Did Mayweather finish Mosley?

By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. did a number on 38-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KOs) in their fight on May 1st, beating Shane worse than he had ever been beaten in his career. It wasn’t the first time that Mosley had lost a fight, of course. Mosley had already been beaten in the past by Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright, and some say Oscar De La Hoya in his second fight with Mosley.
The only thing I got out of the fight after the 2nd was an appreciation for Mayweather’s incredible boxing skills. He was like Picasso the way that he painted Mosley’s face with hooks, jabs and straight rights. It was a masterful performance. Since the defeat, there hasn’t been hardly a peep out of Mosley.
I’m not hearing anything from him and this just doesn’t seem natural for Mosley. He’s usually talking about his next planned fight and what he’s going to do in the future. I wonder if Mayweather’s win has got in Mosley’s head and is making him question himself and his ability. I wouldn’t be surprised. Mosley is going to be 39-years-old in September, and that is downright ancient for a welterweight.
Most fighters are well out of the game by that age. It’s a credit to Mosley’s good genes that he’s been able to carry on this long and still more or less be fighting at the top of his game. But you can’t ignore his age. Mosley looked great only a year ago in stopping Antonio Margarito in the 9th round of a one-sided fight in January 2009.
But Mosley looked nothing like the same fighter he was then in his fight with Mayweather. I’m not precisely sure it’s age or just the extreme talent of Mayweather that made Mosley look so horrible in that fight. It could be age. Some people age really well for a number of years but then suddenly they age like seven years in one year.
It can happen so fast. And when you see them, you notice how badly they look and how old they’ve gotten. It could be that Mosley aged dramatically in that one year off from boxing and we’re no longer seeing a young fighter.
I imagine that Mosley will come out of hiding sooner or later and announce what he’s going to do next. I’d like to see him fight WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto next. I think that would be a great fight. Berto is a good fighter, but clearly not in the same league as Mayweather. Mosley could give Berto a lot of problems if he can handle Berto’s hand speed and power. Just by staying close to him and fighting him on the inside, Mosley would have a real chance of reversing time.

Bottom line Mosley was way over trained! The long camp for Berto, and the short rest in between, before getting right back to work for Money was not enough! Not taking anything away from Floyd who fought a great fight!
@marc x – I read just fine. You should focus more on making a compelling argument. You say Manny is a totally different fighter now. I say he is not. And you give that as your reason for him not facing JMM, a third time. That is a cop out. Manny can still make 140, perhaps even 135 (or some catchweight in between). If the Mayweather fight doesn’t happen, this could be a viable option. Who would you rather see? Cotto, at a catchweight, as Manny’s next opponent? Because, that is what Top Rank, probably, has in store.
Mosley didn’t just stop punching after rd 2 for the hell of it…he was completely gassed..

It turned out to be, yet another, controversial decision. And again, many boxing writers, pundits, etc. had JMM winning the fight…AGAIN. Freddie Roach was not even convinced of the results of the first or the second bout with JMM.
Manny has NOT proven his superiority over JMM. And dragging him up to 147 to prove it will not be convincing either. You Pac fans have already used the “bloated feather-weight” excuse on Floyd. So, no double standards for the “FOTD”.

i dont blame you for thinking he deserves another shot at pacquiao because certainly does deserve it more than say cotto or clottey… i just dont feel it would be a fair fight for him especially since marquez has already made it clear he isnt ready for the welterweight division… and lets face it, the welterweight division is manny’s new home… the fight we wanna see is mayweather pacquiao and if not then that’s just too bad for the sport of boxing

JMM has been chasing Pac for a 3rd fight (even at his advanced age), and if anybody deserves a fight with Pac I believe it’s certainly JMM.
And I can only speak for myself, but if JMM does sign to fight Pac a 3rd time, then there should be NO EXCUSES (not weight, not age, nothing).

Well, that’s one school of thought (that Pac has improved dramatically since the 2nd fight with JMM). But, I think he also had improved BEFORE the 2nd fight with JMM (he had certainly improved his right hook – I believe they call it Manila Ice).
Anyway, Manny may have improved to the point that he could beat JMM convincingly, but that’s a maybe. It’s just speculation.

You’re missing my point. Manny has had TWO chances to prove his superiority to JMM, and he has hardly done that. So to say he would miraculously massacre him a 3rd time is a little baseless.
Also, yes it did make me happy that Floyd beat the 38 year old (after only 1 time of fighting him) because I won big money on the decision.

Yes, Manny has beaten JMM 1 out of 2 fights, but he beat him by 1 point basically (in 2 fights). Hardly the massacre of Cotto or Hatton or DLH.
If you ask me, he certainly has something to prove against JMM. I would much rather see a 3rd fight with JMM than a fight with Money May (at 135 or 140 though).

A lot of people are saying this – even Ryan Dunn which is sruprising to me. This is PURE speculation. How many times to Pac have to fight JMM for you to say they are equally matched? THEY HAVE FOUGHT TWICE ALREADY (4 years apart – and Pac is 4 or 5 years younger than JMM). If they fought again, that would make 3 attempts and JMM would still be 4 or 5 years older.
Would it make you happy if Pac FINALLY is able to demolish a 37 or 38 year old JMM after 3 attempts?

About your most recent comment, I can address most of it. Yes, Zab should have gotten a knockdown against Floyd, but Floyd was purposely fighting an aggressive fight. Against Mosley, the same thing, he was fighting an aggressive fight, and was caught with some good sneaky shots. Against Hatton, I’m not sure Floyd was EVER rocked (when he fell back against the ropes in the 2nd or 3rd round, and Merchant made that comment about Floyd’s athleticism being the only reason he stayed on his fee, I don’t think it was the result of a punch – I think their feet got tangled, but I could be wrong.
Against Pac, Floyd may change the gameplan and stay away. If he fights an aggressive fight, he may get hurt if he gets caught, but he probably won’t press the fight until he’s sure he can take Pac’s stuff.
pacquiao and JMM were also both lightweights at the time… in mayweathers case JMM was still a lightweight pretending to be a welterweight AND mayweather came in 2 pounds overweight lol… put JMM in the ring against pacquiao at welterweight and it would be a massacre… true story

To your earlier comment about Floyd not stopping JMM, neither could Manny (given two chances – and he cracked him well). You can’t use JMM as a barometer because NOBODY has been able to stop him.

marc x, I want to give you props by being so loyal to Manny, but honestly, are you so resolute that he will beat Mayweather? You justify your statements by saying that he throws volume at a higher connect percentage then Mayweather. That is a rediculous statement and I have no idea where you are getting your stats from. Mayweather has, by far, the most favorable punches landed/ punches recieved ratio since the inception of compubox.
I’ve contemplated how Manny should approach this fight, but Mayweather’s particular skill set seems far too overwhelming. He can’t outbox Mayweather, that’s a given. He doesn’t have the reach or skill for that. He can’t fight in the pocket with Mayweather since Mayweather is a technician in close quarters. The only way I forsee Manny winning is if he can out busy Mayweather, and be elusive enough to not take to many counters to the head. Stylistically, I believe that Manny will be countered to a unanimous decision victory for Mayweather. The question is not if, but how lopsided of a victory.
i did watch the fight and fair enough clottey was defensive minded the whole fight, but when clottey actualy did let punches go he was landing – mainly a few good right hands, but he was defintley scared of mannys power. and if ure sayn clottey is better than sugar ure crazy but i hope your talking about cotto and it debatable that he is better, mayweather to pick manny apart round by round exposing his lackluster defence

People are watching Floyd but based on a lot of these comments I don’t think they can understand what he does. For the casual fan of Manny they see a guy who knocks people down and lately out. That’s simple. Hit a guy enough times in the face he falls down, caveman style. With Floyd he doesn’t have a an offensive style. He fights the way you fight. Timing your punches to the point that all the punches in your arsenal even your straight left hand cannot be used because everytime you throw it, you either miss or get hit. Floyd never let’s up on you. As the fight progresses and you keep trying to do the same things you keep getting hit. Cotto=had his face smashed in by cheato, also, at catchweight for his belt. HattoN=already been KTFO by maywether. Floyds victory MORE IMPRESSIVE, as hatton not only never been ko’d, but never lost. Clottey=his corner was refused entry into country, had a LOCK SMITH as his trainer.

There are certainly very confusing theorists on this site. Sugar was dominated fullstop! That’s how bad Floyd is. He makes you look so ordinary that people like yourselves start all these shocking and un thinkable theories. People don’t get week by testing for drugs, the very old and the very yourng, the very sick still give blood for testing and it has never been kown to cause weakness, even those that donate blood, and I am one of them…I have never felt weak after a blood donation and these are significant amounts. How come Sugar himself has never complained about the tests?..and you guys are so wise…more wise than Mosley and all his camp?

The reasons for a fix fight arent totally crazy. Im not agreeing that it was, but the there are some theories that may have some ground. For one the number of people who would want to watch Money fight Pac are higher than that of those who want to watch a Mosely Pac fight, that being said, GBP know that. More interest, more money.

Styles makes fights, styles is like art work and art work changes and takes many different forms. Floyd has show his many diverse styles to adapt to overcome every fighter put before him. Pac doesn’t have styles, he has a style, one style, and he has not showed us anything different in all of his fights. Tyson had a style, get out there brawl, mix it up and knock you out. But when Tyson got in the ring with a Boxer, his style went out the window because he didn’t have the skill set to adapt and show a different face/style. That will be Pac downfall. Once he see that he can’t hit Floyd, he see Floyd hands are as fast as everybody who been in the ring with him is, Pac will try something different, he will actually try/be forced to box, and that he is not, a boxer and thats when the fight is officially over, Pac will then be completely out boxed by a man who has damn near perfected the art of boxing. I think Pac should fight and beat Cotto again, because Floyd will beat him badly like Shane and then everybody will definetly scream Pac could only beat dehydrated, coming off a loss, catch weight guys.
