Cotto-Foreman: Will Steward make any difference for Miguel?

By Jason Kim: Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) recently picked up a new trainer with Emanuel Steward, who is said to be tinkering with the fighting style of Cotto and trying to improve his punching and defensive flaws. Cotto will be facing Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) on June 5th at the Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx, New York. Cotto has lost two out of his last four bouts, and not looked particularly good on defense. Steward thinks that he can help him. I’m not so sure he can. Cotto is basically a slugger, and that’s what has made him so successful during his career. At light welterweight, the 5’7” Cotto was an awesome puncher.

However, he was still hit an awful lot and hurt in fights against Ricardo Torres and Randall Bailey. Cotto could punch but he was very vulnerable on defense and he had problems making the weight. Cotto eventually moved up in weight to the welterweight division in December 2006 and found immediate success in stopping Carlos Quintana in the 5th round. Cotto looked good for the most part, although he did struggle against Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah and Shane Mosley.

Cotto was hurt twice in the Judah fight but turned the fight around after landing some nice low blows that seemed to take the life out of Judah, making him much more passive and manageable. However, Cotto continued to take a lot of punishment for the most part despite the fact that he was still winning. In 2008, Cotto finally ran into Antonio Margarito and took a horrendous beating, losing by an 11th round TKO. Cotto tried to box in that fight and still ended up getting stopped. It’s unclear what Steward figures to change with Cotto, because he doesn’t have the stamina or the height to box from the outside for 12 rounds and find success.

He also is quite small for a light middleweight. It’s a curious move by Cotto for him to move up in weight to the light middleweight division, because he’s really kind of undersized for the welterweight division, and by moving up in weight against the even bigger junior middleweights, Cotto is really asking for it. He’s going to be facing Foreman, a fighter that will be three inches taller than Cotto at 5’10”. A lot of people think that this is a temporary move on Cotto’s part so that he can win a title that he can use to lure Pacquiao into fighting him for a second time, and also a move that satisfies his Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, because Foreman is one of the many fighters in Arum’s stable.

Cotto, the much star in Arum’s stable, would be helping him out by fighting one of his fighters instead of a more popular fighter than Foreman. But whatever the case, Steward may not have much effect on Cotto for this fight. It’s kind of late in the game to be tinkering with the fighting style of the 29-year-old Cotto, and he doesn’t have the body or the stamina to make many changes. He tried running against Pacquiao and Margarito, and only ran out of gas. He doesn’t move well enough or have good enough stamina to be much more than a slugger. He can move a little for awhile, but he quickly tires out and becomes very vulnerable to getting knocked out when he stops running.

Pacquiao should retire after one more fight. His legacy is already sealed. He has nothing to prove anymore even without the fight with Mayweather. Ten or more years from now Pacquiao will be remembered as one of the greatest fighters of all time together with Mohammed Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, Joe Lois while Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be completely forgotten. But he will be remembered as the greatest boxing coward of all time.

Just because Cotto is a slugger doesn’t mean that Steward can’t help him work on protecting himself. He needs to work on continuing to be an offensive fighter, while making sure his punches are precise and off the top rather than from the chest so that he can still protect his chin while throwing. The FIRST THING Steward changed was how Cotto leans forward too much and makes himself an easy target for his opponents. By standing more upright it will make it harder for his opponents to land their power shots since he will be further away from them, and it will make his jab more affective by allowing him to create more space. It will also force him to throw his punches off the top of the shoulders (protecting himself more) rather than from the chest. I think Cotto will look like a completely different fighter from when he fought Pacquiao. I see Cotto winning by a mid to late round KO.

yes he will make a differnce he has got coto standing up straight instead of crouching down the whole time but i dont think it will get him a win

  • dls 0475 says:

yo kim, come on how long did randall bailey last in the ring with cotto what 4 or 5 rounds he couldn’t handle cotto right hand And in the pacman figth he had 2 come down 2 145 a weight that played be big roll in that fight and if it didn’t then why make him come down cotto didn’t want 2 fight @ that weight. i just think Emanuel Steward will make a big difference cuz the last 2 fights cotto did not have a brain in he’s corner plus in the begging of cotto’s career he was more of a boxer puncher then just a puncher so thats what i think that Emanuel Steward will bring 2 the table if pacman fight cotto @ a higher weight that cotto is comfortable in just like pacman was when he faceoff with cotto he will lose. All i see in pacman is that he make’s fighter come down 2 a weight that there not comfortable in. pacman is good. i’m going 2 say that he is the p4p catch weight King of boxing so how many fights did maywaether jr had in a catch weight…yo kim tell your boy pacman 2 take that blood test with out a sit date and stop tryin 2 buy more time 2 clean his self up…lol.. now do you really know boxing….j/k don’t be mad…lol

  • ZEY says:

I THINK YOU HAVE THAT ALL WRONG,IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO BE A BOXER AND A SLUGGER,YA GOTTA MIX IT UP…AND ANY ONE CAN IMPROVE IN ENDURANCE,THATS WHY THERE’S TRAINING…THE MORE YOU PUSH YOUR LIMITS,THE MORE CAN YOU ENDURE LATER…AND THE BETTER YOU TRAIN,THE BETTER YOU BECOME…FOREMAN IS GOOD,BUT COTTO IS GREATER…THE REASON WHY I SAY THIS IS BECAUSE I SEE POTENTIAL IN WHAT COTTO DOES…YOU’LL SEE IF YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED HIS IMPROVEMENTS IN THE LAST FIGHTS,HIS SKILL STILL GROWS EVERY TIME

  • abhonda says:

no it wont make a bit of difference, the death of his father, the law suit for sexual harassement, and his family troubles is haunting him. He’s camp is not the same and I dont think he will recover from the beating he recieved from Margacheato and Pacquiao. I like Cotto but these are the issues that plague his life right now but i do hope he pulls through and win this fight!
