Mitchell had problems while training for Katsidis bout

By Jason Kim: Previously undefeated lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell (31-1, 23 KO’s) appeared to go through hell in his training for his fight last weekend against Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KO’s). In an article at the Guardian.co.uk, Mitchell said “I’m angry now. I’m pissed off with myself at how it went. Five weeks ago I finished sparring and I was blowing out my backside after about six rounds. My trainer said, ‘What the f***’as wrong with you? You haven’t prepared for this fight. ‘If you’re rowing at home, it’s not really the way to prepare for a fight. But I’m all right now though. I still stayed at my mum’s house. The last thing I want to do be doing is chopping and changing from my flat and my mum’s. It’s one of those things. People don’t get to see fighters’ lives, what goes on behind closed doors.”

It sounds like Mitchell was having major difficulties while preparing for Katsidis. However, it’s hard to say if this is the reason for Mitchell’s loss to Katsidis. I mean Mitchell never got to the point where his stamina was in question because the fight ended in the 3re round when Katsidis stopped him with a series of hard left hooks while Mitchell was trapped against the ropes. The loss seemed to be more of a case of a mental mistake that Mitchell made by taking a risk and trying to slug with Katsidis and paying the price by getting hurt by one of his hard left hooks. It was a bad mistake on Mitchell’s part to try and slug with Katsidis, because he didn’t have the frame or the power to match the bigger Katsidis in that kind of a war.

But you can’t blame Mitchell for trying. He didn’t know at this point how good his chin was. Katsidis showed him that he needs to be more careful in the future when fighting and needs to adopt a different style of fighting if he wants to have success at lightweight. Mitchell perhaps needs to consider moving down in weight to the super featherweight division, because he seems kind of slender for a lightweight and could do better at super featherweight if he can make that weight.

Mitchell says “If I want to be the best world champion out there and be on top of my game, I have to do the likes of that. Train three months abroad. He’s [Katsidis] been done [defeated] fair and square twice as well. He’s been back from it and I’ll be back as well.” Mitchell is correct about Katsidis having been beaten twice, but he wasn’t totally destroyed the way that Mitchell was. Katsidis was stopped by Joel Casamayor in the 10th round in a fight that he was ahead of at the time of the stoppage and Katsidis’ other loss was a 12 round split decision to Juan Diaz. He wasn’t blown out of the water like Mitchell was last weekend.

Mitchell sounds like he is making excuses, but it is his career it his his life everybody has to make the best of there life, the criticism on this site is an evil disgrace
look at your own lives first don’t judge someone who clearly went in the ring to win but just did not bank on what he was to suffer. what matters now is what he makes of his career from now on. all fighters have suffered one thing or another in the ring.

  • jimmy says:

i thought katsidis would be to much for him when the fight was made and even with all the hype in the build up my feelings never changed .I know he as done himself no favours by bringing up his excuses after the fight but i give him credit for getting in the ring with a man like micheal cause you know what your getting with him a warrior from round 1 to 12 and it takes a brave man to get in the ring and try to compete with a man like that and now kevin can put this to experience for future fights and maybe be patient and pick his fights at world level instead of rushing in at the first smell of a title

    good look kevin
    well done micheal

  • Oli says:

Straight from the Ricky Hatton book of excuses

  • rey says:

a fews weeks heard on east side boxing Mitchell was a real fighter that manny was avoiding, did some utubeing he looked good, but now its seems manny would knock him out
and beat him to the punch every time, and nate and paullie both calling out pacman also
would have no answer for pacman over 1,000 punches a fight. this was a very interesting week.

  • jsmk1uk says:

Mitchell is a good fighter, just because he got stopped does not mean hes not a good boxer, no matter what anyone says he has a good chin because he did not touch down after being hit by them bombs from katsidis, i think he would have won the fight if he didnt get into a war with him, he went in there with prescott who in my eyes is a bigger banger then katsidis and still won the fight.anyways good luck to him and hopefully he will learn and come back stronger, ps give him credit because he doesnt avoid anyone.

  • Dom says:

Kev you got sparked out mate by a brilliant fighter in Katsidis . . .No excuses.

  • grebo says:

That katsidas is one to watch for the future. He looks a fresh 29 and I would love to see him fight khan. Khan would have is hands full. Khan to me diddnt look as great as people are saying. Victor Ortiz looked allot better

  • Shadow says:

    Excuses, excuses…

  • jase t(england) says:

you aussies should be very proud of katsidis.a special fighter and a gentleman afterwards.cant wait for his next fight.

  • JUDGE says:

MITCHELL GOT TOO DRAWN INTO COMMENTS LIKE “MITCHEL IS A RUNNER”. I’ED SAY MITCHEL IS AN IDIOT FOR LETTING COMMENTS LIKE THAT GET TO HIM. MITCHEL ISN’T TOUGH, BUT HE IS A GOOD ‘BOXER’, HE COULD OF QUITE EASILY OUTBOXED KATSIDIS IF HE RAN LIKE HE DID WITH PRESCOTT – AND THIS IS NOT ANYTHING TO BE EMBARASSED ABOUT – JUST LOOK AT WHERE THAT GOT MAYWEATHER.
IF HE WANTS TO SUCCEED – 1) DON’T LET THOSE COMMENTS OVERRIDE YOUR HEAD. 2)DEDICATION.
WHAT “BIGGLES” SAID BELOW IS 100% TRUE, IF YOU CAN’T LOCK YOURSELF UP FOR 3 MONTH FOR A FIGHT, THEN FIND ANOTHER CAREER, JUST LOOK AT KHAN, IF HE CAN DO IT SO CAN MITCHELL. KHAN DOESN’T GIVE A SH*T ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE COMMENT ABOUT HOW HE FIGHTS OR HIS ‘HAND PICKED’ OPPONENTS – THAT’S HOW HE IS EARNING THE MONEY.

ANDRE MONURTON: YOU SEEM TO THINK ALL BRITISH FIGHTERS ARE ARROGANT. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONFIDENCE, ARROGANCE AND PUBLIC DISPLAY TO BOOST YOUR PPV. THEY DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO AS PER THEIR MARKETING STRATEGY DEFINED BY THEOR PROMOTORS. MITCHELS MOUTH GOT HIM A LITTLE MORE PROMINENCE THAN THE LAST FIGHT – SHAME HE LOST.

  • suntellmoe says:

    lol..excuses…

  • reb says:

the truth is he loss and thats all. no alliby for him….

  • stu says:

no excuses kev. you got beat fair & square.

  • loomis says:

mitchell was talking about fighting the winner of khan paulie before he fought katsidas giving total disregard for katsidas.the writers correct, mitchell maybe needs to drop down a weight and try sf the lw is too hot for mitchell right now.

  • unique says:

frank warran said he dont like financing b ums lol, but however he carried on with khan knowing he will be a champion even after prescott………and today he is a champ lol

  • from the Ring Magazine says:

Here is a well-written excerpt from the Ring Magazine.

“Kevin Mitchell: The Londoner obviously was embarrassed that Australian Michael Katsidis whacked him out in three rounds in front of the home fans, feelings that are understandable. However, he made a mistake by letting the excuses fly afterward. He said that training didn’t go well, that he had some late nights and that other “rows” contributed to his difficulties in the ring. Here’s the reality: He got his ass kicked by a better fighter. Every fighter who loses can come up with a plausible excuse. The most-sportsmanlike among them keep such thoughts to themselves and give their opponents credit, as Malignaggi did.”

  • afr says:

    wot a fraud

  • biggles says:

excuses, excuses. This type of training camp may be alright for domestic level, but not world title level. You need to lock yourself away for 3 months with no distractions.

I remember Naz saying once that the reason he stopped early was that he didn’t have the motivation anymore to go off to camp for three months at a time as he missed his family and young children.

This is the type of sacrifice you need to make when competing at top level. Like Naz, if you are not motivated to do so, get out of the game.

  • The Northfleet mauler says:

To Whinging pom. It’s true that Mitchell got found out by a good man in Katsidis, although to be fair, there’s no shame in that. What others fighters do Australia have that are any good? Green and who? Also I would like to point out that without Britain and colonisation your main sport would be boomarang throwing you numpty. Unlucky in the twenty 20 sport.

  • Mutchie says:

I believe Katsidis will allways be to good for Mitchell !!

  • billyboy! says:

Mitchell was an idiot,no guard no head movement, shouldve done wat he was doin in the first 2 rounds! His chin got exposed for the first time in his career. If he wants to challenge 4 a world title he’ll have to get his tactics right! But he is still young and should come back fro this…..up the daggers

  • Hudson says:

Mitchell lacked physical hardness and toughness. He should look to Kat and try to replicate his workrate and hardness. He is too slender and lacks strength to match the elite.

He needs to learn to speak English as well.

  • Vinny says:

    @??

    LOL, “…he took a dump 5 weeks ago?…”

  • Johnny says:

Every interview I see this Mitchell with the same annoying angry face…Not only he can’t fight but he can’t smile!!

Im glad Katboy showed him how to eat some humble pie!!

  • ?? says:

    …………..
I don’t understand this excuse. What is he saying?
And is he saying he took a dump 5 weeks ago? What does that have to do with losing?
    I don’t understand this excuse.

  • Dino says:

Not only Mitchell can’t fight at top level, he can’t even speak proper English…honestly, Mitchell go back to little school and learn to pronounce words!!

Mitchell is truly a disgrace to the UK and should banned from talking, let alone fighting.

  • delBoy says:

It’s only one loss?? The manner that Mitchell lost to ‘Kat’ showed what an overrated fighter he always was.

You can’t win a world title fighting B class fighters…get a grip boy!!

  • Ryan Dunn says:

    @KHAN

I think I know what you mean about Khan. I think some of the hate has something to do with Freddie Roach coaching him now. The same Freddie Roach who coaches Manny Pacquiao. The same Manny Pacquiao who has a HUGE “Mannaysayer” following on this website, from the authors on down.

You will certainly be back kevin anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that fact because you are far to good

  • Judge says:

When you become over confident, you can at times lose focus. MITCHELL LOST FOCUS.

  • Anonymous says:

You will be back Kevin anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that fact.

  • Whinging Pom says:

Excuses, excuses. Fcking Typical pom. Get a pair would ya. The english have no quality fighters except Khan and Haye, the rest are bums.

  • KING says:

    @Peter

your correct, he will be back. But the sad part is that Khan is called a Con still. Khan is on another level to mitchell but Khan gets raped on these forums.

Wonder Why, cause it ant his boxing ability or lossing to prescott. It isnt call he lost to prescott. it ant cos people think he is scared to fight heavy ounching fighter, cause he most prob fight bloke that beat mitchell.

I have my views on this reason.

  • Ukansodoff says:

It pains me to say it, i like Mitchell but that was his 1st fight at a high level and he didnt look to have the brute strength to go toe to toe and didnt look to have the boxing abilities to box his way out of trouble.

He just didnt look good enough,

  • peter says:

dude you got nothing to worry about its one loss you are a awsome fighter and you will come back stronger dont listen to the rest of the muppets they are all qwick to say things when some one gets beat

  • Ryan Dunn says:

These statements always sound better when they’re made BEFORE the fight, not after the man in question has LOST.

Petty. Sounds like Pacquiao after he lost to Morales.

Or Clottey after he lost to Pacquiao.

    :)

  • Rico says:

    all of a sudden!

he just need to admit he wasn’t as good as he thought. not to say he can’t be a world champion. but he needs to take things a little more seriously. get an american trainer like amere con did.
