Allan Green says Ward “has a weak chin”

By William Mackay: Super Six tournament contestant Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO’s) thinks that WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) has a weak chin and he intends on taking advantage of that in their stage 2 Super Six tournament fight on June 19th at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. Green, 30, says “If you really watch his [Ward] fights, he never goes blow-to-blow with another fighter. He will fight for 15-20 seconds with the jab, then he will grab, hold and push away. That’s the way he fights, and you can forget about him trying to do any inside fighting. He has a weak chin; I know it, he knows it, and everybody else knows it.”

Most boxing experts give Green very little chance at beating Ward next month. Indeed, Green is being given a puncher’s chance at winning the fight. He doesn’t hit as hard as Edison Miranda, who Ward totally dominated last year in a 12 round decision in May. What Green does have is a lot of power and excellent hand speed. He doesn’t always deliver that power because he holds back sometimes when he’s facing quality opposition. Will Green do that in this fight. It will be interesting to see. Green is in a do or die situation because he’s coming into this fight with the ‘0’ points from Jermain Taylor, who pulled out of the Super Six tournament after being stopped by Arthur Abraham in October in their stage 1 Super Six tourney fight. Green must beat Ward or else he won’t likely make it to the semi finals.

Green says he’s okay with fighting Ward in his home town, but that remains to be seen. Mikkel Kessler, who Ward dominated in his first fight of the Super Six tournament last November, looked badly intimidated by the large Oakland crowd and the noise. Ward seemed to thrive on the crowd noise and fought incredibly well, shutting Kessler out for 10 rounds until the fight was stopped in the 11th due to two cuts over Kessler’s eyes. The fight was ruled a technical decision with Ward getting the win.

Green hasn’t fought since last October, beating Tarvis Simms by a 10 round unanimous decision. Going from that fight to a bout against the lightning fast Ward is going to be a bit of shock to Green, who has faced mostly B level opposition in his career. However, despite fighting mostly B fighters, Green has done what he’s had to do against them, beating all of them and looking good in doing so. Green was beaten by Miranda, his best opponent of his career in March 2007.

I hope Green knocks this guy out.

  • Armando hernandez says:

I have to go with Andre Ward on this one. He’s to quick and slick plus he’s a local fighter. Got to show some support.

  • martin says:

lets see if ward is fighting with his headbutt-dirty-style again. the headbutts were the reason why he dominated kessler.

i will cheer for green. he is a good man and a real fighter like abraham, kessler or taylor. He is not hugging, holding and slipping everytime the opponent got him in a corner.

flip a coin,it could go either way.ward isnt a lock in this or any fight since hes really not that good.

I can’t wait for this upcoming bout! Allen Green is

talking so much junk. Andre Ward said, “If Allen Green thinks

    I’m pulling for Green!!

  • R J Hill says:

Prabably Ward has as strong a chin as simms.,if he fights Ward that way he loses badly.

  • renegade boxingfan says:

green in over his head with this one. only chance to win is to catch ward. strictly punchers chance.

  • Kevin Frey says:

I like both fighters a lot (there really isn’t a bad match to be made in this tour, a great thing for boxing and its fans), but I think Ward is a very complete fighter and should easily handle Green. Allan’s punching power is phenomenal though and he has pretty good handspeed, shows world class-level skills since his operation and has a real chance in this tour. He has, at the very least, an intelligent puncher’s chance, but I gotta go with Ward.
Both guys chins should be tested that night, though, and I think Ward simply slips punches better and Green won’t be able to keep up with his footwork (Ward seems to come with many game plans, and as good as Allan has looked – even in losing – he seems to fight the same fight each time out.

Regardless, let’s be glad this thing is happening – I wish the 140-160 guys would start this kind of elite shuffle game…

@banagem1 , Green did the coloectomy after 2 fight from mirandas fight. Ward is very excellent fighter I don’t see green get a win over him. Green is very good and he’s better that kessler, actually I think hes gonna take the WBC belt from kessler in stage 3. mark my words

  • bangem1 says:

@reno,thanks for the correction i knew i was on the right track though, but i still believe him being sick played a major part in that loss imagine if he was at 100% at that time like he is now ,but now he has more to prove with this super 6 he knows the $ and exposure could throw him in the bigger & better fights, and i think we will see an allen green that is more agressive than any of his other fights hes just really focused and hungry and the fact that he feels slighted because he should of been there in the first place not talyor i think is giving him the mental strength he will need to beat ward.

  • Reno says:

@bangem1 he actually had a large portion of his colon removed after the Miranda fight not before, he was sick during and leading up to the fight with Miranda and still managed to drop Miranda in that bout. But Green doesn’t move his head well at all, and he can be hit because he’s a stiff upper body fighter (similar to Shane Mosley). I think Ward gets a UD in this fight due to his slickness and working angles, I can’t see Ward knocking Green out at all.

  • bangem1 says:

i do believe ward is good, but he is a bit overhyped.face it kessler aint really an a+ fighter himself, and green has a chin, power, and even boxing skills although a little less skills than ward.also remember when green loss to miranda he was fighting coming off of surgey for having the majority of his spleen(i think spleen)removed.this is his chance to shine hes been waiting a long time he wont let this oppurtunity pass him by.

  • Rocky says:

Last guy in the whole wide world to talk about weak chins is Green. Didn’t he get decked hard by a club fighter. Let your fists do your talking Green, to this point, you’re a nobody.

  • Anthony 20 says:

I think Green will get dominated and even if it is close he wont get the decision as of it been in Wards hometown but even still Ward has to much skills for him

  • BoxingGuy101@yahoo.com says:

I got Andre Ward, talk is cheap. Andre Ward said,” if he thinks(Green) has something to prove that makes two of us!” LOL I CAN’T WAIT!

  • Tommy says:

@ joe and Tom Britt. Solid points all around.we shall see

  • Ukansodoff says:

Green thinks that because Ward boxes smart he has no chin?

  • Tommy says:

One more thing. With all the possible matchups at super middle,no way Froch retires.Too much money even if he loses.

  • Tommy says:

I’m a little biased being from Oakland myself but I see Ward dominating Green. He seems to be the most talented in the tourney and with Lucian Bute waiting in the wings, and Pavlik coming up,it looks like Andre will have a lot of options even if he doesnt win the super 6.Alot of money to be made at super middle the next couple years.Give em hell Andre.

  • Joe says:

I think Ward has been over hyped since Kessler win. Kessler wasnt a world beater as your saw in the Froch fight which he did struggle at times.

Green is gonna shock the world. He has a shot at knocking him out

  • G says:

Ward IMO is the best @ super middle since calzaghe & will dominate Green
