Mayweather vs. Mosley on Saturday
By Gary Todd: When Shane Mosley stepped through the ropes to ruin Floyd Mayweather’s post fight celebrations, on the night of his comeback fight against Juan Manual Marquez, did he think he would say enough to entice Mayweather into a showdown, sometime down the track? I would say no. No doubt, Mayweather was pissed, but he would get over it. Anyways, he had come back to fight Pacquaio, not Mosley. It was all about the Filipino, the fight, his own legacy, and the millions he could make along the way.
With the Pacquaio fight on hold, who else could he fight ? Margarito, Cotto, ?
Mosley was like a mosquito, who bit in to him, which gave him, an itch he had to scratch.
At 39 years old, Mosley has done it all, with massive fights against Oscar De La Hoya, in 2000, and 2003, he has won multiple world championships in 3 weight divisions. He was a boxing superstar. Shane Mosley [ Won 46. Lost 5. with 39 wins by way of ko. ] He has had a great career.
When Mosley stepped through the ropes to sting Mayweather, he looked like a desperate man. A man with no place to go. He couldn’t fight Margarito, or Cotto.
Since 2000, after the De La Hoya fight, at welterweight, Mosley has lost in big fights to Vernon Forest, and Winky Wright, and Miguel Cotto, and he has beaten De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Luiz Collazo, Ricardo Mayorga, and Antonio Margarito in his last outing in January, 2009.
When I watched him in New York against Cotto, I thought I saw him grow old in the ring that night, and I hoped he would retire.
Cotto beat him up to the body and won the fight with his jab.
As Mosley was recuperating from the Cotto fight, Mayweather had taken Ricky Hatton to school, with an unbelievable display of power and punching perfection, knocking him from pillar to post in the 10th round.
After 39 fights, and dominating in every weight division since 1996, he announced his retirement to the stunned media, straight after the Hatton press conference. As he left the room, I asked him if he would be back. He didn’t say a word, just smiled, and winked at me.
Mayweather didn’t need to come back. “Money’s” got plenty.
With this fight just one week away, the works been done, the media and the fans have had a tremendous build up, even likening the fight to the legendary fights of Hagler v Hearns, and Leonard v Duran. Me, I wouldn’t go that far. If this fight was fought in 2006, then maybe.?
THE FIGHT.
Mosley is a slow starter, which could be a big mistake for him against Mayweather. If he does that, Mayweather is a master of slowing down the fight to his tempo, then raising it, while countering as he needs to. The double jab will be a big factor in this fight, as I see Mayweather fighting long, with the full jab coming in, followed with the left hook. Mosley drops his right hand, way too much, leaving himself open to the hook. I feel Mayweather will also go to Mosley’s body and just box and move all night.
For Mosley to win, he has to start fast, pressurize Mayweather, and throw his half jab, then straight right hand, wide left hook, then try and land the power punching over hand right. If he can do this, he could win this fight.
A lot of people are talking about the two fighters speed, and power, and how they will each react to it.
MY PREDICTION.
For me, this fight will be decided on not just speed, and power, but timing, and while I agree, both fighters have speed and power, only one of them still has timing and that’s Floyd Mayweather Jnr. This fight is about money , bragging rights, but for me, its about the timing is right. Mayweather on points.

i cant believe people, just like what this guy joe says, the less enertaining the boxer= the better the boxer. what the hell is that supposed to meen i just dont get it, i dont know about you but with this economy im not flying out all the way from boston paying for hotel fees food and drink to see a fighter try to bee as less entertainig as possible because supposedly the less entertaining he is makes him better. i wish some one would explaine to me what this guy joe meant up there for me cause it just dont make any sense to me. did he bump his head or something, i dont know maybe i guess im the only one that likes to get his moneys worth and wants to see and entertaining fight or maybe like this guy sys i just dont know or im a novice boxing fan and didnt know that a boxer has to be the less entertaining and be the better boxer
I’ll have to go with Mayweather for this fight because he is simply the best there is today. However Mosley looks confident, probably too confident it looks like hes got some tricks up his sleave. But come may 1st Mayweather is taking Sugar Shane to school.
Floyd doesn’t take many flush punches… he is very good at fighting backwards. it would be interesting if he can fight going forward. he doesn’t jab much and usually leads with a left hook, wait a couple of seconds and then throw a straight right. he will start off slow to try and get a feel for shane’s speed and timing. once he gets that… i’d say round 6 or so, he may start to pop shot him. my heart wants shane but floyd is a very good technical boxer. he uses his movement to create opportunities. for shane to win, he has to mix it up. too many people think that pressuring him is a good idea, i don’t get that feeling. think hopkins v. trinidad. mix it up (forward, backward, and provide angles), this way it will take floyd awhile to get the timing.
MANNY PACQUIAO is the fighter of the decade, and number1 pound for pound king, hes the guy mayweather has to fight next if he really cares about his legacy.mayweather has already proclaimed himself the greatest fighter of all time, based on his undefeated recoed.theirs flaws on his ideology.hes naming himself as greatest ever, but has yet to prove hes greatest of his era.and that doesnt add up.but floyds undefeated his fans will say.big,so what?geoge foreman was 40-0 when ali beat him.not bad right?larry holmes was 48- when he lost to michael spinks.even better.rocky marciano retired 49-0 with 43 knockouts.julio cesar chavez won his first 88 fights yes 88 before he finally suffered a draw to pernell whitaker.packy macfarland lost his first he didnt like that so he decided he was going to win his next 98 fights.the officaly awarded greatest of all time sugar ray robinson was 128-1 in the prime of his career.he finihed his career 173-19 with 198 knockouts.willie pep won his first 62 fights lost one and went on to win his next 72 bouts. that put him at 134-1 at that point.which record do oyu prefer 40-0 or 134-1? here is the point, not only did these guys have outstanding records, but they built their tremendous stacks of stats without cherry picking their opponents.all those guys fought pugilist that were willing to step in to the ring with them and they never made ouragous demands everytime. Who was that other guy? Oh yeah, floyd mayweather, the greatest boxer ever.if floyd beats mosely hell be 41-0. WHOOPY,WOWWWWWW….
sugar shane, by way of knockout! round 4.You heard it here first!
and for all this warrior talk, getting your face beat in killing you carear and putting yourself in the position of a ali and roach are in right now is not tuff, its stupid. the objective of the sport is to hit and not be hit. if you like brawls go to your local bar fights. thats not boxing. when you ask any trainer out there including roach mannys trainer himself who is the purest boxer out there. every single one of them sais floyd. being skillfull and being smart is what the game is about thats why floyd, and hopkins are still in the game strong.
mosley was unstoppable and floyd was scared of him especially after what he did to tough unbeatable margarito. soon as floyd signs to fight mosley. mosley is old. margarito was distracted, he just stands there. floys is always scared of someone then when he sets up a fight with them , all of a sudden people have a million excuses to why he won the fight.
mosley is the top welterweight in the world and #3 pound for pound in the world. so please no excuses after this fight. floyd could beat one of the klychkos and there would still be excuses for why he won.
I am concerned that Floyd is the smaller fighter, with a shorter reach. Still I believe that PBF will win the fight, and will actually be forced to fight because Shane will try to pressure him more. It will end up being a repeat performance of the De La Hoya fight, where the crowd will be supporting Shane and there reaction to anything by Shane will be the only thing going for Shane. Floyd will beat him to the body and the jab. As for PBF being a fraud, you can’t get mad at him for other fighters not being able to touch him. The objective is to fight and not get hit. Pacman and all the others mentioned have no defense and that is why they seemingly have brawls in there fights. NO DEFENSE means a bunch of punches landed. Don’t hate Floyd because he has skill.
I agree, this fight would have been great, if it was fought a decade ago. Sugar Shane hit his peak many years ago and unfortunately he is now at the mature stage of his boxing career. At his age, regardless of a couple of notable wins his boxing now will always be at a decline. As much as I would like Sugar Shane to win, Mayweather has this on points. P.S I hope the past does not repeat itself. Pacman v Mayweather has to happen soon.
i think people are hyping fraud mayweather way too much.he is not all that great and he sure isnt greater than ALI OR ROBINSON. the guy is over rated specially from his camp and from his huge mouth. his fights are BORING, and he usually spends 12 rounds running and throwing ocassional pot shots to win by points.fraud mayweather comes to his fights with one intention and that is to go to the score cards.hes not worth watching and he sure isnt worth paying for pay per view.when was the last time you go back and say WOW THAT WAS AN AMAZING FRAUD MAYWEATHER FIGHT, something like a pacman vs. marquez, pacman vs. morales, morales vs. barrera, arturo gatti vs. micky ward. youll never get that from a mayweather fight, the only thing you can expect from mayweather is a marathon race. he should start calling himself a more suitable name like marathon mayweather. oh and before i forget he trully is a fraud because he has been beat before by jose luis castillo.
Yea but margrito was a distracted slugger. No real skill involved with his style
i think you are forgetting that he fought margrito in his last fight when he was 37 and it was his best preformance to date.
