Bradley vs. Abregu on July 17th – News
By Jim Dower: World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to take on top 10 ranked welterweight contender Luis Carlos Abregu (29-0, 23 KO’s) on July 17th in a non-title fight at the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, California. Bradley, 26, was supposed to be fighting WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s). However, Maidana injured his back and needed to cancel the fight. Abregu, an exciting fighter with a lot of power and terrible defense, is ranked #5 WBC, #8 IBF and #10 in the WBO.
Abregu stopped Irving Garcia in the 4th round last year in April, and in December 2008, Abregu struggled to beat David Estrada by a 10 round split decision. The fight could have gone either way. Abregu has power, there’s no question about that, but he’s vulnerable to hard punchers and he takes too much punishment in his fights. This should be a fairly easy fight for Bradley unless he’s unable to cope with Abregu’s size and power.
Bradley is hoping to get a fight with Amir Khan and some of the bigger stars in the sport like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, Bradley would really help himself if he were able to fight both in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions, so that he could knock off as many top fighters as possible to increase his name value. Staying and fighting strictly at light welterweight won’t do it for Bradley, because there are really not enough talented fighters in the division with a name.
At welterweight, Bradley could take WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, Shane Mosley, if he continues to fight, Miguel Cotto, Mike Jones, Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana and Jan Zaveck. Even if Pacquiao retires without fighting Bradley, which is very likely, he would still be better off being able to fight out of both divisions at once to get the biggest possible fights.

it makes perfect sense to have alexander and bradley fight now.the loser will be just as big a name as he is now(maybe even bigger)and the winner will be a legitimate big name fighter.having alphabet champs fight nobodies builds nothing.
Bradleys defense is his offense.I would say little Joe Frazier but joe had way better head movement.
in all fairness, Alexander hasnt exactly been hammering on Bradleys door either. Alexander is fighting Kotelnik for christ sake.
The division is fast becoming a joke where none of the top guys are fighting each other. Khan will only fight lightweights and soft punchers, Bradley appears to be avoiding devon, and Devon is going for weak guys that chumps like Khan have already beat!!
maidana will kill everyone in the LW division.
only one backing up the “i want to fight the best” is Alexander and Maidana everyone else is running away from someone.
Only the die-hard fans want Bradley/Alexander now, but it makes perfect sense to hold it off until they get bigger names. Both fighters need to win a couple more fights to draw national interest. Bradley takes out a bigger undefeated fighter and then maybe Maidana, and Alexander can beat Kotelnik and maybe Judah…then you have a better build up to a unification fight.
DA fights Kotelnik on August 8th in St. Louis.
Abregu has a shot at this one if he comes in guns blazing. Bradley has practically zero power, and was decked early by Holt if I remember right.
A risky move against a tough fighter like Abregu. Poor matchmaking and management from the Bradley camp.
I like Tim Bradley a lot. I think he is an exceptional talent in light welterweight. He has speed, quickness, smarts, vision etc, but not much power. In the welterweight all of the top fighters he mentions has all the aforementioned skills plus dangerous power. If you can’t knock people out you will not be around this crowd long because they all are knocking people out.
Devon Alexander is the top contender. Why is
Bradley not saying anything about fighting
him in a title bout. It gives me the chills
just thinking about them two going at it.
Someone call someone and make it happen!
D.ROTe
it would serve him right if he gets ko’ed
If he wanted to be a big name then he shouldve taken the big unification fight with alexander for the WBC/IBF/WBO titles
Whats amazing is a whole article on Tim Bradley and his future opponents conveniently has no mention of Devon Alexander whatsover LOL
I’m not sure how Bradley is rated no.1 light welter. I struggle to see him beating Devon Alexander (my no.1) and see khans (no.2) giving him fits. He has the beating of maidana I think cos of his boxing skills. But this is only the champions, ortiz could cause him trouble with movement and power, marques talks of moving up and who can doubt his skills and experience. I think there’s alot of fighters who could trouble Bradley I genuinely believe he Is over hyped.
This bradley guy is gana get ko’ed trust me
I hope Bradley gets KO’d brutally. Then he’ll be in need and be begging to fight Alexander who should shaft him in the negotiations.
i hate to say this…but this is the second or third time bradley has “avoided” devon…lucky for him casual fans don’t know who he is or he’d be getting khan like hate.
This guy is running from Devon!!
Bradley already lacks true power so moving up would be a bad move right now. The top welters are quicker and more powerful than him and he would get blasted by Berto, Pac, Floyd, etc.
Bradley has some work to do at Light-Welterweight to justify Andre Berto or Miguel Cotto, let alone Floyd or Manny.
He is excellent, but needs to beat some or all of Khan, Alexander & Maidana, and maybe fight Ortiz, Katsidis or Marquez before he can move up claiming to be the top at light welter.
Looks like Tim Bradley is afraid to come to the Lou’ and fight Devon Alexander. That kid has kats shaking in their boots. He’s obviously a BAD MAN!! Will someone please step up and fight DA? We need a big fight in St. Louis.
