Mayweather needs to fight Sergio Martinez next

By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs to set his sights on fighting WBC/WBO middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KO’s) next instead of wasting his time and patience on trying to put together a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Martinez, 35, is reportedly willing to take the random blood tests that Mayweather wants. This is just another, among many, fighters that are willing to agree to the random blood testing that Mayweather wants in order to get a fight with him.
This would match a boxer against a boxer. Martinez has a style of fighting somewhat like Mayweather with his counter punching, fast hand speed and ability to move well around the ring. Martinez recently totally outclassed WBC/WBO middleweight champion Pavlik, beating him by a 12 round decision last month on April 17th. Martinez stayed conservative in the first eight rounds, mainly landing one or two punches at a time.
But in the last four rounds, Martinez opened up with his offense and began to pour in combinations and min flurries to beat Pavlik up and leave him a bloody mess by the end of the fight. Martinez wasn’t sure if he would be forced to fight a rematch with Pavlik, as Kelly had a rematch clause in his contract with Martinez. However, Pavlik announced on Monday that he wouldn’t be using the rematch clause and would go in a different direction.
This leaves Martinez free to fight Mayweather, if Floyd wants the fight. Given that he won’t likely get Pacquiao to agree to the full random blood testing that he wants, Mayweather needs to go after Martinez next and see if he can capture his middleweight belts. It will be a tough fight for Mayweather, because the southpaw Martinez is three inches taller and a bigger fighter, but it’s one that boxing fans would surely like to see.

So I guess we can all agree money make the fight not the fighter. All these excuses by PBF and Pacquiao all have to do with the same no matter what you all argue about here. A loss from one or the other results in negative cash flow! And a win opens the flood gates to riches. Ooh they both have a lot to lose that’s why there is lots of thought to this decision. P4P the best fighter in boxing is the one that takes on the top ranked contenders (WBC, WBA, IBF) in each weight class they choose to fight in. #1 – #3. Once they accomplish that then you have my respect! Hand picking your opponent with and winning a title that they award in the YMCA and then not defending it is whacked!!!
I said that Martinez would be Mayweathers next opponent right after the mosley fight. Yea I know it’s no it’s not Pacquiao, but Martinez would be the first fighter that’s faced Floyd in years that you could make a good case for, in terms of him beating Floyd. Sergio has the same tools as Floyd which would make for a very interesting fight. Only problem is their styles could make for a really exciting fight or a really boring fight. One thing for sure is, the world of boxing does not revolve around Floyd or Manny and they should either come to terms or move on.
PBF vs Manny at 147 is an easy win for money with or without blood tests- He’s naturally the bigger guy, and has the skills to frustrate the pacman. But PBF’s commitment to a level playing field is admirable – so why not level things out a bit and fight pacman at 143 in Manilla not Vegas?

Good luck finding any Cintron fight that doesn’t include Margarito! I’ve searched the internet and the only full fights of Cintron I’ve found are his only two losses. Look up Paul Williams, the only fight not on the internet is his only loss! Coincidence? Maybe, but it is odd that two very equal fighters have fought numerous fights and that one’s only two fights around are his only two losses and the other’s only loss is the only one not on the net.
I like to c that match but mayweather wont fight somebody as fast or as slick or bigger than himself. dont get me wrong it possible he could beat martinez. mayweather is not a fan pleaser he a money teaser
The boxing Bible needs to put hix personnel feelings aside and judge the man aka Floyd for his work. Instead of degrading himm every chance you get when it comes to the OSDT. He, as in floyd mayweather jr has the right to ask Pacman for the OSDT. Look at Bryan Cushing in the NFL you never know who’s doing what. I comend Floyd for he has alot to lose, his 0 , Pacman doesn’t.

Martinez is the Middleweight Champ not no Welterweight Champ, Martinez as big names to fight like Winky Wright , a rematch against Paul or Margarito and he has some youngguns are coming like D. Jacobs and F. Gerruro. Mayweather Jr can fight Manny then Cotto and then Clottey would be a fight to see.
floyd/martinez fight is like watching “Pasa Doble” dance. Dancing far from each other. I rather watch Dancing with the star. IF I like to watch a fight I like to see a fight, not dancing around. Of course, martinez like to fight floyd what ever the term is. It will make him an instant millionaire.
Mayweather VS Pac needs to happen too much media attention has been given to this fight already. Superfights make boxing, and superstars make superfights. Manny and Floyd are the perfect good vs evil if this fight happans its a much needed lift for the current boxing world.

I’ve statted several times I wouldn’t pay to see Mayweather / Pac fight anyone but each other again, but Martinez would be an adequate substitute.
However, Mayweather / Pac wouldn’t just be a fight, it would give boxing a desperately needed lift.

The Martinez fight is a great option, but, Floyd needs to finish his work at 147, first. However, if he an Manny can’t see eye-to-eye on the testing, after that has occurred over the past 6 months…time to move on.
I hear Manny and Co. saying how much they want this fight…NOW. And Arum’s desire to keep the negotations private, makes sense…that’s no fun..but, I respect that. I think if Mayweather doesn’t bend on the OSDT, which he SHOULD NOT do, IMO, there will be no fight. However, I might be presently surprised, by the actions of Manny and Co. There are, at least, 40 million reasons, why Manny should ‘give in’ on this one request from Floyd. The split, as long as it’s reasonable, should not matter. They can feed whole countries, from what they make in those momentous 36 mins, whether the split is 60/40, 55/45, or 50/50.
I feel the testing has become as big as the fight itself. And, if Manny does the full OSDT, and still performs at a historic level, against Floyd (win or lose), he will silence ALL the critics.
I’ve heard other fighters swear by Manny being on steriods, and that he could not do this test, and perform at the same level. I can’t say for sure whether he is or isn’t, and neither can anyone else (except Manny)…if they are truly being honest with themselves. We can look at a completely healthy looking person, and not know they are HIV positive.
So, it will be very interesting to see, what action he and his camp decide to take.

What’s interesting is that before Floyd fought Shane, Freddie Roach thought that he was scared of Shane. After the Mosely-Margarito fight, Shane wanted a fight with Minnie but Roach said no. Now after Floyd schools Mosely all of sudden Roach says he will destroy Floyd and that he looks old. Minnie has more boxing miles than Floyd does but instead Roach says Floyd has lost a step? And now we have the latest, November will be Minnie’s last fight where he will not be on the juice, and become the filipino Gatti (no disrepect Arturo, RIP) and they will say he went out like a warrior. When all alone Minnie Punquiao has been an average fighter who found an edge illegally and we the American media made him unbelievalbe.

The way reports portray Pacquiao as softening on his drug-testing stance, seems like he will agree to shorter testing space, maybe up to 7 days before the fight. The match up may still not be made since Mayweather will most probably harden on the purse and ppv splits this time based on recent reports. Eventually, I believe Mayweather will just engage Pacquiao in a safe parallel career lines, moving and competing alongside for public perceptions as to who the P4P king is. He may have to move up to 160 to be out of Pacquiao’s reach and fight Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez if he is to convince the fight fans that he is P4P king. I would not be surprised if Mayweather beats both Martinez and Paul Williams down the road, and if Pacquiao has not retired by the, we just might be back to square one of sorts.

I have to agree with you there I think there can be no more he can do than face Paquiao and then Martinez at Middleweight becouse unfortunately there is no excuses after that, Pacquiao is the best at Welterweight (until proven otherwise) and Martinez is (arguably) the best at 154 so if he beats them then the I am better than Ali and SRR boasts won’t be far fetched then will they?

A win over Sergio Martinez at middleweight holds more weight in knowledgable fight fans eyes than a win over Pacquiao at welter. There are no plausible post fight excuses with Martinez. Yet if Floyd beats Manny, Manny will have always been to small to stand a chance. Not to mention, Martinez has been avoided for years, even more so than Williams has been of late.

No kidding. What I find funny is that after Floyd beat Mosley, Roach said Shane was washed up. Yet less than a year ago, Mosley was begging to fight Pacquiao. He gave up purse, location, ring size, glove choice, and anything else normally negotiated, yet Manny and Freddy ran for the hills.
Enter Floyd, the supposed “artful dodger” to beat Shane more convincingly than he’d ever been beaten.

I honestly don’t think PAC is going to agree to the tests. I think Floyd just coming off a Big win will demand testing up until the fight and that will be the end of it. Sorry but PAC had the 14 day window offer and didn’t take it. Now I think Floyd will play hardball with testing unless they give him a bigger cut of the money.

Berto owns a trinket. A meaningless title. Sergio Martinez is the linear champion at middleweight. That carries so much more weight than length holding a paper title.
