Pavlik wants rematch with Martinez – News
By William Mackay: Former World Boxing Council/World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) wants a rematch with Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KO’s) to try and avenge his 12 round unanimous decision defeat Pavlik suffered last Saturday night and to try and recapture his lost titles. I think is a bad idea for Pavlik. While I admire Pavlik for wanting to try and regain his titles so quickly, I think he’s stupid for trying to fight Martinez again so soon without making some major changes in his defense and offensive boxing skills.
My thoughts are that Pavlik is going to go ahead and fight Martinez, take another royal beating of the first order and then wind up a gatekeeper in the middleweight division. Pavlik will be joining Jermain Taylor and Edison Miranda as gatekeepers and will no longer be considered the force that he once was. What Pavlik needs to do instead is move up in weight one or perhaps two divisions to either super middleweight or light heavyweight. Christ, Pavlik weighted 178 for last Saturday’s fight, which is three pounds over the light heavyweight limit.
I don’t know what Pavlik ate to get that big, but he needs to put down the fork if he wants to stay at middleweight. That was probably the dumbest thing he could do – coming into the fight at 178 against a quick, agile fighter like Martinez. I couldn’t plan for a worse thing to do to help him lose the fight than to put on 18 pounds of bloat and then waddle out into the ring and try to beat one of the quickest fighters in the light middleweight division.
Pavlik is probably sorry for it now, but I think he’s going to be sorry in the future if he does go ahead and use his rematch clause to get an immediate rematch with Martinez instead of moving up in weight, or at the very least, picking someone that is more suited towards his style of fighting. If you’re a slow plodder with basic boxing skills like Pavlik, the last thing you want to do is face a quick fighter like Martinez. And you especially don’t want to bloat up to 178 and then try to fight him. I think Pavlik could end up sabotaging his career again if he fights Martinez once more.
Pavlik already screwed up by moving up two divisions to face the faster Bernard Hopkins two years ago. Pavlik is still trying to regain his lost fans from that fight. And who knows what the loss did to Pavlik’s self confidence. It was a bad mistake to make that fight. And here Pavlik is making more mistakes by fighting Martinez and considering a rematch. I see another fight with Martinez as a career-killer for Pavlik. He’ll probably take the fight because of his belief that he can recapture his glory days, but he’ll be sorry for it when he takes another loss.

Two Word for you, Winky Wright.
Kelly made it a long way given his abilities. He should be proud of how far he’s come, but needs to be realistic about who he matches against from now on. 168 seems like the place to be, but there are very skilled boxers at that level as well. He may have success against guys like Froch and Abraham, but should avoid quick, mobile fighters like Dirrell and Ward. Bute / Pavlik would be excellent to watch.
This guy should step aside for a while and reinvent himself, needs a new manager ASAP. He looked like a ghost…
BTW, it’s handed as a cheap excuse, but seriously – where did they get this sh*tty “cutman” from ??? He had nothing but gauze and an enswell, but no vaseline, and no adrenaline ? Without adrenaline, you cannot stop the bleeding, and without vaseline, you cannot keep the cut from reopening. That is utter bullsh*t to not have anything of the two at your hands. I mean, vaseline ? Hello ? Ever heard of ?
I love how this writer talks about his “glory days” as thought it were thirty years ago, it was only just over 2 years ago that he beat Jermain Taylor…
But, i do agree that hes making bad choices, but also, i never liked his team. They seem to emotionally invovled, yet amateurs in Boxing, dont forget up until KP had made it big none of them were known names in the sport, the all came from the same small town or nearabouts.
I think hes made them alot of money too and they are collectively making poor decisions, Pavlik should get a new team ASAP, cos the current situation isnt working.
Ive never thought he was an amazing fighter anyway, but i like him and i like to see people succeed, i hope he gets a new team and trains somewhere other that Youngstown with all his friends.
It wasn’t Pavliks “style”, it were his physical shortcomings. He was slower, more ponderous, and less endurant than he was in his short prime. Alcohol is not a terrific drug, but it “gets the job done”, regarding destroying your body and brain.
Pavliks trainer looks like something of the broadway show “cats”
Well it seems Pavlik STILL hasnt accepted why hes losing fights, its not the cuts, its not somebody else in the ring like he claimed against Hopkins.
ITS YOU KELLY. Your slow poor style and lack of ideas that are getting exposed at this high level. Your not good enough and until you actually realise this and start working on improvement instead of making excuses your not guna be beating people like Martinez.
Now we all know Pavlic and his team are not the smartest cookies around!
After Bhop kicked his ass they didn’t change ANYTHING in Pavlics style, saying the loss was a fluke. Was this loss a fluke team Pavlic? If your not willing to even try to change your style,(if you can) then get ready for another butt whooping by Martinez and then be the next Gatti type attraction untill you are done!
He’ll prolly say that wasn’t him in that fight again, hahaha.
Pavlik was never that good to began with; he defeated Taylor, and that’s the highlight of his career. After what Hopkins did to him that should have shown the world how limited Pavlik is. Who wasn’t convinced that Martinez won that fight?
I saw this beat down coming for Pavlik. If Paul Williams and Martinez were to have a rematch I can see Paul Winning again though.
I wouldn’t recommend a rematch this fast. Kelly needs to heal his cuts, atleast an year off before fighting anyone.
Pavlik needs:
a) a new trainer who doesn’t consist entirely on “double up the jab!” but says something remotely serious every now and then
b) a new camp with no “friends” whose minds were smoked away already, getting him into deep sh*t
c) a rehab, for a year
pavlik needs a new trainer first
This article highlights what is wrong with the boxing press all fan want to see is fighters fighting not dodging match ups because its not the right move to further there careers. No wonder alot of younger boxing fans are looking to mma to see the best fight the best, but this problem is now creeping into mma.
Pavlik wins the rematch by KO. What do you people mean he should quit or he’s going to get beat again. This is boxing. He just turned 28. I bet you people also said the same thing about Wladimir Klitchko after the Brewster fight. Quit. Bullsh*t, Go Kelly
No offense to the writer but I dont believe Pavlik can change. Not enough athletic ability.Give him his rematch and let him cash that last check.
Pavlik was starting to come on, right before the cut. So, I think it makes sense to take the rematch. But, I don’t he will win. Fighters with good movement seem to, simply, have his number.
i was shocked when martinez took the fight over in the 9th. he was a beast, and even though i favored kelly going in, i was glad to see sergio get his big moment -he’s earned it after years of just falling short.
pavlik reminds me a lot of tito trinidad from years ago. he can blow out guys standing in front of him, but when an opponent can move and box, throw hard punches from angles, pavlik looks like a washed-up bum.
i thought pavlik looked nearly shot, i hated his body language and petulance in the corner, and, frankly, he’s been a big disappointment since winning the titles, but he deserves a rematch. i hope there’s one. i’d watch.
He should get a new trainer to remind him that throwing hooks and uppercuts is legal in boxing.
I would say that Sergio Martinez made it clear that he is the better fighter. There is no need for a rematch.
@serg i think martinez is either 34 or 35. Hope he stays in top fighthing condition for another 4 fights but realisticly he should fight just 2 more fights and retire, the age factor is catching up…but then again he might last up to 38 you never know, takes someone special like roberto duran to do it right, not like bhop who does it with dirty tactics haha.
There is a new king in the middleweight throne and is Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez
That´s why those rematch clauses are in there, just like with Floyd/Mosley, you never know what is going to happen in a fight and if Pavlik doesn´t get cut up so bad maybe he can win some of those later rounds and squeak out a decision. Yes Martinez won but it was only by a few rounds so I think it´s a warranted rematch and you might see a more aggressive Pavlik with a slightly different game plan. Who knows if the result will be any different but he has the option and it´s good he wants to try and avenge the loss.
How old is Martinez 38?
Serg did good would like to see him figh Margarito n then p Williams see
if he can avenge his losses.. Just wish he was younger cause he’s getting up there
in age .
I watched the fight again today and KP didnt look that bad and had a real good chance to beat Martinez .He Got cut and he looked real bad after the second cut his vision was imparied. Martinez may well beat him again ,but it is no sure thing KP could easily catch him on the way in and KO him. I like both fighters and was happy for Martinez. Kelly needs to Train and Train and Train some more. he must be in the best shape of his life No Booze no Broads …..Defence defence The are of Self Defence Kelly learn it believe. you can be champ again, YOU MUST WANT IT!!!
