Mayweather hopes to make $50 million for Pacquiao bout

By Eric Thomas: According to news from the Manilastandard, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is hoping to make as much as $50 million for his mega fight with World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, if the two fighters can agree to a contract for a bout that will likely take place in November. Writer Ronnie Nathanielsz says that sources are saying that Mayweather hopes to get $50 million, and Pacquiao less but near that amount. This would mean that Mayweather wants a bigger cut of the revenue but not probably not as large as some things that are being said about Mayweather wanting a 60-40 deal.
Those two fights appear to be the backup plan that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has for Manny to fight if the Mayweather fight can’t be put together. Mayweather made a reported $40 million for his last fight against Shane Mosley on May 1st. However, Mayweather was able to make that kind of big money because he took the lion’s share of the purse split. This is what makes the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight so tricky.
It’s not as an appealing fight for Mayweather unless he can do better than what he made in his last fight, which turned out to be an easy one. The Pacquiao bout could be a competitive one and Mayweather will likely get hit a lot even if everything goes well for him. But he’s going to probably want to make the big money for this fight and the only way he’s going to do better than last time is to get the bigger purse split. Mayweather can make big money in other fights just by giving himself a bigger cut than his eager opponents, who will gladly agree to it just to have the opportunity to get the biggest payday of their careers, fight Mayweather and get a lot of attention in the press.

well look at a common opponent for the two.. manny put cotto on the canvas more than once and won the match by tko… no knockdowns were scored during the mosley cotto fight plus shane lost…
im not interested in arguing the fact anymore, i think my original point was that, unlike mosley, when manny catches mayweather with a big punch its either gonna put him down or hes gonna follow it up with a big flurry… somethin a younger mosley coulda done
Mind games, all of this sh*t is only strategy, marketting and mind fighting strategy. Don’t worry, they will fight, twice, cause the hype is setting up to make double milking of all of us.
FMJ and Pac both want this fight. Their clans want it even more, all of them are after money and recognition.
The result of the fight is highly unpredictable. No matter who we favour to win, we all know that our fighter could be in serious trouble. That what makes it so important and exciting, any other fight these two could take will be 3rd class fight in our mind.
I’m not a fan of anyone, just love boxing. I’ll be happy to see it, no matter who wins, and I’ll be waiting for the re-match too.
My idea of the issue: Both will score knockdowns, Pac will be agressive and very active, Fmj more precise and very slick. If it goes to decision, half of the boxing fans will scream to robbery. If one is stopped, half of the boxing fans will say it was luck, or bad refferee decision.
No matter what, the table will be set up for more money in a rematch. Don’t make a heart attack hating the winner; Don’t bet the farm on this fight, just enjoy!
@Alan K – The problem is that you are into WHAT-IF and I’m into WHAT-IS. First of all, Clottey was thanking God when he got the call from Manny. The guy has, basically, lost all his big fights. And was coming off another loss. I like Clottey, as a fighter. But, he’s a B fighter, and certainly not a draw. If Manny did not know that, then Arum sure as hell did.
If Floyd said SSM was not a PPV attraction (and there’s truth to that, based on his PPV history)…then what do you think he thought Clottey was? For Floyd, that’s just bad business…plain and simple. But, it’s great business for Arum…get it?
This idea that Floyd needs to be measured by what he COULD have done against a relative unknown, is ridiculous, when you already have 3 fights against common, and well known opponents, you can measure them by (ODLH, Hatton, JMM). Floyd did better period.
Then you can compare Cotto and SSM if you want. But, even then Cotto has the support of an entire nation (PR) and is the biggest fighter in NY (the mecca of boxing). While SSM is known to the casual fan, but, has been a CAREER HBO fighter, with few PPV opportunites (because he is not as marketable). Yet, Floyd still outdoes Manny.
Man, like I said the WHAT-IS’S (not the WHAT-IF’S) tell it all. Floyd IS the bigger draw, here in the states. And the states is where Manny made his fortune, and does his business (of boxing), just like Floyd. However, just not as good as Floyd.

@mrRomero.. If Mayweather make more money. Then WHAT? DO you have a share? Whatever you guys keep on posting Pacquaio or Mayweather fans it’s still doesn’t make any difference with facts who’s a better boxer. The only way that will be proven is they face it on the square ring. But if the fight never happens then the Mayweather got more to loose than Pacquiao because Pacquiao already cemented his legacy. Just remember the BWAA voted for Pacquiao 2-1 against Mayweather as the boxer of the decade. Mayweather needs to fight Pacquiao to cement his legacy if he wins.
marc x – I’m sure you don’t believe it man. But, we’ve not seen SSM in with an opponent tailored for his style, after his loss, like Cotto has been. SSM can compete with or defeat ANY other fighter at 147, right now, IMO. They say the last thing to go is a fighter’s punch. Put any guy in front of SSM, at 147, who he can hit, and is not a more clever boxer (which he has always had problems with) and it’s lights out.
You say “mosley is not nearly as powerful as manny. true story”. But, what’s the basis? Just go to boxrec and it will tell the tale. I count about 20 KO’s (we are not talking TKO’s…KO’s) on SSM’s record. I count about 12 KO’s on Manny’s. You the do the math.
Look at a vid of greatest KO’s of these guys and you will see SSM’s are more abundant, and more brutal than Manny’s, overall. Not to mention, he’s faced better opposition.
Now, if you look at SSM’s record on boxrec. You will see that from Feb 1993 – Feb 1994, he fought 9x. Guess how he won all those? KO. I don’t even have to tell you that Manny has NEVER had a string of KO’s (or even TKO’s) like that.
And, you only have to look at how SSM cracked the ‘unbreakable’ chin of Margarito, to see that Manny has NEVER brutalized anyone, who’s that strong and that tough, like SSM did Margarito. Having a shot ODLH, quit on his stool, does not compare. KO’ing a deflated (meaning Floyd took the air/ego out him) Hatton (at 140) does not compare. Having the ref step in to stop the fight against a questionable Cotto, at a catchweight, does not compare. And promising to KO a stationary Clottey, but, not even coming close…does not compare.
Simply put…Manny is not as strong as SSM. He beats most guys, based on attrition, due to his work rate, and the fact he throws his power shots in bunches. He’s got good power…but, he ain’t SSM, in that area. This is where the hype gets out of hand, IMO.

@ Submariner: You forgot to mention that Pacquiao beat a better Hatton too. Floyd fought Hatton at a higher weight while Pacquiao fought hatton at his best natural weight – at 140 where he was undefeated. As for ODH, Pacquiao had to moved up two weight classes and had fought at 130 lbs just nine months prior. So, IMO, Pacquiao’s wins against the two or three, including JMM were more impressive than Floyd’s.
I agree Floyd fought a better version of odlh than pac, but neither of them fought him in his prime.. Even so, odlh gave Floyd a little trouble (though there is no arguing floyd’s victory) and manny made him look like the old, past his prime fighter that he was.. Similar to the mayweather mosley fight.. As for hatton you just can’t argue that hatton’s abilities diminished so much after only a year and 1 tko loss to a great fighter.. That’s just looking for any excuse possible to undermine manny’s win over him and even if u insist on that argument, well, that’s why manny knocked him out in 2…
Here are points that stink of bias: The same Floyd-haters who insist the Shane Mosley that showed up against Floyd was not the same Shane Mosley, are the same Pac-lovers who would not accept that the ODLH and Hatton Manny beat were no longer at the same ones.
The same Pac-lovers who say they over-estimated Mosley, are the same group of people who would not accept that almost everybody over estimated Dela Hoya going into his fight with Manny.
If you really think about the two fighter Manny and Floyd fought — ODLH and Hatton — Floyd beat the better versions of both.
Factor in that Floyd fought Dela Hoya on Oscar’s terms and at the weight the latter was more comfortable in, while Oscar was a skeleton of himself (Roach’s own admission) when he fought Pac, and a whole different view opens up.
On the same breath, Pac fought the better versions of JMM in both I an II. It can be argued that JMM was very much outweighed by Floyd. But in order to be fair, you have to admit how much Oscar outweighed Floyd when they fought.
Don’t cry about cherry-picking. There are valid arguments on both sides. Fair is fair. Pac-lovers are more biased. Which is a result of being fanatics. Whereas, more people of fair and unbiased opinion, favor Floyd. And this is not a slight to Pacquiao fans by any means, because that is the meaning of being ‘fanatics’.
I want to see Pacquiao win over Floyd, not due to anything but to my love for the underdogs, but I think it is a mountain to climb for Pac.
also, there is no arguing that manny beat clottey.. he threw 4 times as many punches and landed twice as many.. he coulda won that fight on style alone

i dont believe any of that. the ssm i saw against floyd was not the ssm ive come to know and love in the ring and i think his age and 16 month layoff had a lot to do with it. as for cotto, a lot of people believe he’s been looking very good lately, especially in his past fight against foreman. i’m with them. and mosley is not nearly as powerful as manny. true story.
I believe that both fighters should agree to 45-45 and the winner gets the remaining 10. That way the one that wins the fight will have the reason to be called P4P king. The boxing committee should step in and make the match and quiete letting the fighters dictate what drug tests are going to be used, what size of gloves are they going to use, and what’s the puirse going to be split at.

Why do we have all these insults here? Are these really Boxing Fans or worshippers of the Boxers? We must understand that the,theoretical inconsistencies aside, Boxing is meant to be a sport. In sport, lose or win , you must treat your opponent with respect. We have no reason being here if we have no understanding of this basic premise. The title of the “Best” cannot be won through insults or in Blogs in the internet. One thing for sure that this fight… will be among the greatest super fight that will ever be made, its like the fight of the super powers.
We will never see this fight if you guys keep on putting words in the mind of these two boxers. To know the best fighter is to see these two men in the ring. Money making will not prove the skills in boxing sport. Otherwise it will be called the Business Sport. Let us help to make this fight to come true by shutting t f up! I agree with the winner taking the 60 and 40 for the looser. Then if one thinks he can beat the other then he’s got nothing to worry about getting less paycheck.
@Marc – I think it’s unwise to ignore the Clottey fight. That fight was not irrelevant, in the least. From Manny’s appearance, he looked like he lost that fight. The Cotto fight tells another tale of course, of what happens to slower fighters who fight Manny’s type of fight.
As far as Cotto being greater than SSM, at this stage. That’s very debatable. SSM has taken less punishment than Cotto, even with the significant difference in age and rounds boxed. SSM has not fought yet, since the Floyd fight. So, we don’t know how he will look the next time out. I don’t think people want to give Floyd credit for shutting him down, the way he did. As far as SSM catching him. SSM still has some of the fastest hands in the sport. And, arguably, hits harder than any other WW. So, he had the ability to catch Floyd, who was in range, and being a bit too aggressive–than normal–at the time. But, once Floyd got the distance right, it was the end of the night for SSM. He already corrected that flaw, in the course of a round.
Anyway, Pac will not walk through Floyd, IMO. Floyd is stronger than people realize. He was matching SSM’s physicality. And he had SSM’s snapping back too. The man’s age can’t be used as an excuse for everything that happened that night. Pac will throw a lot of power punches. But, what if they don’t have the desired effect, when he can’t land them clean? What then? And what if he gets hit 2x as many times as Clottey hit him, with straight right hands jabs, will his eyes not bruise, perhaps even shut completely? I think they will, because, Floyd hits harder than people think, and is more accurate than everyone else.

also, in manny’s fight against clottey he was constantly throwing punches and when clottey would finally open up to throw a punch, manny would counter right back while clottey was still open… floyd is a great counter puncher but so is manny… they will both get hit, except manny will hit harder and is much more capable of taking big hits

honestly… manny’s numbers vs clottey are, in my opinion, completely irrelevant based on the fact that clottey stood there in a shell defense almost the entire fight and compubox doesnt count punches that land to the hands, arms, shoulders, etc. even though they still have an affect… imagine trying to hold your arms up to defend your face after taking hundreds of punches in these areas and then trying to throw punches of your own on top of that…
for these reasons i like to look at the pacquiao cotto fight and the mayweather mosley fight:
against cotto, manny threw 780 total punches landing 43% (560 of those power punches)
against mosley, mayweather threw 477 punches, landing 44% (267 of those power punches)
and let’s face it, there is no arguing the fact that cotto > mosley… especially at this stage in shane’s career
of course, mayweather has the best defense of any boxer that manny has ever fought but if a 38 year old mosley can catch him off guard within two rounds, what do you expect the best offensive fighter in the sport to do over a period of 12? i expect him to overwhelm floyd and catch him with many hard punches… floyd will eat canvas against manny, but im not saying he wont get back up when it happens… after all floyd is still an amazing athlete
as for pacquiao’s defense… i wouldnt know for sure because i havent and never plan to get in the ring with any of them… but from the looks of it cotto and clottey seem to be harder hitters than floyd mayweather… floyd will catch manny with some clean counters but if manny can eat the best of cotto and clottey’s punches, he wont have a problem with floyd’s… as for manny cutting easily that’s not true… the last time he was really cut bad I THINK was his first fight with morales and it was due to an accidental headbutt…

@Marc X- Very interesting numbers. Not certain how telling they are though. What were the connection percentages for both fighters and that of their opponents, in those fights? That will tell more.
I agree Manny’s work rate will keep Floyd busy. But, Manny gets hit a lot, and cuts and bruises rather easily. Clottey just showed that. Manny may have the energy to go 12 rounds. But, his face may not hold up for 10 rounds, against the most accurate counter puncher in the sport. Who also happens to have the best defense. The type of defense that, unlike Clottey’s, allows him to transition seamlessly from defense to offense or vice-versa. Which means he can hit his opponent more than they hit him, even when he throws less punches. Check the stats of Floyd against ODLH…threw about 100 less..landed about 80 more.
On paper, Floyd is superior…period. It’s what can possibly happen off paper, being that Manny is a special fighter, in his own right, that makes this anything more than a slaughter.

Who else do you know, who’s taken a 2 year layoff, from boxing, came back to the sport and dominated both the #2 and #3 P4P fighters in the world, one of whom was also the #1 ranked fighter in his division? Let me answer that for you. NOBODY.
Is this guy EVER in less than perfect shape, for ANY bout? Does he leave ANY doubt over who the winner is, against his opponents. Not at all. The one time anyone had doubts (against Castillo), he wasted no time in clearing up the matter. That’s the mark of a true BOXER…and competitor.
So dedicated is he to his craft, he sought to learn the BUSINESS of boxing, inside and out, instead of being led by the nose by shady promoters. His pedigree is that of an Olympian, who brought home the bronze, comes from a family of relatively successful boxers, trainers, etc. Has paved the way for others in the sport. Has broken a number of records. The man lives and breathes his craft. I could go on….
How can this man not be a BOXER? He is that in the truest sense of the word.

Why do we continue to use money earning as proof of who the better boxer is. I don’t care if Floyd makes more money since half of those people buying he’s fight just want to see him lose. Fine, he’s a good business man with great talent….But he is NOT a boxer. Doesn’t have the heart and love for the sport. He has incomparable dedication to his business of making money though being a great athlete in the sport of boxing.
Manny is a boxer…he respects the sport and loves pleasing the people. Manny is the Name in boxing. Worldwide Manny is well more known than mayweather.

Shane and Marquez were a bigger challenge than a beat down broken cotto. Look at cottos fight after margarcheato. He looked horrible against Clottey. Clottey couldn’t finish him so Manny did.
Listen I’m not hating on Pacquiao, I think he’s a great fighter. With greatness comes great scrutiny and criticism. My only problem is he’s not fighting guys coming off of sensational wins. He should’ve taken a fight with Shane. He opted for cotto who looked horrible in his last two fights leading up. Sure cotto edged Shane. But that was a very close fight. Judging by their styles Shane was winning because Cotto got on his bicycle once he took hard shots. Not normal for a cotto fight . He didn’t stand and bang with Shane like we were used to seeing.
PAC Arum and Roach didn’t want Shane cause they said he was too good @147. They thought they could make more money with cotto 2x as much.

@Alan K – Pacquiao may indeed have a bigger following outside the US. But, where is most of the money being made? In the US. Where has Pacquiao made his fame and wealth? The US. So, Pacquiao is subject to the same standards of measuring success as any other US fighter. This is not the Super Six.
Pacquiao may be FOTD, FOTY, have Nike sponsorships, have a larger following outside the US, etc. But, his contests have not generated the revenue–measured by US standards–that Floyd’s have. The numbers simply DO NOT LIE. Networks want to maxmize the revenue generation from these events. And Floyd has proven to help them do so, more than any other active fighter in the sport today. Pac is second. Cotto is probably third.
Or do a 50/45 split for mayweather. Leave the extra 5% to the winner. Essentially the winner will get what he wants. Let them earn the extra they think they deserve. Mayweathers numbers are slightly better than manny’s not enough for a 60:40. 60/40 is unreasonable.

Anyway, if there’s any truth to this, then Floyd has set a number of what he wants to make–50 million. He should ask for more against Manny, because he is supposedly a bigger threat than SSM. And Floyd made 40 million for that fight. So what’s the big deal? Manny will probably not make much less than that. All they have to do is work out the numbers, to get him to that figure.
Manny said he wanted this fight…he pursued it…now he’s letting money stand in the way. If he were making the money he made to fight Clottey, I could understand the argument. But, he will mostly likely triple that with Floyd. What’s the issue? The hardest part, the testing, is, presumably, out of the way. The rest was supposed to be easy. Floyd fans really underestimate Pacquiao. I watch all Mayweather fights including the time when he was young and playing for the olympics,the contreversial Castillo fight,and the Mosley fight. Pacquiao has more than just a chance to beat mayweather. His Long reach wont matter because pacquiao moves way too quick and closes and opens the gap way too fast for Floyd to counterpunch. Floyd is going to do much of the Promoting. He will play the role of Dark Vader and he will go on all the talks show and promote this fight.
He generates more PPV than Manny, almost doubling Manny’s numbers, so why not ask for the bigger cut.

Pacquiao doesn’t have to give in to Mayweather’s greed. He should stick to 50-50 or else both will have to fight 2-3 lesser fighters to make that kind of money. I think Pacquiao is willing to do that but would Mayweather be willing to do the same? He is older than Pacquiao and age could catch up with him and his marketability can easily go down fast with a loss. At least if he loses to Pacquiao, he can already retire with a lot of money. But if he fights somebody like say, Williams, Cotto or Berto, he could end up losing with a prize money of only $15-18 million but with a significantly less appeal to the fans and PPV in his next fights. So Mayweather better learn to control his greed and agree to a less than 60-40 split or else he could end up with significantly less.

Pacquiao-Cotto didn’t do 1.4 M… it just did 1.25 M it was May-Mos that did 1.4 M, plus Pac-Hatton only did 800k while May-Hatton did 920 K. Plus if you look there, May outsold Pacquiao in their early fights even though he was facing name fighters like Morales and Barrera. He also ousold Pacquiao in the MArquez and De La Hoya fights. May deserves a 52-48 to 55-45 advantage in the split. 60-40 is too much though.

Where else can Floyd earn 50 million in a fight (50:50 split) other than PAC. He might earn 50 million at 10:90 split with other fighers but the PPV would not even reach 700,000.

Pacquiao has a blueprint out on him! It’s called Juan Manuel Marquez fight 1 and 2. Ask Eric Moralles, He watched Pacquiao Marquez first fight 8 times before his first fight with Pacquiao. He was able to beat pacquiao because of it. The problem with Cotto, De La Hoya, and Hatton’s fights was they were shocked by Manny’s speed, Iron Chin, and Power. All Three of these guys dominated In thier own respected weights with power and ability to take a punch. Then here comes this little guy that they thought they could school. Amazingly Manny was stronger than all of them. The problem with that is Mayweather doesn’t have anything to prove when it comes to showing Manny he is stronger! It’s going to be a good fight but 5 months to train is too long for a fighter with Mayweather’s skill to train for. The only weakness to Mayweather is the old In-fighter(Castillo,Frazier,Chavez) vs the Out-Fighter (Mayweather,Ali,Taylor). If you look at De La Hoya’s fight with Mayweather, He changed his style from a Boxer/Puncher to An In-Fighter. Roach was De La Hoya’s coach also. This style is tough for most Out-fighter’s, even Mayweather. That will be Pacquiao’s only chance to beat Mayweather. By pressuring to the ropes while bobing and weaving with little punches being thrown until he presses him up against the ropes and you rip his body. That’s so far from Pacquiao’s style not to mention Pacquiao is the smaller guy. Mayweather had trouble with Castillo who weighed 10 pounds more than Mayweather the night of the fight. I don’t want to even guess how much De La Hoya weighed more than Mayweather the night of the fight.Pacquiao is a Boxer/Puncher. The old “rock, paper, scissors. In-fighter beats Out-fighter, Out-fighter beats Boxer/puncher, Boxer/Puncher beats In-fighter. Not to Mention Mayweather is probally one of the best Counter punchers in history due to his ability to not get hit. Meaning the more punches you throw the more he hits you. What style did Pacquioa struggle against Marquez (counter puncher). You do the math! That’s if you want to analize the fight. One thing that can’t be analized is heart. That same heart that Chavez Knocked Meldrick Taylor out with 10 seconds to go in the final round. That’s something that can’t be measured with Manny willing to take 5 punches to get one. If I know Freddy Roach, He will try to trap Mayweather into a good Punch. The same thing Mosley tried. Who are you picking?

However, against a fighter who is equal and even better than he is in all of the very same attributes that make Pacman such a good fighter…it is PBF’s fight to win. IN the words of Oscar (who fought both fighters) …and remember doesn’t really like PBF too much to begin with…”Easy”!

Lets give it a try…I have always admired Pacman since his fight with Barrero. It was so refreshing to see the passion in a young fighter like Pacman displayed against a smart and technically sound fighter like Barrero. Pacman is a great fighter period. The excitement buzz and passion he brings to a fight ..and lets not forget the huge “Heart” is what has catapulted Manny to the top of the boxing game today.
Yet, even with all these attributes Manny will not beat “Mayweather”. And we will see this fight make no mistake about it! Here are the reasons in order of importance:
1. Defensive brilliance.
2. Speed and all important “Timing”.
3. Boxing intelligence. (watch the Marquez fight again)
4. Ability to take a “bomb” actually two.. (The Mosley fight)
5. Strength (Mosley was shocked at the “strength of “Mayweather” ..he could not muscle “Floyd” around the ring… and Floyd stood toe to toe throughout the fight. Margarito could not do this against “Shane”).
6.Ability to adapt in the ring.
