Marquez stops Vazquez in 3rd round

By Jim Dower: As expected, Rafael Marquez had too much left in the tank compared to the badly depleted Israel Vazquez, taking him out in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Marquez cut the slow moving Vazquez in the opening round over both eyes with slashing punches, making it difficult for Vazquez to see the incoming fire.

As it was, Vazquez slow and wide open in trying to defend the powerful shots from Marquez. In the 3rd round, Marquez landed a monstrous shot that dropped Vazquez to one knee early on in the round. With Vazquez covered in blood, bleeding badly from a cut over his right eye, Marquez hammered him with shots near the ropes. The referee Raul Caiz Jr. then stepped in and stopped the bout.

This was the 4th bout between the two fighters. Marquez won the first fight of the series, but Vazquez came back and won fights two and three. Now with this win in the 4th fight, Marquez has knotted up their series of fights with two wins apiece for both fighters. As bad as Vazquez looked in this fight, it’s doubtful there will be a 5th fight between them. Vazquez lost the 1st and 2nd rounds and ate a lot of hard right hands from Marquez in both rounds.

Hitking60 are you thick?! It was Rafael Marquez, not juan Manuel

WOW! I would have to say Vasquez

either has the biggest heart in the world,

or is just plan crazy to go in to this bout

with his eyes still healing. His eyes

looked awful! You could see by looking at

his eyes that he wasn’t 100% ready for

this bout. There would have to be a 5th

bout to really decided who the better of

the two is? But this bout should have def

been dated for a later date. I think that

Boxing to allow a man to go into a bout

like that, where he (Vasquez) could have

lost his sight, is just plan dumb. He

probably will lose his sight later on in

Life. From me watching the bout closely, I

saw that both cuts were from head

clashes, that were opened further by

    punches thrown by Marquez. Marquez

said at the end of the bout that he

    intentionally went for Vasquez eye’s

because he knewn they tender from his

recent operation. But that’s just the way

things went tonite, nothing we can do now.

My prayer’s go out to Vasquez, I hope the

cuts heal good and doesn’t suffer any

problems with his sight. If he heals good

and all is fine, then there should def be a

    5th bout.

    Thanks for Reading

Zip, Vazquez is totally. Look at how loose his legs were. Lil JMM’s legs are gone, but he can still pull the trigger and throw combinations. Vazquez can’t pull the trigger anymore. Vazquez is probably a C Class fighter at this point. No sense in pressing the issue. They need to leave well enough alone before someone (vazquez) gets hurt.

  • Zip says:

Can you say let´s do it for a 5th time? It´s 2-2 so we need a tie breaker and due to the significant cuts on Vazquez it was just too much. I´m sure Marquez would win if they fight again and I hope they don´t actually go again but Marquez looked pretty sharp.

As most people thought, Vazquez is completely shot, and Lil JMM is semi-shot. No need to do this again. Lil JMM’s legs are gone, but he can still put punches together. Vazquez looks like Chico post Corrales-Castillo I. Great while it lasted, but Lil JMM is clearly superior at this point. Plus, its been such a great rivalry, its fitting that they leave it a tie.

I thought Mares won, but that was so far the FOY IMO. Would love to see them do it again.
