Wladimir Klitschko calls out Haye: Will David choose to run?

By William Mackay: In a video sent today from International Boxing Federation/World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KO’s) to multiple websites, Klitschko called out WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 JO’s), saying “You can’t run away from me forever and you need to follow through with this fight to get respect. I’m ready. What are you waiting for?” Klitschko, 34, has revered the tables on Haye. Previously, it was Haye, who with almost zero experience at heavyweight, called Wladimir and his brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, out in the media on a daily basis to land fights with them.

However, after succeeding at getting fights with both Klitschko brothers last year, Haye instead was unable to make it to the ring with them, bowing out of the fight with Wladimir because of a back problem and then backing out completely with a fight against Vitali to fight WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev. Now that Haye has the WBA title, he and his trainer/manager Adam Booth don’t know who they plan on fighting next.

Haye has already successfully defended his title once against his mandatory challenger, 38-year-old John Ruiz last week, stopping in the 9th round. This has caused Haye’s British fans to become really excited about him, many of them now thinking that Haye can beat both Klitschko brothers based on how good he looked against the 38-year-old Ruiz. Once Haye got his mandatory defense against Ruiz out of the way, most people thought he would dive right in for a bout against Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko. But it doesn’t look like that’s happening, because now they’re saying he has to decide on what fight to take next.

Haye has to give former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev a rematch, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be immediately. Haye is free to fight Wladimir or his brother next, if he so chooses. But then again, the Klitschko brothers are much tougher than Valuev, who Haye looked horrible against, averaging only 10 punches per round.

If Haye chooses Valuev, he can milk his title for a little longer and will have a better chance at holding onto it for a little while longer. A rematch with Valuev isn’t a sure win for Haye, though, because we saw how badly Haye struggled against Valuev last time out, and there’s no telling what would happen in a rematch. I personally thought that Valuev won the fight based on his superior aggression in the fight.

At worst, I thought it could have been scored a draw. But it won’t be an easy win for Haye, but at least Haye would have a better chance of milking his title while longer before facing one of the Klitschko brothers, if he ever does, that is. Wladimir obviously is worried that Haye will choose to run from him, to fight other opponents to milk the title and will end up losing to one of those fighters before he has a chance at whipping him in a mega fight.

The problem Haye is that he’s not a big heavyweight, only 6’3”, 220, and has a weak chin. Haye would likely be in great danger if he was to be pitted against tough contenders like Odlanier Solis (who already stopped Haye in the amateur ranks), Alexander Povetkin, Samuel Peter, Chris Arreola or Tomasz Adamek. This is why Wladimir wants to fight Haye before the British heavyweight gets taken out.

Haye versus Wlad perhaps? Haye versus Vitali? Unlikely unless Hayes camp have discovered some physical or other health problem Vitali is secretly suffering from.

As for Haye not being a REAL champ. How many are nowadays? Probably only about 1/2 dozen across the weights. Any of us could win the Falkland Islands version of a World Title (Sic!) and call ourselves champ if we wanted to!

  • Pete says:

    Ironhammer –

Yeah, we’re so conned. That Haye… conning us into thinking he is a world champion, conning us into thinking he unified the cruiserweights.. damn he is bad…!!!!!

What a criminal with he quick skills and big punches but we wont be fooled will we?

No wonder most English fighters get little respect most times. If the fan’s and fighters there have the same knowledge for boxing then I see why most English fighters end up horizontal! LOL

  • Anonymous says:

hype will never fight a K brother, this guy just does not have the balls.

  • Mike says:

Whatever happened in the fight negotiations in the past,is in the past! Now Wlad has plainly stated to the boxing world and Haye himself, what are you waiting for, lets fight?!

No more talk, are you going to accept the challenge Haye?

  • sup says:

    @RMC

I have to disagree there when you say that the K brothers have no one else to fight. The point here is that nobody is doubting the K brothers or their ability, they have taken and beaten just about all their opponents over the past years, their skill is not in doubt, if they never fought David Haye I don`t think the perception of them by the boxing community would change whereas if Haye does not fight them he will never earn the respect he believes he deserves. The K brothers are the measuring stick for David Haye and not vice versa. If you look at it in that context maybe you can see how David Haye really is the one that needs this fight more than anyone else, the K brothers could retire tomorrow and nobody would think any different.

  • KOFan says:

    RMC –

    1. He pulled out with two different excuses Back/Hand injuries.
    2. He had a chance to fight Vitali, just had to sign a contract, Pizza Face chickend out and decided to fight Valuev. All this decapitating talk, is just BS, for idiot UK fans.

  • Martin says:

PBL you don’t put bums on seats without entertaining and winning fights.

As for trash talking, I recall Ali and more recently Naz getting knocked by many because people confuse confidence and showmanship with arrogance and bad taste. David Haye and Adam Booth are eloquent speakers who know how to promote fights and also how to be objective and humble at the right time. One or two publicity stunts to get under the skin of the K brothers before he was crowned WBA heavyweight champ were a little close to the mark, but had the desired effect.

Enjoy Haye while he’s still around, because he’s smart enough to retire early with his senses intact and hopefully a few more entertaining wins in the bag.

  • PBL says:

    @boxingfandan

Correct: Solis carries too much weight

    Incorect: Haye was schooling solis….

….Haye got stopped on the outclassed rule.. numpty!!

  • Ukansodoff says:

Lex personally i dont think Haye ran from either brother and i dont think either brother are worried about Haye.

I think your way too bias against Haye and just keep repeating yourself. But then thats my opinion against yours.

But Mayweather? Hes the most gifted and most gutless boxer in the sport. Hes got the tools to beat the lot but hes scared to face them, or atleast on a level pegging. I will never change my view of this prick,

  • Gary D - Mcr England says:

This guy, William Mackay, is a joke, I’m not sure he knows what he’s on about. Anyway, David WILL fight the Klitchko’s cos he stands to make some serious money in doing so. He’s got his mandatory out of the way in front of a 20,000 sellout crowd, I won’t be surprised if he has another to get some more money first, but it will happen. He’ll knock Wladimir out cos he’s got a glass jaw and he’s too frightened to have a proper tear up. Vitali is by far the better brother and Vitali Vs Haye will be a proper 50/50 fight. How this Mackay guy saw Valuev winning is beyond me, he say’s Haye averaged 10 punches per round, if he actually watched the fight he’d notice Valuev threw even less!! He was punching fresh air all night, add to the fact Haye broke his right hand in the 2nd round he still clubbed the big lump in the last round and made him do a chicken dance, something nobody in 50 odd fight’s has managed to do. If they fought again, can’t see it though, David would knock him out. Against Ruiz, Haye did to him which nobody had managed in 14 YEARS!! No matter what people think of Ruiz, he was no pushover and had only been sparked by David Tua, who could bang if I remember correctly. Fact is, Haye knocks out Wladimir and has his 1st real test against Vitali. I think this Mackay must be American and he’s obviously sore because all the American Heavyweights are below average.

  • RMC says:

lex_fugitive – Please remind me when Haye chickened out last year, when were those two occasions? Because from what I remember the official line was

    1. Haye got injured asked Wlad for a 7 week extension and Wlad refused.

    2. The Vitali fight never actually existed, there was no signed sealed and delivered contract, so if it never existed on official paperwork, how can Haye run from it?

  • RMC says:

@Sup – Hayes holding two aces, because he does not have to take the first contract they try to throw at him. He’s the only fight out there for the K brothers, love him or hate him you want to see him fight either Wlad or Vitali as everyone does. Hayes a far bigger draw now, he holds a portion of the world title, so comes to the ring as a champion. This means none of these contracts with stupid clauses such as fight Wlad, then Vitali, then Wlad then his best mates former room mate at university all whilst getting paid sweet FA, and if you do win, having to give up your titles in order to fulfil these clauses only so one or the other brother can win them back. I’d say Haye now is holding a nice set of cards and in a far better position.

  • Gary D - Mcr England says:

Personally I think Haye will fight Wladimir and he’ll bang him out because he’s got a glass jaw and David will catch him because he’s willing to take risks. Vitali is the better Klitchko and Vitali vs Haye is the more even fight. Regarding the Valuev fight, Haye broke his hand in the 2nd round which was why he only used it sparingly, when Big Nic left his chin out in the 12th round, David smashed it, with his broken right hand by the way, and made him do the chicken dance. Nobody in 50 odd fight’s had managed that yet Haye did it with his bad hand. How Mackay reckons Valuev won “because Haye only threw 10 punches per round” isn’t telling the whole story because Valuev was constantly punching fresh air and caught David with even less! If anybody actually saw the fight they’d know this. Against Ruiz, Haye stopped a guy who hadn’t been stopped in 14 years, no matter how bad people think Ruiz was, the fact was he was no pushover and Haye did just that. If Haye catches Wladimir with the kind of shots he caught Ruiz with, it’ll be curtains for him and “bring on your big brother!”

  • lex_fugitive says:

    ukansodoff;
Why did Haye chicken out twice just last year? Was he scared then, but now he’s serious about wanting to fight them? Its like the story “The boy who cried wolf”. Haye has been caught lying about wanting to fight the brothers so often that now people don’t believe he wants to fight them at all. Its time for Haye to put up, but he won’t he will fight another bum or mediocre opponent and claim the brothers are scared of him. Ukansodoff, in two comments on this thread alone, you have proven you know nothing about boxing. Your fairytale land sounds very amusing where its a guys fault the other won’t fight him. You blame Mayweather for Mosley refusing to fight him and the Klischko’s for Haye refusing to fight them. Interesting logic, the one that refuses the fight is actually the one that wants it? And the one that wants the fight actually doesn’t?

  • Boxingfandan says:

Haye is not an amateur anymore. He was schooling solis, giving him a count in round one. Solis on the other hand carries to much weight as a pro. He looked better as an amateur. Haye would beat him.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    Ukansodoff;
Yea Mosley was pass his prime when Mayweather CALLED HIM OUT IN 99. And again in 2006. It was Mayweather’s fault Mosley cried about a toothache and wanting to take trips instead of fighting Floyd. It is fact that Mayweather tried to fight Mosley for 8 years and Mosley ran and hid from him the whole time. So if Mosley is too old now, he has no one to blame but himself.

  • PBL says:

Blind faith is amusing. Actually its not, its annoying.

and @Martin when did bums on seats win fights?

  • Ukansodoff says:

Gar give your humble pie back, Maywether has waited till Mosley is way past his prime. Typical Mayweather.

  • cheater says:

it’s obvious haye wants no part of the K brothers he needs a handpicked tomato can.

  • gar 30 says:

I urge everyone to wait and see who Haye fights next becouse he could end up facing Wladimir or Vitalli. I do think that Haye should take a step up in class now his mandatory defence is out of the way and the only challengers are the Klitchko’s becouse of the dire state of the division.

I learned my lesson by slating Floyd Mayweather for not facing Mosley and on May 1st I get my big slice of humble pie!!

My point is Haye is new to the division and I think we should see his next opponent before we criticise too much.

  • Martin says:

Patpump I look forward to seeing you eat humble pie (assuming Vlad’s contractual demands are reasonable) when the fight takes place and Haye beats Vlad.

There is no doubt that the K brothers are World class heavyweights but they are not in Haye’s league when it comes to entertainment and putting bums on seats.

  • koko says:

the reason people say haye is scared is because he is.

  • trevez17 says:

McKay, you’re a bad Haye hater, you always post articles hatin on him. Get a grip you know nothing about boxing.

  • DC says:

Someone’s mad the Klitschkos havn’t fought each other? Darn……well maybe you will get to see Tarvis & Travis Simms in a boxing match if you really wanna see brothers fight. I bet Don King is workin on it after news of their scuffle.

  • Sup says:

    @RMC

Mate you are bonkers. Haye beat Ruiz and Valuev and you are telling us he`s holding two aces? How`s that? He is a paper champion that has YET TO PROVE HIMSELF in the division after only a few fights. The K brothers have RULED the division since Lennox left taking on all fighters and dispatching each each opponent, they have already cemented their legacy and really have nothing to prove by beating Haye other than to add another notch on their belt. Is Haye a big draw, yes, absolutely but the reality is this mate: The K brothers already made their history, fighting Haye or not they have a legacy, Haye is nothing without the K brothers, he has not beaten anyone of worth in the division and cannot begin to think about legacy without beating the K brothers, Haye will be nothing without these fights. He would be remembered for stopping a 37 year old John Ruiz, wow! and you say haye is holding the cards???

  • bubalicious says:

The fact that the 2 klitschko brothers have been allowed to dominate the heavyweight division for years yet never had to fight each other under a mandatory defense is a complete disgrace and shows just how corrupt boxing has become. i hope haye destroys the both of them and finally ends this farce that has been the klitschko title reign……no wonder so many people are now turning to MMA!!!!!!!

  • max says:

your all out of you mind, t
haye performed the holyfied blueprint against valuev to perfection and won the WBA title the most prestigious belt out there….
styles make fights and david haye changed his style….10 punches a round was 10 more than valuev landed…valuev has a granite shin, huge reach advantage and a decent jab. Haye showed him lateral movement, world class footwork and speed…to win clearly. Even the partisan germans booed the judge who scored it a draw, because they unlike you terrible commentators saw that haye had won.
If you want entertainment then look a haye mormeck, haye – enzo, but styles make fights…
If haye had faced adamek you would say adamek was too young, arreloa, he’s out of shape-just a contender, peters too old, Haye cannot win until he lands a left hook overhand right combination on wlads chin and then you guys can write about how haye always had a punchers chance….

  • kevin says:

They should get it on cause they dont get along!!!

  • RMC says:

William Mackay I’m going to reprint an article I posted on here a long time ago “Haye v Klitschko, setting the record straight” READ IT, AS YOU NEED TO GET YOU FACTS RIGHT! You are just one of many muppets who continuously talk about Haye backing out of a fight with Vital. HOW CAN YOU BACK OUT OF SOMETHING THAT NEVER EXISTED? Now fan boys like yourself and numerous others can say what you want, but you just come across as stupid and this just goes to prove you knowledge of the sport is very poor. Nothing was ever signed sealed or delivered he chose not to sign a Bullsh*t contract end of.

I say it’s a job well done by Haye. All his mouthing got the attention, got him a crack at a portion of the world title, now like him or not he’s the biggest thing in the HW division and now its the Klitschkos calling him out, as it’s them who need him. Basically the decks been cut and Hayes holding two aces, so no more you got to fight my best mates uncles former room mate contracts.

  • rick says:

Haye you are going to get your punishment. You cannot hide and run for cover whenever fighters fight back against you. Haye went out there talking so much damn trash. If Haye was so tough, he would have fought the other top contenders before he fought the K’s. Povetkin, Peter, Arreola, Boytsov, Solis would have also stopped loud mouth Haye. This is why Haye will not fight those fighters. Haye will rather just jump in for a big pay day against the K’s first.

  • Sup says:

Of course he will run, that`s what David Haye does. In fact, if he were smart (which i highly doubt he is) he would quit boxing and start running marathons because he ain`t beating the K brothers any time soon. Those that talk ALOT of trash usually are very insecure and so they use the talking to back up this lack of confidence. David has done ALOT of talking and in the ring unfortunately for him he will have to use his fists to do the talking but I HIGHLY doubt he has the stones to step in the ring with Wlad.

  • Lee says:

Even if Haye did throw 10 punches per round… he probably landed 10 punches… valuev was hittin thin air all night… how would that constitute a win?

I think Wlad will win on points but hope haye sparx him

  • Dan The Man says:

haha this is interesting … early prediction and at the bookies as soon as any fight is made … haye will knock wladimir out in either the 2nd or the 5th round … then vitali will be retired by his corner in the 8th or 9th …. the klitchkos havnt fought anybody quite like david haye, just a bunch of fatties ..

  • Macca says:

This fight will happen. Although it’s not a big a must as pacquiao/mayweather, it still is the only fight in the heavyweight worth watching.

Chambers was a disgrace to boxing. Turning up overweight and unprepared, this crap can’t go on anymore.

I believe Haye will easily overcome Vladimir but could have a struggle against vitali.

But Haye is what this division needs, and should have been around a few years back. Would have loved to see him trash talking Tyson in his psycho days.

  • shabaz says:

You lot are cracked, why would haye run away
he wants to fight the klitschko’z for goodness sake
and if wlad is genuinly calling out haye then the fight will definately happen, haye is not scared of no fighter. He’s ready for the best all the time!!! ALL THE TIME !!!!

  • john says:

Haye is getting scared for no reason. He should face klitschko now.

  • Cor Lawson says:

What a load of sh@t, haye would have no problem with the over weight out of shape peter or Arreola, and would blow Adamek away with in 5 rounds, Povetkin would be hand made for haye and would walk straight on to one of hes now famous and most devestating right hand in the current HW division. I also believe haye has a good chance with the younger k brother as hes jaw is not the strongest in the division. So bring them on HAYE IS THE MAN.

  • Martin says:

The reason why Vlad wants Haye is because he is far and away the best fight out there fight out there for either K brother and he has successfully managed to get under their skin with recent promotional stunts.

Haye is also the WBA champ, holding the only World title of real value that the K brothers don’t currently hold and the K brothers refuse to fight each other.

A fight with Haye is far more lucrative than any other contest available at this time.

Haye beat Valuev in his own back yard making him look slow and ponderous throughout the fight. Why anyone could lay claim to Valuev winning the fight I’d beyond me as he hardly landed a glive kn Haye throughout the whole 12 rounds!
