Marquez stops Vasquez in 3! The score is even 2 fights a piece
Photo credit – Carlos Baeza – By Sam Gregory: In the main event on tonight’s Showtime Championship Boxing from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Ca WBC super bantamweight title holder Israel Vazquez 44-4 with 32 KO’s defends his title for the fourth time against Rafael Marquez 38-5 with 34 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round bout in the featherweight division.
After the start of the second round both men were again in the center of the ring exchanging punches fast and furiously. Marquez soon had the better of the exchange when he got in close and dug to the body and head of Vasquez with brutal uppercuts. By the end of the round Vasquez had blood streaming down his face coming from the left eye.
Coming out in round three Marquez stood squarely in front of Vasquez teeing off with knockout intended punches; one of the punches connected and sent Vasquez to the canvas. As soon as the referee finished the eight count and signaled to resume fighting Marquez went for the kill digging deep to the body and head of Vasquez. Within seconds Vasquez stopped returning punches; the referee stepped in and called a halt to the bout at 1:33 of the third round.
Rafael Marquez was declared the winner by TKO improving his record to 39-5 with 35 KO’s. Israel Vasquez fell to 44-5 with 32 KO’s.
In this fourth fight between Marquez and Vasquez, the score is even two- fights a piece.

When I saw vasquez eyelids as he was walking toward the ring, I knew this fight won’t last 5 rounds. His trainer, his manager shouldn’t let this guy in the ring! I think vasquez fighting is over coz of stupidity. I hope his okay.
WOW! I would have to say Vasquez
either has the biggest heart in the world,
or is just plan crazy to go in to this bout
with his eyes still healing. His eyes
looked awful! You could see by looking at
his eyes that he wasn’t 100% ready for
this bout. There would have to be a 5th
bout to really decided who the better of
the two is? But this bout should have def
been dated for a later date. I think that
Boxing to allow a man to go into a bout
like that, where he (Vasquez) could have
lost his sight, is just plan dumb. He
probably will lose his sight later on in
Life. From me watching the bout closely, I
saw that both cuts were from head
clashes, that were opened further by
punches thrown by Marquez. Marquez
said at the end of the bout that he
intentionally went for Vasquez eye’s
because he knewn they tender from his
recent operation. But that’s just the way
things went tonite, nothing we can do now.
My prayer’s go out to Vasquez, I hope the
cuts heal good and doesn’t suffer any
problems with his sight. If he heals good
and all is fine, then there should def be a
5th bout.

Now some idiot will come out and say they should have one more to decide the winner.
As most people thought, Vazquez is completely shot, and Lil JMM is semi-shot. No need to do this again. Lil JMM’s legs are gone, but he can still put punches together. Vazquez looks like Chico post Corrales-Castillo I. Great while it lasted, but Lil JMM is clearly superior at this point. Plus, its been such a great rivalry, its fitting that they leave it a tie.
I thought Mares won, but that was so far the FOY IMO. Would love to see them do it again.
Vasquez should retire. His eyes looked damaged before the fight. His surgically repaired eyes will never hold up in a 12 round fight.
