Khan won’t be fighting in July, but could be facing Marquez next
By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) won’t be fighting on July 31st after all. The 23-year-old Khan was supposed to be fighting 38-year-old Joel Casamayor on that date in order for Khan to get in one last fight before Ramadan.
However, because the fight will conflict with the world cup competition, Khan’s promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions, want Khan to fight in November instead. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy, is hoping to put Khan in with Juan Manuel Marquez or the perhaps Juan Diaz, if he beats Marquez in their fight next month on July 31st.
Maidana would have a very real chance of knocking Khan out if he was to be matched against Khan, which is probably why he has been skipped over previously. In contrast, Marquez is more of a featherweight, who has moved up in weight in the late states of his career recently to lightweight. He doesn’t look nearly as good at that weight as he did at featherweight and super featherweight.
To ask Marquez to then come up in weight another division to face the much taller and faster Khan would be a huge advantage for Khan. It might not even be a fair fight because of the size advantage that Khan would have.
Incredibly, Schaefer was planning on ,making Khan’s July fight a pay-per-view bout, which is kind of shocking given that Khan has only fought once in the United States, beating the weak-punching Paulie Malignaggi. I think a fight with Khan as the headliner would do incredibly poor unless he was matched against a known star and I doubt Marquez would be enough of a star to make up for Khan’s still unknown status with casual boxing fans.
A bout between Khan and Casamayor would have probably been totally ignored by boxing fans on PPV, at least in the U.S. It might do well in England, but it would be asking a lot of fans to have to pay to see him fight the 38-year-old Casamayor, who hasn’t been all that active since being stopped by Marquez two years ago and who has fought most of his career until recently at the lower weights.
It’s disappointing that Khan is being steered into fights against smaller fighters rather than ones from his own weight class. Khan may build up a name by fighting the smaller guys and avoid getting knocked out again, but he could be badly exposed again when they finally do put him in with a good fighter from his own weight class, whenever that happens.
On Khan’s Twitter page, Khan said “Guys, Casamayor is one of four names, but if the fight did happen, and we get the date, don’t be surprised if it isn’t him. I have another name in the bag.” I can only assume that the other name is Marquez, since if it was Maidana, Khan would immediately start talking about it.
Again, I don’t think Khan’s management is going to get him anywhere near Maidana anytime soon, if ever. The guy hits too hard and smothers his opponents with his pressure. He gets in close and batters his opponents into submission.
Khan has no inside game whatsoever and would be a sitting duck for Maidana. Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, needs to try and teach him how to fight on the inside instead of just how to stick and move because Maidana will likely nullify Khan’s movement almost immediately and knock him cold in a round or two.

You may find a few that can carry thier weight 2 divisions higher ,but not too many of them.Unless they have superb punching power like Paquioa.another khan job in the works.Look for a fight with Dzanuzik or Cintron.20 + fights is enough experience.By then you should have tested the top, like Angulo,Oh! how about fighting him?
if khan vs marquez happens then im pretty marquez is just good as a stepping stone for the GBP pet boxer.
@ Whyte & Mackay
Alexander is the same age as Khan yet in his last fight knocked out Juan Urango, a known puncher (something Ricky Hatton didn’t manage to do!) Alexander will get in the ring with anybody no matter how hard they can punch whereas Khan was wiped out by the only puncher he fought and hasn’t been near one since. That is the reason Khan receives so much criticism. Don’t get me wrong, i take my hat off to anybody who steps inside a ring regardless of race etc but Khan really doesn’t help himself!
Khan was a lightweight not long ago, Marquez wants to move up to light welterweight. Khan just wanted to fight before Ramadan. Marquez is a hero of Khan’s and Khan would learn a lot from a fighter of Marquez’s calibre. Maidana etc are ducking him. Alexander is fighting next Kotelnik who hasn’t fought since Khan took his title from him. Why are there no articles critisising Alexander? Is it because he is American?
Is everybody going to ignore the fact that Alexander is fighting a hand picked opponent? Khan got the most unbeleivable amount of critisizm for fight Malignaggi but nobody is commenting on Alexander. Typical US editors being scared of somebody else from outside the US being any good. At least Khan is looking for world champs in other divisions, rather than fighting second tier fighters in the 140lbs. I would expect Victor Ortiz to be fighting Kotelnik to help build himself back up. Where is Maidana in all of this, he seems to want to enjoy the little limelight he’s getting. I would put my house on Khan, Bradley and Alexander all beating Maidana with ease.
JMM wasn’t “too small” for mayweather…
and he didnt look very good at the weight either did he genuis? otherwise why would khan want him. golden boy are ruining boxing
Didn’t Maidana admit that he wasn’t injured last week? How is Khan ducking him when Maidana claims to have an injury he doesn’t have?
Khan – Maidana would be an awesome fight, one classy boxer and one enormous puncher. Late grinding win for Khan I reckon, but with a constant possibility of a massive knockout for a Maidana win.
yeah guys…thats right: jmm is “too small”. even tho he has faced floyd mayweather jr at welterweight he is “too small” to fight at light-welterweight.
even tho he faced arguably the p4p no.1 floyd mayweather jr less than a year ago he is now “too old” to face a rookie champ with only 24 fights under his belt.
genius.
sorry but khan v marquez is not an exciting fight. freddie already predicted it would be barrera part two so why even bother.
please give us some decent fights golden boy because right now you are preventing all the good fights from happening. you should have put khan in with ortiz or maidana and because you havent i hope your american audience will have forgotten who khan is by the end of this year.
biggles, yes what kind of lame bullsh*te excuse is that about the ppv and the world cup. i think there’s something well dodgy about golden boy and khan. i hope everything gets exposed and the way they have treated marcos maidana.
“However, because the fight will conflict with the world cup competition,”
How? The world cup ends on July 11th.
KHAN AND MARQUEZ ARE A GOOD COMBINATION. EITHER ONE WILL BE KNOCKOUT. IT IS WORTH SEEING THIS FIGHT IF IT HAPPENS
@ Don
Amere Con lol… Its what he really is. JMM is a world legend. why should he move up in weight? Amere Con is just another boxing imposter.
Just like May chi ken.
I heard this fool is changing his name to’ Klu klux khan’?
Who would Khan fight right now at Light-Welterweight?
Bradley, Maidana and Alexander are unavailable, he’s beaten Malignaggi, Mayweather, Berto and Pacman are at welter, Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez are way too big and Ortiz is with the same promoter and they won’t get to fight until both have bigger names.
Khan has few options; Casemayor (old and past it), Katsidis (small but might be a good fight), Marquez (who no one laughed at Mayweather for fighting, and who is still p4p no3 in the world and Ring champion 1 division below Khan) or Prescott (dangerous but probably who I think he should fight, exorcise the ghost of his beating before).
Khan is 23 and has plenty of time to fight the best. If he wants to fight soon, can anyone name someone better for him to fight?
Why is it that the British allways talks about their own fighters. Khan is overrated look what happend against Presscott. He exposed Khan`s weak chin. Khan is gping to get knockedout by if he fights Maidana. A fight with Marquez i would see Khan win if it happends at Light-Welterweight but at lightweight it would be pretty close.
But not small for the so called greatest of all time mayweather but to small for a hyped up average cherry picker fighter
Marquez is a bit small don,t you think?
It’s was brilliant when marquez went two class weight above his weight to fight pb nobody dissed him so what ring if AK fights marquez who is 1 weightclass above marquez currently that makes him a fraud
isn’t Amere Con fighting at light welterweight now? doesn’t he wanna unify the titles? so maybe he should…….i dont know…fight light welterweights maybe? instead of making almost 40 yr olds move up in weight to fight him? No respect for Amere Con.
How can it be that he’s talking about Marquez when he’s fighting on July 31st you idiot :l
booooooooooo
Great, let’s get it on. AK vs JMM looks good to me.
