No fight between Collazo and Aydin

By Eric Thomas: According to Fight News, the manager for former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Luis Collazo (30-4, 15 KO’s) has pulled Collazo out of his June 5th bout against fellow welterweight contender Selcuk Adyin (19-0, 15 KO’s), because Collazo can no longer make the welterweight limit. Collazo, 29, has been inactive since stopping David Gogichaishvili in the 6th round last year in June. Collazo had been hoping to get a rematch with WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, whom he lost by a close 12 round decision against last year in January 2009.

Berto instead chose to fight Carlos Quintana, stopping him in the 8th round on April 10th. Collazo didn’t look forward to fighting the hard hitting Aydin in his native Turkey, after they lost the purse bid to Aydin’s promoter. At 5’9”, its unclear what Collazo’s chances are competing in the junior middleweight division.

The fighters are a little bigger at that weight and hit harder. Collazo might find himself unable to match the power and the size of some of the bigger fighters in the division. Collazo lost his WBA welterweight crown to Ricky Hatton in a questionable 12 round decision in May 2006. Collazo would later get easily beaten by Shane Mosley in a one-sided 12 round decision loss a year later in February 2007. In between those losses, Collazo has beaten a handful of 2nd tier fighters but hasn’t beaten a top tier fighter since defeating Miguel Angel Gonzalez in 2005.
