John Murray wants fights with Khan and Mitchell

By Sean McDaniel: Newly crowned European Boxing Union (EBU) lightweight champion John Murray (29-0, 17 KO’s) wants a fight against either WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan or unbeaten lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell, according to the latest news. Murray, 25, is coming off an 11th round stoppage win over Gary Buckland last Friday night at the Kingsway Leisure Centre, in Cheshire, England. It was a workmanlike performance from the 25-year-old Murray but not one that would lead me to believe that he could beat Mitchell or Khan.
Murray was able to beat Buckland down eventually with his high work rate, but it wasn’t an impressive performance by any means. Khan and Mitchell are different fighters. They tend to fight on the outside, move a lot and rarely stand in close. Even if they both stood next to Murray all night long and fought his kind of fight, I still think they would beat him because of their better power and hand speed. Murray needs to make some changes in his offense and try to pick up some movement and power.
He may have beaten Buckland last Friday night, but I think he would be mincemeat if he were able to get a fight with Khan and Mitchell. The chances of Murray getting fight against either would seem to be very slim at this point. Khan is looking to go after the top light welterweights in the division in the future, provided he gets by Paulie Malignaggi this Saturday night. And Mitchell is taking on the hard hitting Michael Katsidis this Saturday night.
If Mitchell is able to get by Katsidis, then he’ll possibly be fighting the WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez next. Unfortunately, there isn’t really any time for either fighter to entertain fight against the EBU lightweight champion. Besides, it would be a backwards move for both Mitchell and Khan. They need to be going after top ranked word class athletes not European champions.

Id like to see mitchel and khan get it on ,but now amirs moving in the top flight by cherry picking its not likely to happen unfortunately.
to me murray is like a better version of katsidis.
He has more of a chance against khan as he is stronger and has a pressure style so he could catch amir and brutally stop or ko him failing that amir UD.
Mitchell outclasses him unless he slugs it out where it could go either way.
I like Murray and find him exciting to watch, but i dont think he will stand much chance against Khan and against Mitchell it would be good for a few rounds but he’d end up losing a wide UD.
I hope he becomes a world champion, but I cant see it happening

By the way, she’s not going to the Khan fight, she told me she was a popstar!
I like Murray and he is good to watch but i have to be honest i dont think he could cut it against either Khan or Mitchell and wont become a world champion.
Khan is also highly unlikely to ever return to Lightweight and ive seen Murray fight at Lightwelter and he didnt do very well. If he wants to move up then it will have to be done progessivly and hes got plenty to do at this weight right now.

you say Murray has no power but this isn’t the case, Murray took this fight at three weeks notice and not having fought for seven months. Therefore this wasnt a fight we can take much notice of as Murray just wanted it to get his hands on the European title and get over an inactive period. Murray is to defend the title within 90 days so that fight may be a fairer refelction of John’s abiltiy. As far as Kkhan is concerend, he dodged Murray as a lightweight while he was in based in the UK but i agree Khan would be too classy for him. Mitchell wouldn’t though and is a fight that definetly should happen as they are the two best lightweights in the country, i can see katsidis beating Mitchell and as a result the Murray Mitchell fight being made
khan avoided murray like the plague a couple of years ago.
