Does Cotto deserve a rematch with Pacquiao?

By Jason Kim: Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) is hoping to get a rematch with Manny Pacquiao if his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t take place. Cotto, 29, defeated Yuri Foreman on June 5th to capture the world Boxing Association junior middleweight title. This was certainly a good comeback fight for Cotto, because he had been taken apart by Pacquiao in a 12th round knockout loss in November of last year.
Cotto already has a loss to Margarito and it was a brutal defeat. If Cotto could step up to the plate, fight Margarito and prove that he’s good enough to beat him, then I would feel that Cotto somewhat deserved a rematch with Pacquiao. I still think Cotto would need at least two more wins over talented fighters before I think he would be truly deserving of a rematch with Pacquiao, because Foreman just doesn’t do it for me because he fights for the same promotional company, has no offense, no power and pretty much handicapped by his injury at the midpoint in the fight.
That win is tarnished in my view because of the injury. A win over Margarito would help a little, but not as much as you would think because Margarito hasn’t looked good in his last two fights against Shane Mosley and Ricardo Garcia. Margarito looks nothing like the same fighter he was back in 2008. Something seems to have changed with him after his win over Cotto.
I think the worse thing that could happen is Cotto being matched up against Pacquiao immediately with only the Foreman fight separating his loss to Pacquiao. It’s far too soon for Cotto and Pacquiao to fight again. If they fight now, it’s going to look like a money grab on their part by fighting so soon without any reason. If Cotto had least been competitive with Pacquiao then you could make a case for there needing to be a rematch. But the fight wasn’t even remotely competitive, which makes it seem so wrong to have a rematch now just so Pacquiao can try and win an 8th world title.
I don’t really care either way if Pacquiao wants to collect another trinket to put on his wall but it would be nice if he chose someone else rather than Cotto again. I still wouldn’t mind seeing Pacquiao face Cotto some day, but only after Cotto fights a handful of fighters and beats them. And I don’t want to see Cotto only fighting guys from his same promotional company while in the process of building up to a rematch with Pacquiao. That seems kind of weird and I just don’t trust those match-ups.

there’s no way tha pacman and roach would fight cotto at the full 154lb light middle weight limit even though they already have a belt for it that pac won in a catchweight of 150 weighing only 144 1/2 lbs! they’re gonna say well, that’ll be too heavy of a fight for manny! we only fight weakened fighters, remember? we only fight in catchweights weakening our opponents, draining them to death b4 we fight them! see we don’t fight guys in their correct and natural weight where they are strong and in good shape, we have to demand that they get out of shape first because manny might end up in the hospital!
I’m Cotto’s friend and after his losses he has become a little more cautiuos on his last fight’s. Cotto sells tickets anywhere he fights, and all this trash talking in the blog is BS. Let them fight who ever win , wins. That the Boxer who want it most be the best. In Boxing u now who’s the best fighting. Yuri Foreman had a 154 undefeated belt,right? Cotto got a shot and win. To easy, he didin’t fight no spare or something, he fought a Champ and won. In my world if u are a Champ u are a Champ, some Boxer challenges u, and u lose u lose just as simple as that. Let’s not unprofessional and give credit to Cotto, because he deserve’s it. Right now let’s what’s going happen. Cotto fights anybody, that’s a true Boxer and you all know that.
Nah! Im a firm believe that this time if Cotto Pac will meet again…it’s a toss up. But regardless if some will say that it will be the same…it doesnt matter, even if Pac has to flick Cotto’s ear to defeat him, so be it! WE JUST WANT THE 8TH BELT!

Cotto has gotten to where he is without an A+ or even C+ trainer. He has used heart and natural talent. Look, Pacman has had 3 loss and 2 draws mostly without Roach at his corner. Roach was able to bring Pacman to his current level with his hall of fame training. If you were to swap trainers throughout both of their careers, one could argue that Cotto would be undefeated and considered a P2P fighter. And, Pacman would most likely not be P2P today.
I think Cotto deserves a rematch with Pacman especially at a more natural weight and with Manny Steward at his corner. He should, however, take one more warm-up fight with Steward so he can continue to redefine Cotto’s skills and confidence.
The reason I believe Cotto deserves a rematch is because…
1. He fought at a 145Lb which was a disadvantage to him.
2. He had a rookie trainer which resulted in low quality sparring partners. Cotto has himself to blame for this. Steward will be a plus.
3. Watch the reply from the first fight and you will see the first 5 rounds were competitive. Cotto looked like he won the first rounds. His mistake was bad balance which resulted in flash knockdown and fighting to low. Given all that the fight still went 12 rounds.
Though he’s great in my eyes.
Nice article & can relate to your point of view. Though I believe Cotto does deserve a rematch with Manny I’d love to see him get more comfortable in that weight class. I’d like to see him & Stewart grow together. He looked alright for his first fight at 154 (though not in the best shape) his jab was good & he went to the body. His old style will come back with hopefully better movement, conditioning, & defense if he has time to let Stewart work with him. I’d also like to see him face AM before Manny. The reason AM hasn’t looked good after the fight is because his wraps were discovered. I don’t think personally AM should be aloud to fight anymore but its not my call obviously just an opinion. I think Cotto has always been far from shot just lacks the confidence & Stewart could be a big help especially with his Fathers passing. If could use all the adversity & get hungry again he can become a great fighter instead of just a good one.

Pac dominated Cotto and left no question as to who the better fighter is, so I don’t see any reason for the rematch. Mayweather doesn’t want to risk his undefeated record against Pac, so I think we can put that dream fight behind us. I would like to see Pac matched up against Sergio or Paul Williams…
Cotto VS Pac rematch?
When Cotto moved form 140 to 147 he improved, stamina & chin. He was just growing into his weight/age naturally.
The fight with Foreman Cotto looked healthy, the fight with Manny he looked like a swizzle stick.
A rematch at 154, yes. Anything less is pointless.
Margarito doesn’t deserved to step n the ring. But cotto need to fight this guy again. Cotto can beat this guy without his plaster.

But there some great fights for him at the light middle: Kermit Cintron, Saul Alvarez, Alfredo Angulo (i had him winning the cintron fight 116-114), Paul Williams, or a rematch with Antonio Margarito.
All of which are great pay-days. I would watch any of these fights, including a fight with Manny at 154.
If mayweather isn’t such a P*ssy, it would defenitely Manny Vs Floid.

Look my friend, Cotto doesn’t need to fight a hand full of fighters to prove himself, he has already fought the best and has never backed down from a challenge. your making all that margarito noise, but the cornball doesn’t even have a license yet. you might not be impressed by cotto’s win over foreman but I saw a refined, determined, and fresh cotto take on a smart, quick, and diffcult foreman. make no mistake Cotto is back on top of his game. he found new love in the sport again and I don’t see anyone putting a stop to his hunger anytime soon. Cotto is a warrior and I will be a loyal fan of his forever!!!

that alone says hes worth the rematch,never mind that when Manny beat him he had a catchweight,penalties for excess weight at weigh-in,no wada style testing and came off a gueling fight against Clottey(who headbutted and tried to brake Cottos arm)in which he could have stopped the fight early because a nasty gash opened up by a head butt and went on to win via scorecards.

Cotto is good but I think he can build up his reputation further by fighting other fighters besides PAC or even Plasterhand. People are still in doubt about his confidence and abilities. He didn’t prove anything at all by fighting and defeating Foreman. I think any B+ fighters could have beaten Foreman.

Cotto can’t beat Floyd? That’s the way you look at it and I respect your opinion. I heard that before when they said that Mosley was too fast for Cotto. You may be exactly right only when Floyd keeps on avoiding Cotto and the rest of the good fighters. Floyd was too fast for an old Mosley and faster and stronger against a small fighter like Juan Manuel Marquez.
I wouldn’t want Cotto to take a beating at the hands of the same fighter. Let Cotto fight Margarito first, then fight others, but not Pacquiao. Oh, no, no!

cotto definitely deserves a rematch with pacquiao. he has earned it. he is tough and does not give up. pacquiao was just too much for him. i still feel pacquiao will win. that’s just my opinion. cotto looked good against foreman, but he was tagged pretty hard a few times. the difference between foreman and pacquiao is their speed and the fact that pacquiao doesn’t stop. if he doesn’t, miguel will want to trade blows. that’s where cotto will make his mistake. maybe cotto should fight a couple more fights before pacquiao. since foreman got hurt, we really don’t know what would’ve happened. i’m sure cotto would’ve won, but he may not have won by a knockout. foreman looked a lot like cotto, a person not willing to give up.

Why is he a paper champion? Who is the lineal champion at JMW in your eyes right now, and why? Cotto won the belt from Foreman, who won it from Santos, who won it from Alcine. It was not a vacant belt that Cotto picked up willy nilly.
Are you using Ring Magazine to determine the lineal champions? Because, Cotto obviously possesses the WBA Jr. Middleweight belt. Here’s the Jr. Middleweight scenario…

Ring has Martinez, Cintron, and Angulo as the top 3 JMW’s. Meaning, in order to be the lineal champion in their eyes, those dudes need to fight and win. Cotto is #4, so is that what you mean?

Well i think that the win over foreman was a good fight for Cotto. Foreman might have gotten injured but that really would have never made a difference. Cotto won that fight with great footwork and boxing ability. I agree that he needs better opponents to face before Pac but I dont think that fight will happen anyways. Pac is more likely to retire by then. And as far as Margarito goes, he doesnt deserve the money that he’ll get from a Cotto fight. He disrespected the fighters and boxing period. A person like that shouldnt even be allowed to fight.
If Cotto wants it so badly, then by all means, sign the dotted line. (If it’s being offered.) it’s not the fight we all want to see but at this point, anything is possible.
I would really love to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao. Before the Mosley fight it was my opinion that Mayweather would have problems dealing with Pacquiao’s pressure style. However after I saw what Mayweather did to Mosley I have no doubt on a Mayweather win.

I’m a hardcore Boricua fan and I agree with you about not wanting to see Cotto vs Pacquiao so soon. He needs some time to improve with Steward and take other challenges before fighting someone as talented and gifted as Pacquiao.
