Cotto has to beat Foreman to keep alive his rematch hopes against Pacquiao

By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) is moving up in weight to take on the little known WBA light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) on June 5th, at the Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx, New York. Cotto, 29, is doing this to try and capture the WBA title and make himself more appealing for a rematch against Manny Pacquiao, who easily defeated Cotto by a 12th round knockout last November. The thought of a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao is more than a little nauseating if you’re the average fan who is interested in watching a competitive fight.

However, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum sees the appeal in the fight with the huge fan bases of these two fighters, and will likely move ahead to set this fight up if Cotto can beat Foreman next week on June 5th and if Pacquiao doesn’t take on undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. Even if Pacquiao does fight Mayweather next, my guess is Arum will be able to persuade Pacquiao to come back for another fight against Cotto. If Cotto-Pacquiao II fight does take place, don’t expect the fight to be any more competitive than the first fight.

Pacquiao pretty much established that he was the much superior fighter in that bout and Cotto will be extremely lucky to see the 12th round in a rematch. The problem is that Arum wants the Cotto-Pacquiao rematch to happen and he’s not likely to steer away from this fight to match Pacquiao against some new blood that might actually have a chance at beating Pacquiao, like Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams.

First things first, though. Cotto has to beat Foreman next week to stay alive in the Pacquiao lottery and that may be easier said than done for Cotto. Foreman is a lot bigger, faster, quicker on his feet and hard to hit. This is the opposite of the normal opponents that Cotto has been matched against during his career. He usually is put in with fighters that just stand in front of him for 12 rounds, letting him get his shots off. Foreman isn’t that type of fighter. He’s more of a mover, clincher and a hit and run type of fighter.

Cotto had huge problems when he fought Oktay Urkal, a fighter who used that style against Cotto three years ago in 2007. Cotto tired in the 2nd half of the fight and became visibly frustrated with Urkal’s hit and grab technique, at one point body slamming him. You can be sure that Foreman will have Cotto looking even more frustrated because he’s a lot better than Urkal and a lot bigger too. I can see this fight going to a decision and Cotto winning a controversial one. It’s hard for the less popular fighter to beat a mini cash cow like Cotto, and that’s why I can see Cotto winning a decision, even if he clearly gets dominated by Foreman.

It may take something really special from Foreman for him to get the decision over Cotto on June 5th. I hope I’m wrong but I have a pretty good idea that I’ll be right. But I surely don’t want to see a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao. Even if this is fight that their fan bases want to see, it’s not something the average fan will likely want to see again. Doesn’t Arum have any other ideas than to trot out Cotto again when he’s already been pounded by Pacquiao.

I would like to see Cotto get a rematch with Marcheato so people will find out who if Margarito’s gloves were probably loaded. It will a great indicator. I think Cotto should take a longer break to get to the ring so the cuts could fully heal. I think he should of waited until december or Mid 2011 but what’s done is done.

Lol, Arum cracks me up. Why does Cotto deserve another shot? He got systematically broken down and stopped violently. No need or call for a rematch that will end worse than the first.

I would think if foreman were to beat Cotto he would get a shot.

Cotto will beat some B-level fighters but the guy is TENDERIZED. He needs to be careful.

YOU SEE WHAT PEOPLE DONT UNDER STAND IS THAT THE REASON WHY COTTO WILL GET A CHANCE AGAINST ANYBOBY IS BECAUSE HE DONT PICK WHO HE SHOULD FIGHT.THE TRUTH IS THAT PAC WON THAT FIGHT NOT BECAUSE HE SO GREAT BUT BECAUSE COTTO WAS IN REAL BAD SHAPE.EVEN IN THE CONDITION HE WAS IN HE STILL TRY TO TAKE MANNY OUT EVEN WITH MARGARITO COMING DOWN ON HIM LIKE A SACK OF BRIKS HE WAS STILL FIGHTING TO WIN.LETS SAY COTTO DOES GET A CHANCE HE WILL BE ABLE TO HAVE A LITTLE MORE WEIGHT ON HIM AND A MEDIUM LEVEL FIGHT SAVING SOME OF HIS SELF FOR GOOD FIGHT WITH WHO EVER WHEN EVER HOW EVER BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT WEIGHT UP OR DOWN GLOVE BIG OR SMALL STEROIDS PLASTER HERE THERE THE BOY WILL COME TO TRY TO WIN.

What I would want to see is a fight between Cotto and Margarito, this will once and for all show us if Margarito can really beat Cotto ( just assuming their last fight was loaded …just assuming ) that would definitely close the book … then we can talk about him fighting either Pacman or PBF.

Miguel Cotto has faced fast handed fighters like Zab Judah and Shane Mosley and has the experience of fighting hard hitting punchers like Pacquiao, Margarito and Joshua Clottey! Yuri Foreman on the other hand is still undefeated only because he is matched up with lower level boxers.

TO CHRIS WILLIAMS,COTTO HAD A CHANCE TO PUT PACQUIAO DOWN AND EVEN POUND HIM…BUT THE FACT IS AS EVERYONE SAW,COTTO WAS TIRED AND WASN’T ABLE TO EXECUTE..AND FROM WHAT WE SAW COTTO WAS STILL LANDING SHOTS AND STILL FIGHTING EVEN THO HE WAS TIRED NOT BEAT’ND…AND HIS TRAINING NOW IS PAYING OFF FROM WHAT I HEAR,SO WITH A BETTER ENDURED COTTO WE SHOULD SEE COTTO WINNING BOTH FIGHTS….WITH MORE TIME TO TRAIN COTTO WILL BE MORE THAN A MATCH FOR PACQUIAO IN THE FUTURE..WE WILL SEE A BETTER COTTO EVERY TIME..LOSES MAKE A FIGHTER BETTER!!!

  • Aaron says:

I’d love to see Cotto vs Pacman II it’d be great to see at Cotto’s actual weight them little glimpes in the fight you seen Cotto would be alot more maybe 70-80% of the fight which would destroy Pacman only problem is losing to him will be a big hill to climb mentally but i think Cotto is far better quality than Pacman even tho he took a beating that fight was built for Cotto to lose.

    pacman-floyd or bust!

The only way I would want to watch a rematch of Cotto vs Pacman is if Cotto was not drain and did not have to fight a catch weight.

  • hand wraps says:

And for the record, junito will win this fight!! I’ll be there in person to witness him became champion again! WAR COTTO BABY!!! WAR!!

  • Macca says:

why should there be a rematch? Cotto got beaten badly by Pacquiao. Yes he had brief moments in the fight but he isnt good enough to beat Manny. Only fighter Pacquiao should ever face now is Mayweather

  • hand wraps says:

with the writer in this article saying Quote ” I see little chance of cotto reaching the 12 rd in a rematch with pacquaio, just sounds ridiculous. In the first bout cotto was pretty much training himself. Team cotto now has a new commander and chief and if pacquaio and him ever meet again, I’m sure the legendery steward would have an exclusive game plan for Manny P.

  • r.a.w. says:

Going by Manny’s recent track record, he’ll probably fight the loser of Cotto-Foreman!
