscar de la Hoya. The Oscar de la Hoya who nearly got knocked out by Steve Forbes in his warmup for God’s sake!

Was facing an old, shot guy, who hadn’t made weight below 154 in 11 years easy enough?

Hell no. Let’s put in his contract that Oscar will have to pay fines for every pound he enters the ring over 147 as well. Make the guy have to box at the exact same weight as Pacquiao.

Oscar’s last in ring weight before Pacquiao = 168 pounds.

In ring versus Pacquiao = 147 pounds!

Next, hand picking Ricky Hatton over guys like Mosley, Williams, Bradley, and Marquez b because the guy was old, shot, and coming off a big loss. That and the fact that he nearly got knocked out in his bout with Juan Lazcano (a Mayweather sparring partner).

Another shot name, coming off a loss, hand picked for his style.

Next, exactly the same. An old, brawler, in Cotto, coming off a big loss. And he took this fight over the PFP No. 3 Shane Mosley!?

Shane turned up at the guy’s gym to get the fight. He said he’d box for 20 percent to make the bout happen.

The biggest bout in boxing at the time. Roach hand picks Cotto as, in his words: “It would be a boring fight with Mosley. He runs. Cotto comes to fight.”

Translated, Shane’s too slick for Pacquiao, and like Marquez, may beat him.

Let’s just look at the facts.

Pacquiao didn’t dominate at any lower weight. He lost at most of them. I’d argue that he wasn’t even the best 130 fighter when he was there. He either lost, or got very lucky in at least 50 percent of his big bouts there.

All he’s done since being taken to school by Marquez, is face easier opponents. Hand picked brawlers, without the skill or speed to cause him problems.

    Marquez. Ducked

    Mosley. Ducked

    Williams. No

    Bradley. No

Mayweather. He pulled out of it, and fought Clottey instead.

Nearly all of Pacquiao’s big wins are against old, shot names, coming off of losses. Guys who have already lost to Grade B opposition.

As soon as the bandwagon jumpers have moved on to their next guy, as soon as Pacquiao retires or loses, it will just be him, and his lousy resume.

  • oya oya says:

    @Caesar

Agreed, In the eyes of his fans Floyd at any point in that fight with Mosley was losing and it’s guaranteed that he will not lose because it’s a rigged fight in preparation for a big fight with Manny.
But now, Floyd is kind of unwilling to go ahead with the plan.

  • Caesar says:

Bri, the Pactards have no idea what is involved in the business of boxing.

    All they know is…PACYOW…PAYOW…PACYOW!!!!

  • Sean P says:

I disagree, You dont need to market a fight like this for very long, MAYWEATHER VS PACQUIAO markets itself mate!

  • bri says:

it took a while to set up mosley floyd fight with the money that was involved this fight is three times that so it will take a while. and you know manny and arum are always tough even with the little stuff. wont be announced b4 nba payoffs are done though. and please no excuses after this one

  • Caesar says:

@Oya, at what point did Floyd almost lose the fight with Shane? That comment alone tells me that you are a novice fan and have no idea about hitting and recouperation and winning.

Its obvious you are 12, direct your comments at others.

Pacquiao’s next fight after his loss to Mayweather will be a KO loss to Mosely!!!

Pacfans, you’ve all been fooled!!! Arum and Roach created Pacquiao to mindless Filipino’s that follow and have no idea how to lead. They knew that.

Your hearts will all be CRUSHED!!!

  • Caesar says:

Midgets…Get your Rosaries ready! You will need some deep therapy and hevy consolation.

Your idol will get beaten worse than any fighter in history in a major event.

Bob Arum and Freddie Roach built him up and SOLD HIM OUT!!!!

Pacquiao will look like an average fighter that has never had a bout before!!!!

Prepare yourselves midgets and other Pactards!!!

  • loomis says:

lets get pacman in with mosley and see if he can take shanes power shots. i know one thing pac wont dominate shane like cotto or clotty and shanes got a granite chin, so lets see if pacman has the henry hollicks to fight shane. roach likes fighters coming off a loss dont forget. lol

  • Jason says:

This writer is an idiot. Can you be on Floyd’s balls any harder?

  • oya oya says:

    @Caesar

Call it what you want, as long as you convince your idol Floyd to fight Manny. Or perhaps you don’t want him to fight Pacquiao?

As I said before, I will say it again, Floyd has a low confidence right now because Mosley just let him win…Floyd
almost lost that fight because Mosley hurt him..and for what-ever reason, Shame Mostly just stopped fighting to make Floyd look good.

So you’re saying that Floyd is up there with the all time greats, not even close, he is an all time pretender.

  • badboy says:

    at oya oya
    you are absolutely right.

i feel bad for floyd because he will be remembered as the “no gutts no glory”guy. he will hear this all day everyday for depriving us boxing fans of the biggest fight of the century. he will hear it 24/7 just like roberto duran and the famous “no mas”.

  • Caesar says:

@Oya and other Pacnuts, I wouldn’t consider Pacquiao a boxer. FYI, boxers are:

    1) Ali
    2) Sugar Ray Leonard
    3) Judah
    4) Mayweather
    4) Oscar De La Hoya

Does Pacquiao look like any of them? Hell No!!!

Pacquiao is a Slugger/Brawler facing the fastest, smartest, most intelligent boxer of our era.

Pacquiao will be an EASY fight for him. EASY WORK!!!

    Wait and see…

  • oya oya says:

It’s good that there are fanatical fans of Floyd believing in his invincibility and predicting an easy fight to beat Pacquiao..Floyd needs this to boost his confidence to accept the fight with Manny. His confidence and willingness to fight a good boxer like Pacquiao is at an all time low right now after Mosley let him win, he knows that, Mosley knows that and a few other people knows that..it’s difficult to pretend, because in the end, he will have to go up there in the ring, alone with the most feared fighter.

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Something is telling me that Floyd is giving Manny time to detox. They know Many will be on the other side of karma since in all his fights he has had an advantage. Time to pay the piper. Casual fans are giving Manny a chance which they should. Know this, Floyd will have murder on his mind against a guy who has held out on a drug test to show the world he’s clean. Manny could have been in the same position but since he and his team have taken so long to agree to a test that both parties are taking, they are hiding something. That’s ok because when he fights Floyd all the hype will be exposed. Crazy thing is this fight is going to happen. Arum is going to sell Manny out just like he did Cotto. LoL

  • Caesar says:

You will see Floyd throw 500 jabs!!! Pacquiao can’t handle that AT ALL!!! Pacquiao’s face will be gone within 6 rounds!!!

  • bri says:

no point in marketing now, world cup and nba finals going on. world cup might not mean much in u.s.a but in rest of the world everything stops. no one cares about anything else that is going on. better to wait till both are done b4 they start marketing.

  • Caesar says:

When I read the comments from Pacquiao fans, each of them thinks that Pacquiao’s power and overabundance of punches will be the deciding factor in defeating Mayweather.

Listen folks, it take a whole lot of tools to even have a chance facing Mayweather.

First; you need a jab. Pacquiao doesn’t have anything that looks even close to a jab.

Second; you need to be smart. Pacquiao has no idea what to do when his plan is failing. He just punches more.

Third, you need to be at least equal in height, and arm length. Pacquiao gives up 5″ IN ARM LENGTH!!! FIVE INCHES!!!

TO THE FASTEST FIGHTER ON THE PLANET? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Pacquiao will be forced to leaping and lunging and timing Floyd in order to hit him. Have you ever known anyone to time Floyd Mayweather and be successful?

Manny needs fighters to come straight at him, and technical fighters give him all sorts of problems. Floyd is everything Manny can’t handle.

All in all, rounds 1 and 2 will be fun. Rounds 3 through stoppage will be a slaughter. Pacquiao will NOT see round 12.

The short arms of Pacquiao will reach nothing but Floyds arms and hands just like Emanuelle Stewart said.

  • tru says:

That steroid taking midget will get his ass kicked.

  • James says:

He will tell him to use big left hands, not right hooks, as Floyd can shoulder roll the hooks, but finds it more difficult to block the punches coming from the back of the southpaw stance as the angle is completely different from anything an orthodox-stance fighter throws.

  • Foreal says:

Should Mosley have faught Magarito the ‘cement’ man, and checked his rappings after the fight?

  • Foreal says:

Floyd is in the fighting business. He makes money, and has made his name through fighting. How can a boxer of his calibre be scared of somebody who already has a dented record? There is proof that he can be beaten. Those that are still wondering why the testing..the reason is simple. Manny is a small frame boxer, who suddenly puts on muscle, move up the Divisions beating bigger guys than him. This does not mean that he is cheating, it raises concerns about the use of perfomance enhancing drugs. Unfortunately the only way to know is through testing, and if somebody recists a legitimate way to clear issues in all manner and deed, it raises further questions. Imagine if Manny had said..this is all nonsense, I will test and prove to you I am natural….there was not going to be any doubts. If Manny comes out clean, Floyd will just have to up his game, that is all. It is different to go into the ring with somebody you suspect of cheating and knowing he may not get tired because he is more of a cybog than a human being. Which ever you want to look at it, there just has to be a reasonable agreement and we will have this fight.

  • Eddie says:

    Chris Williams

    Thought provoking article.

Maybe Manny’s awesome power will be the deciding factor.

  • kevy kev says:

he wont even have a second wind becuz that steroids will be out of his system hahaha.

  • Jay says:

Money is your marketing for the fight. He’s the PPV king by attracting half the audience who want to watch a masterpiece of boxing, and the other half watches hoping he gets his ass beat. Love him or hate him, you gotta admit, he knows what he’s doing. And this whole drug test business will only increase the marketability of the fight.

  • austboxer says:

    You’re Joking…

Mayweather Doesnt like southpaws… thats the ultimate reason. plus the power , speed and endurance of Manny. Go figure it out… I’ll bet you if fight will happen, Mayweather will run and duck all night, if he decide to fight toe to toe with Manny he will not pass 10 rounds.
Floyd’s camp suspected Manny using PED. By this they cannot believe in his endurance and thus its beyond their expectation. What if Manny is clean? and its all natural…
Manny will have the advantage psychologically…
Because Mayweather Jr. will be mindfull of what Manny can do in the ring…LOL

  • Foreal says:

    @ garv
Boxing is not only about pounding opponents into pulp. Boxers’ styles make them make mistakes which make them get beat badly. Floyd does not present himself for pulping. Do you really think Manny would puld Floyd? If you do, you are more on your emotions than reality. Floyd does not engange senselessly, he uses pure boxing skills to win fights. There are boxers who made a name for themselves for being brutal and pressure fighters, Cotto, Harton are just two of such and they are a perfect receipe for pulping. Floyd is neither of these fighters, he is a true boxer that uses skill more than strength and skill wins over raw strangth. Ali Vs Foreman and recently, Calderon showed how boxing skills will prevail over sheer strength.

  • garv dogg says:

is mayw jr realy that good???? this fight if it goes a head should prove that. this fight needs no press these two men could fight in a bingo hall in back street peru and still sell it out to 100,000,000. what im surprised about is with the ease you all seem to think may jr is going to beat manny pacman. do you lot realy watch boxing are do you just listen to what may jr says about himself. in may jr last 3 fights he has won soundly on points but he hasnt harmered any of them fighters to a plup or caused them any serious damage, he never hurt mosley once.. he couldnt stop manuel marques.. he is a well skilled boxer without dout put who has he fought realy in the big picture?? he needs to beat manny to prove he is what he says he is…. and i dont think he has it in him, he have to stop pacman to win, and take that risk of getting knocked out.. get yor money on the hardhitting filopino….

  • artUro says:

do not understimate the power of pacs God , someone saidthat titanic wont sink and even Him cant sink it … repent !!!!!

  • Foreal says:

    @ gar 30

Are you sure Manny has agreed to the testing?…and do you believe Floyd would go into retirement again before beating Manny? Well, I don’t think so. Floyd knows how to get at people, especially his critics. he always has gotten to them one way or the other. I have not heard any news that manny is willing to take the drug tests without…but…but…only…The only problem I have notived so far is that most of the talk and the hype is based on rumors and third party information. I don’t really know if there is somebody who really knows if these guys are enganged in serious discussions about the fight yet. I am very optimistic, this fight will happen.

  • gar 30 says:

I dont think it will take long to sell out, but i do wounder if it’s going to happen after floyd said he was going to retire which i think he would be mad to do,manny’s agreed to the testing that floyd so desperately wanted “to clean up the sport of boxing” so what is it now? stop stalling and get the fight on.

  • Foreal says:

Chris, this fight needs no effort in marketing. Floyd has already done half the marketing on this bout. Floyd is a genious, he knows exactly what to do inside and outside of the ring. He leaves everybody guessing while he enjoys himself. It looks like Floyd never losses sleep over his opponents, when it is business time, he works like a machine in the gym and his discipline in training is well known. What are the chances that Manny beats Floyd?…..it is generally agreed that Manny will have to pull something out of the ordinary, even Manny’s camp have said so. Manny will have to hit Floyd more than he usualy gets hit…it is likely, but highly unlikely. Floyd can win with his usual boxing skills, he doesn’nt need the heavens to come down for him to win……simple!!!!
