Miguel Cotto: Can he win?

By PHILIP H. ANSELMO: The biggest question going into the Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman fight is not whether Cotto can win, it’s how much left is there of the former WBA/WBO welterweight champ? Is his chin permanently dented? Is there any way he can reclaim, or refine his boxing style under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward enough to both, win the fight and/or do it in impressive enough fashion to legitimately be “back” as a viable threat at Jr. middleweight?

Yuri is an awkward fighter coming off of his most impressive victory to date, defeating tough Daniel Santos over 12-semi-scrappy rounds to become the WBA Jr. middleweight title-holder. In that fight, the normally defensive-minded Foreman let his hands go with surprising effectiveness. Coming off of a win like that, the champion should be very confident of his chances against Cotto, a fighter who’s better days seem to be behind him.

Enter Emanuel Steward, trainer of champions. To take on the training duties of Cotto is a risky move by the veteran strategist, and so far, he sees the fight two ways.

“First of all, I don’t like this particular fight style-wise (for Cotto). This kid Yuri is all wrong for him. He’s (Foreman) a very defensive fighter by nature, so he’s hard to get to. He hasn’t been in any grueling fights, so he hasn’t taken much punishment, as opposed to Miguel, where he’s taken not only beatings, but prolonged beatings. He’s (Foreman) the fresher fighter. I’ve got my work cut out for me, and so does Miguel.”

Thinking about this fight in depth, it seems to me that Yuri’s lack of power and defensive tendencies could work against him. If Cotto sticks to the game plan, which would be to outbox his opponent, instead of looking for the one-punch KO, he could possibly win easily.

Think about it; fast combinations consisting of 3, to 4-puch volleys and quick in-and-out movement via slick footwork could work, providing Cotto is in condition to do so. If Miguel keeps the fight in ring centre and beats Foreman to the punch early, the champ could very possibly go into a purely defensive mode. Activity during the rounds should be one of the main objectives from that point on. For Miguel, putting rounds in the bank is imperative. Yuri is a fighter whose style can lull an opponent to sleep, thus taking control of a fight. It’s up to Miguel to keep the fight at an up-tempo pace.

In other words, the fighter who’s doing the most work should sway the judges. And Cotto has the style to execute this very game plan to a “T”, once again depending on what he has left. Steward sounds surprisingly encouraged with what he’s seen of Cotto recently…

“Miguel has surprised me to say the very least. Not many people know this, but he’s actually been training himself these past few years. I told him, ‘you fight like you’re 4-11”, bending over all the time, open for an uppercut’. He’s been listening to everything I’ve told him and he’s a tremendous worker. I’m delightfully surprised.” Steward agreed that work rate would be the key to winning the fight.

“That’s exactly what we’ve been working on. I want Miguel to take the fight to him. If the KO comes, so be it, but I’d rather see him earn it (a KO) only if it presents itself. We want to be ready to fight 12 hard rounds.”

But Foreman won’t be an easy night’s work, despite his apparent lack of punching power. His counter-punching is sneaky, and if he lets his hands go like he did in last fight, and lands, how much punch resistance does Cotto have left? Similar to what James “Buster” Douglas did against Mike Tyson in Tokyo, if Yuri were to steadily touch Cotto, little-by-little-, round-after-round, would the accumulative punches equate to “chopping the tree down” in Cotto’s case? It’s not hard to envision such a scenario if in actuality the fight were to take that route.

And once again, think about it: Cotto has taken prolonged beatings in both losses, but the Antonio Margarito fight sticks out in particular. Who’s to say Miguel wasn’t battered, a la Billy Collins with the infamous loaded gloves of Margarito? If that was the case, Cotto’s elongated thrashing could’ve been even worse for him than anyone has even fathomed. Fighting, and losing badly to the PFP fighter on earth, Manny Pacquiao couldn’t have helped either. So the question remains: How much does Cotto have left, and what level of punch resistance does he have at this point in his career?

At this juncture, nothing’s a safe bet either way, but Cotto could very-well fight the perfect fight against the light-hitting Foreman and redeem himself, as well as pick up another world title in a different weight class in the process. Cotto should be aggressive, but also remember the first law of boxing: Hit and not be hit. After all, as far as TRUE, natural boxing talent is concerned, Cotto, at his best, has the overall edge, but will we see Miguel’s best?

I’ll know more in the coming weeks how things are going at The Kronk, and the more I find out, perhaps, the more we’ll know.

One thing’s for sure though—this fight is far from easy to call right this moment, especially until we hear more about how Miguel is coming along. We know what Yuri’s going to bring to the table… but in truth, despite what Emanuel sees so far in camp, we won’t really know what to expect from Cotto until about the 4th or 5th round on fight night.

Does the best Miguel Cotto beat the best Yuri Foreman? Absolutely. Does a shell of Miguel beat a confident world champ in Foreman? No, probably not.

But the fact that Emanuel Steward is taking on the task of fine-tuning and sharpening the dormant skills Cotto may’ve lost along the way says quite a bit about his re-dedication to improving.

Remember, Steward has taken on cases similar to this when he trained Evander Holyfield for his rematch with the much bigger, superbly skilled (at the time) Riddick Bowe, who’d just beaten Holyfield comprehensively for the heavyweight championship. Say what you will about Bowe’s shape coming into their 2nd fight, but with Steward in his corner, Holyfield could not be denied that night.

Lets face it, this fight could make-or-break either fighter, but in Cotto’s case, a loss would be a huge batch of nails driven directly into the proverbial coffin of his career. Look for Miguel to be in the best shape of his life and fight the smartest fight possible to earn a victory. Anything less could prove disastrous.

  • mlu says:

cotto is a great and one of the best fighters in the world. I believe he is going to win the fight by a KO. after this fight he must take a rematch with pacman and he will knock him out too as long as emmanuel is his trainer.

  • Assdemonio says:

Cotto needs to recover his love for the sport. Having Steward in his corner will help a lot. I liked his warrior attitude during the Pac fight. He gave MPac a run for his money in the first few rounds.

  • for all big mouth says:

Cotto will be back, I see cotto winning by KO’s over foreman and he will going back donw to fight Berto and have a easy win over berto too…

  • Jamnor says:

It depends on where he is pshycologically. I would like to think that manual stewart will make a difference but cotto has suffered two brutal loses in recent years. The positive in both of his losses is he was winning the first part of both of those fights, and was boxing well. For his sake I hope he can rebound just like he did after losing to Margarito, then beating mosley and clottey, because cotto is one of the most likeable fighters in boxing.

  • Eli says:

MIGUEL COTTO IS THE FU#$%^ MAN!!! HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE FIGHTER EVER!!

  • Eli says:

Of COURSE HE CAN WIN!!! YOU KNOW IT, I KNOW IT, AND YURI FOREMAN KNOWS IT. LOL

  • Quarteysjab says:

Cotto is far from finished, he finally has a real trainer assisting his cause, the other two guys were freeloaders. Yuri is tough. But Santos may have solkd his belt. Why didn’t Santos have a rematch clause? Good fight.

  • A.L. says:

PaLante Boricua!!! Aguas Buenas esta con
    tigo caballero!!!!

  • Jerry Rodriguez says:

I am a big fan of Miguel Cotto and I know come June 5 he will win the fight. With Emmanuel Steward as head trainer I think Cotto will be better and I believe by the end of the year we might see Cotto vs. Pacquio 2. Especially with all this nonsense with Mayweather and his antics I think Pacquio would go for a rematch and they both will make a lot of money! It comes down to money and I think a rematch would make a lot of money for both fighters and Bob Arum and Top Rank.

  • FRANKNITTY360 says:

    cotto will win this fight

  • FRANKNITTY360 says:

    cotto will win this fight!

  • Jalexander305 says:

Cotto will win he knows he has a lot to prove now but still after taking out Forman I strongly feel he should go back down to welterweight he’s just too small for jr middle matter fact I wouldn’t be suppriaed if he was the smallest man in that division imma have to look that up. But then again he can still beat all the high ranking has beens like Cory spinks who boxers well

  • KO KING says:

COTTO is an amazing fighter, i rate him, he has the heart of a warrior, he’s been through some wars! i jus hope he takes on foreman! i wanna c da old cotto bak but lets c wat happens

  • Stamina9008 says:

My favourite fighter of the last ten years, simply awesome.
I remember watching him destroy Judah, Malignaggi, Torres, Quintana etc and then i thought “Oh No”..Shane Mosley! lol
And when he beat Shane (close fight, but he clearly won fairly) i thought he would go on kicking ass for like 5-7 more years.
Plus, the Margacheato scandal endeared people towards Miguel whilst the courage he’s shown against everybody hes fought laid the foundation.
He has only lost twice, as someone has said below me, but they were hard defeats over many rounds, and hes had alot of wars, like the more recent one with Clottey.
I think he can win, but he needs to win early, if the fight goes beyond 5 rounds i see Miguel getting flashbacks and losing.
But if he can win early, which he can, he is naturally better than Foreman (more gifted fighter) and fought better opposition, then, it might raise his confidence and we might get him back..
Maybe im dreaming, but id love to see him return with an impact, he deserves it!!!

  • ferret says:

yes yes yes and yes he can , i think he is great, my fave fighter!

  • Shadow says:

Cotto is far from being finished. He has only lost twice!

He lost to the pound for pound king and a cheater with loaded handwraps. That does not push a person into retirement. Obviously you don’t know much about boxing. Floyd Patterson also got his second loss having a record of 35 wins, exactly like Cotto has now. He went on to fight 26 more fights and is considered to be one of the best fighters of all time. I’m not really compairing the 2 fighters though. My point is that even if you’ve lost to fights, it doesn’t mean you’re finished. In fact far from it. Most fighter become great after the experience of losing. Cotto just needs a little more time because Antonio Margarito cheated against him. He could have killed Cotto for crying out loud!

  • Cam says:

    Cotto needs to improve his defense if he wants his career to last longer; the reason why we are sitting here talking about a boxer that is only 29 years old possibly retiring is because he takes too much punishment. We can all speculate on whether or not Margaritto had something in his gloves the night he fought Cotto, but realistically for Cotto to get hit that much by a guy with Margarito’s slow hand speed says alot;
I like Cotto, he’s a great offensive fighter but I believe he’s been slightly overrated.

  • THE FALCON 333 says:

With his new trainer, and the performance we will see now, will answer all questions, based on that, Miguel himself will do what needs to be done…This will be the last time his fans will somewhat support cotto if he shall fail.

  • lynch says:

I think cotto will do it,think we will see a stronger cotto not a weight drained version imo !

  • puchman says:

cotto will win and to all that hate eat a D#*k!!!

  • slayer says:

phil great artical big fan of cotto and your band down, cotto would have given pacquaio a much harder fight had he number one not fired his uncle head traner and also had he not taken such a bad beating from that cheater margarito he was winning the fight by a mile till he was stoped my plaster hardened gloves such a shame for a much loved warrior but hopefully steward can bring him back

  • Jack says:

Love Cotto so hope he does himself proud. No-one would begrudge him walking away after the beatings he’s taken but then again no-one wants to see a great boxer retire.

Can’t wait for this fight and think we’ll see a rejuvenated and hungry Cotto come fight night.

  • ashishwarrior says:

absolutley cotto will ko him imo

  • J says:

Cotto is still an extremely dangerous fighter, I think he beats Foreman easily. However, I don’t think he should campaign at jr middleweight, he needs to stick around at welterweight. A fight between him and Andre Berto would be very interesting.

  • Ryan Dunn says:

A permanently dented chin? He made it through many tough fights without going down. He lost to a cheater in Margarito and one of the all-time greats in Pacquiao. Losing to Margarito took his confidence away, and he has yet to reclaim it. His father being replaced as trainer by a younger “friend,” was the wrong way and it showed.

Cotto is a very skilled boxer who doesn’t need to retire. The dude just turned 29.

If he can’t find his heart, yes he should walk away. But he doesn’t have permanent physical or mental damage from his matches so far, not in my opinion.

    …ryan

  • tommy says:

Though skilled,Foreman has no pop.If he rocks Cotto, that’s trouble.

  • beto says:

everyone respects Cotto! Cotto by 7 K.O yuri is not going to know what hit him!

  • Free one says:

I like cotto.. So I give him 1 more chance,, n if he loose again.. He should retire… But I doubt it.. He can still do it.. GaurAntee thAt… Cotto. 8 round k.o

  • soprano says:

Cotto can do it no doubt…he just gotta stop gettin hit so much n I think dat he can give Pacman a lot harder fight @middeweight

  • Jalexander305 says:

    Cotto by KO

  • larame says:

Cotto was a great champion but he took two very bad beatings I like the man and His heart and ego should not block reason and reality, I wish him well

  • God says:

    Fffffuuuu Larame.

Don’t hate cotto for losing to PAC and Mcheato.

Cotto found what he needed(good trainer) to spice up his style, watch yuri get ko’d in 3rounds.

  • chicken city says:

Cotto was once a great fighter and a man with great heart he still has Heart to much for his own good, he should go home to wife and family retire plant flowers sit in the sun Remember the Glory days while he memory still works
